I've been thinking about getting a kit. I live in an apartment and would have to have electronic drums. I'm looking for a good brand or a good kit. $1000 or less. It will be my first time playing or trying to play seriously. I want something that has a good feel and is as realistic as possible, for the money. Any ideas or help or links? Thanks a lot.

I think the thing that would suit you best, would be an electronic kit that you build yourself.

good feel is not really possible on an electric, and $1000 dollars is probably gonna get you an ultra low end kit.
buy an acoustic, and some mesh heads

Build your own e-kit like British Boy suggested.

Ok so whats a good brand(s) to look into? I would get an acoustic set but I want something I can record with as well, to demo song ideas I come up with. Not really wanting to program the DR. Rhythm drum machine...ick.

i have a yamaha dtxpress III. it cost about $1000 and is pretty decent for the money. because of my living situation, i wouldn't be able to do any drum kit practicing if i didn't have it. if you want to hear what it sounds like, listen to the recordings i've made on this web site: http://www.soundclick.com/daveo

I was impressed by the DTxpress III! I played one at GC, I would go with those if I were you. Some very cool features IMO  Especially for the price.
Remo Practice Pad Kit + Piezo Transducers + Alesis DM5 =

I wouldn't even use the Remo. My favourite design is the PVC piping one.

I've seen an ekit for sale brand new at $850 australian. that comes with everything you need to play. it looks good too but i don't know about ekits. do you do think it would have problems keeping up with faster rolls etc.? I have a nice green fade 7 piece export select but i need something to practice with late at night.
