I'm hoping some of you guys might be able to help me out. I've recently returned home from uni to find that my family computer is no longer capable of shutting down. Ie: Start>Shut Down does absolutely nothing. My OS is Windows ME. Anyone know how I can fix this? Currently the only way to turn the thing off is to hold the power button for 3 seconds or so.

Right click on desktop> Properties> Screensaver> Power> Advanced.

Make sure its checked to shutdown the computer when the power button is pressed.

Otherwise something might be crashing when your shutting down.

If thats the Case

Msantispy (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en)

Mcafee Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/)

That should do the trick.

It says "Power Off", and there is no other options. I'm pretty sure that's crashing things, as it has to run Scandisk or something each time I turn it back on.

What I really want is for my Shut Down button to start working again though.

Thanks anyway. :)

Hmm, you could try the 2 links in my above post, and just check your hard drive for spyware etc, usually thats the case with problems shutting down.
