Ok, so I think Sony finally broke me down into asking for a PS2 for Christmas, but I'm only going to ask for one game, I would prefer it be an RPG, but I need reccomendations.

would it not be smarter to save the cash for a while until PS3 comes out, since I'm betting it has backwards compatability

PS3 will be far too expensive for me to bother with for a few years, so I see it as a good idea to get a ps2 now, then maybe a ps3 in 4 years after they drop the price to somethign reasonable.
I think you should get Shadow of the Colossus even though it isn't an RPG, then buy ff12 on release day.

I am poor and impatient, also to me within the next year it looks like PS2 will have all the good games until Revolution and PS3 (More or less). And I need some RPG's.

I don't think it will be THAT expensive, only as expensive as other new consoles.

By the time it actually is released there will be other DVD players and such with this "CRAZY TEchs!" allowing the price to drop to probably about 300-400$ CDN
(I hope)

Edit: As for RPGs, definately try Shadow of the Collosus, I heard good things about Ico too.

If you are looking for an RPG then go with Dragon Quest 8. I am getting a PS2 for Christmas as well.

I currently am looking at these games to get(Haven't decided which ones yet)
Devil May Cry 3
Dragon Quest 8
God Of War
Resident Of Evil 4
Guitar Hero(Looks sick)
Shadow of Collossus
Socom 3

Try RE4, it was brilliant on the GC. Shadow of the Collosus sounds like a REALLY good game.

Final Fantasy VII (not ps2, but it sounds like you didn't have PS at all, and this is a must play RPG), or FFX if you had PS before.

As for the threadstarter, if you're looking for a new RPG, then go for Dragon Quest VIII. However, you could save yourself some money and get some older titles like FFX, Suikoden III, Baldur's Gate: DA, Kingdon Hearts, and so on.

Star Ocean!

Love that game :). Ps1 though, not the ps2 version. Though it's not bad and a fairly good game, has nothing on the ps1 version.

Early 2006 in Japan, late 2006 in North America, but this is the first I hear of it being pushed back even further?!?!?!?

To threadstarter: Do what I'm doing and buy Dragon Quest VIII:thumb:

That, is rubbish. No way would Sony give their rivals that much of a headstart on building a next-next generation console.

Because there rival is microsoft, and microsoft seem to be digging there own grave with how crap the 360 is. They don't even need to bother trying to compete with Nintendo.

Guitar Hero.

I can't think of a single great RPG I've played for the PS2.

You've come late to the PS2 game. I'd argue it's smarter to wait for PS3.

FF 10 was pretty good minus the voice acting.

And the fact that it was too linear and boring and way way way too easy.

Meh, I liked it. But it's definetly not one of the best FF's.

SubtleDagger

I don't think FF's have been very good since 7.

Granted, 10 was better than the others. But still not up to pre-8 standards.

I honestly am not even looking forward to 12.

I think 8 and 9 were the last good FF's. 8 had a good anti-hero and 9 was pretty oldschool in feeling.

But yeah, I'm definetly not looking forward to 12 either. Yet another spiky haired....blonde.....feminine hero.....blah.

SubtleDagger

Oh man, don't get me started on 8 and 9.

I honestly could write an essay on how tremendously bad 8 is.

Well, I will admit that Squall chould be a bit of a wuss most of the time, but other than that...

The junctioning system was awesome IMO.

Hoo boy.

Basically every possible aspect aside from the graphics and Liberi Fatali.

Storyline was dreadful. Music was for the most part forgettable or just bad. Combat and junction system were god-awful, time-consuming, easily twinkable and annoying, and the characters were one-dimensional.

I could probably think of more problems if I had a lot of time.

I personally loved the junctioning system. I like the cutomization.

But meh, to each their own.

What is your opinion on 9?

I honestly cannot even beat 9. I've played all the way through it twice, got nearly finished with the last dungeon and just did not have any interest in finishing it. Mainly because the storyline and characters, aside from Vivi, were even worse than those in 8.

The battle system and music were better, so it's a trade-off.

Yeah, Vivi was the man.

But I do not see a bright future for the FF series...*tear*

The music in VIII was probably the best in the series, in my opinion. It took Final Fantasy music to a new level, after the average VII and 8-track I - VI.

I can think of many tracks that I consider highlights on that album:
Liberi Fatali
The Castle (especially piano version)
Fisherman's Horizon (especially orchestrated version)
The Man With The Machine Gun (especially orchestrated version)
Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec
Eyes on Me
The Legendary Beast
Balamb Garden (especially orchestrated version)
The Mission

I did a review (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/album.php?albumid=1488) on the the orchestral soundtrack for VIII. Although it is a track by track review, which is :-/.

I disagree with your other points too, but it's been so long since I've played VIII that I cannot really argue them properly.

SubtleDagger

The orchestrated versions are probably exponentially better.

All I know is the game version of Balamb Garden makes me want to drive a railroad spike through one ear and out the other.
