Don't play a solo, only pros and seasoned musicians play them well

You end up looking like a tit if you play a drum solo with no particular reason

if you have to ask in a forum, your not ready, keep practicing

Style is stealing my advice but yeah, its a solo the honestly most people can't play solos because they have no direction. Even Lang and Rabb and people in their catagory can't really solo they just show off chops. A solo needs to make sense just like on any other instrument, good solos are Bonham's Moby Dick live and recorded and Peart's YYZ solo live. Alot of people will tell you look at Creams Toad(Ginger Baker on drums) But I don't really like it

yea...ty...but whoever said im not ready...if you meant playing with a band....your wrong...but i agree i cannot solo like many cannot...that does not represent a lack of feel, just a lack of direction..which i am studying everyday..ty for the advice though...just show them what i can do. aight

if your in a band, and your a sucesful drummer for that band, with good feel, you should have no problem putting together a solo for one of there songs. if its just a solo without any song, it should still not be that hard. its just experimenting with rudiments and grooves you wouldnt put in a song for lack of musical use to go with that particular song. my solos are basically everything i dont feel will fit into my bands songs, its all preference on how you put it together.

neil pearts anatomy of a drum solo will most likely have abit of what i just said..not much..but abit

Anyone who says travis barker's 2005 solo is something special is shiitting out their mouth. I can play that whole thing a year ago...

or old ones for that matter

All I'm saying is he doesn't impress me. Maybe it's because he gets so much praise. I mean he would drum circles around me with a snare but when it comes to the whole set his solos are made up of simple roles and a bit better than basic drum beats...

You said you can play it

Sure its not impressive stuff, but it would still take a while to build up your chops to be able do it

You lied

Ok, I didn't say I was a pro. And I never said Travis Barker wasn't good. I think He is a great drummer, I simply meant I think he gets way too much praise. You know what's irritating, when people love drummers like travis barker and they seem to not know of any other drummers. Thats all dude.

Sorry If I offended you...

I know I pretty much took "someone" elses oppinion and crapped on it. Oh well, just my oppinion.

Yeah, you totaly showed us... Great post dude, awsome immortal state of mind you have where we suck and our chops suck and you are great...*makes jerking off motion*

Anyway, to the thread starter. things got out of hand and it was my fault...
You don't need a solo to make a band, don't sweat it. A thing to do would be to ask them to play you a song and while they are playing it make **** up in your head. Like "hmm, I'd do that here, and that part is perfect for a roll ect. ect..."

A better thing is if they did a cover with you.

What are you talking about? I was taught its a drum ROLL and you know what everyones talking about so stop trying to tell everyone you know everything when its not even what you said. God people pi$s me off on MX.

Travis is a great drummer, he can play all sorts of style which is why I praise him. You know hes been playing since he was 4 years old and hes only young so he wont be as good as older drummers yet. But you never know what hll turn out to be like in 10-20 years. Ive forgot what the orignal question was:lol:

Easy there buddy. If what I posted causes you to be angry and pi$sed then you should really get some help. I was just making sure they knew that a drum roll is not the same as a role. Yea its probably a typo but just making sure.

And in regards to trying out for the band and the solo, did you plan on doing the solo at the audition and thats why you needed help with it?

P.S.- Everybody, I do know everything.

"Travis is a great drummer, he can play all sorts of style which is why I praise him. You know hes been playing since he was 4 years old and hes only young so he wont be as good as older drummers yet."

Louie Bellson was big time at 17. He won the Gene Krupa contest at 17, and Ted Fiorido gave him a job - he justhad to finish school first.
Travis at 17? Hell, Travis now? No comparison.

Neil Peart at Travis's age? John Bonham, Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Steve Smith....

Sorry, Travis is nothing. Playing all sorts of styles? Yeah right. It's okay to like someone's playing, but that doesnt mean they are good. Does he have chops? They are not awful, but they are nothing special either. There are too many people on this forum that would blow him away for anyone to say that he has strong chops.

I dont get it when people always flame people that like Barker. In the, just under, a year and a half ive been here, people flame guys that think Travis is good, I dont think hes a particularly good drummer but hes way better than some like Meg White. Just cut 'em some slack, if they like that kinda pop punk genre theyre gonna like travis and tre cool. I dont see the point.

"It's okay to like someone's playing,"

You can look at my post again, if you like, that line is rather valid.

If you say Travis is good, you're going to hear how you are wrong. Period. If you say "I like Travis" and leave it alone, I'm not going to bother you. In fact, I'd probably stand up for you if you get flamed for it.

"I like Travis" is very different than "Travis is a great drummer!!!!11!!1!"

^^^ Exactly, I said whoever likes barker's solo(which is, by the way what we are talking about, making solos) is shiitting out their mouth. I never said he was bad. I said I can play his solo a year ago, and yes the grammer mistake is intentional....spelling nazi.
He is good, or ok. Ok, he has his moments, I just wanted to point out to the thread starter that he shouldn't model himself after Barker. And since most drummers of our generation(unless there are any older guys/girls on here) lean toward Barker, I thought I should point out, not too early, that he is not GREAT before another potential rock star gets the idea in his head that BARKER-IS-GOD.

thank you for your time...

No he doesn't. He doesn't have moments. He has 13 year old girls screaming. That's all.

"i just watched that video posted, i lost ALOT of respect for him."

Yeah. It happens.

He doesn't play to songs poorly - the music he plays is simple and he does that just fine. But when he tries to push it, he trips all over himself and looks like a fool.

He should stick to his guns. Ringo does and I have alot of respect for Ringo.

ty..for the try, but (besides the offtopic travis barker stuff) you twisted what i asked way around.i dont mean to sound rude...but read what i am asking...not a solo in a song..or even with a band yet..but just a solo which i think i could put together, not a master solo like what you all relate a solo...what i meant was just something to show them that i am capable of playing with them (which i am) i dont know why i posted this cuz i already got accepted..BUT *READ* CORRECTLY

Travis is not THAT bad. hes not a highly talented jazz drummer and hes not the most versatile drummer out there but hes still way better than anyone in here. i dont praise him and i think he is overrated but it very stupid how much people hate him in here.

True but not entirely true, if you have something outlining your solo you can play a non boring solo. I play a solo in the school jazz band and I crash with the band on beats 1 then in the next measure the + of 2 and beat 4 and 1 again and the phrases aren't too long and I create phrases within those phrases so it works out well. If your going to solo have something thats its build around have a theme and don't make it too long because you don't have enough in reserve to make it easy.

travis is a good drummer, he has good chops and good time.

as for OP, soloing is like a wave:

a) start out slow and build it up gradually to a peak

b) when you hit that peak, stop everything and bring the dynamic level (volume and speed and wtv) waaaay down

c) build back to the peak and blast off into space *thumbs up*

... To answer the A1drummers question which most have you have neglected to do ... Solo's do not show how well you can play, they just tell the people you're playing in front of that you can hit **** with a stick. Not saying that solo's are horrible for music. ( the bass solo in Metallica- Orion by their basist * oh ****e, forgot his name * is excellent, John Bonham's Moby Dick is one solo that still amazes me. etc... ) But I would rather have a drummer who could groove ( Joseph Modelestie comes to mind ) than one who pulls off monster fills the whole song.. But if you DO need help with a solo.. check out some foot astinatos... and just dont try to hard or else you'll drop your sticks and look like a fool eh ? Cheers

One of the biggest nusances to me... Dont play every note as an accent... Have some flow and groove.... Do that and you get some respect from me...]

Theres nothing worse than a drum solo that is so bland and uncreative. Just remember, solos arent all about speed, if you get a good sounding tom pattern, it can sometimes sound better slowed down.
