DRAGON QUEST VIII - JOURNEY OF THE CURSED KING

CONSOLE: PS2
GENRE: RPG (ROLE-PLAYING GAME)
NORTH AMERICAN RELEASE DATE: 11/15/05

This is the game that just recently attached me to RPG’s. I decided to have a look into it, because I liked the reviews, and the FRONT COVER! Getting the game for Christmas, it only took me about 3 weeks to beat the game. 3 weeks, 60 hours, yes. Anyways, this game is incredible. One of my favorites for any console! Anyone who likes RPG’s or anyone who wants to get into RPG’s, BUY THIS GAME!! Here’s an in-depth review:

Story: The basic story for DQVIII is about a cursed king and his cursed kingdom, cursed by an evil jester by the name of Dhoulmagus. The king (cursed as a funny looking little green monster) and his daughter (who is also cursed, as a horse), seek out to end the curse, which can only be destroyed if Dhoulmagus is destroyed (any maybe someone else too…). You (a “hero” who was the only one who survived the wrath of the curse placed on the kingdom) set out along with the king and his daughter (since she’s a horse, it’s perfect for her to carry your goods), and a friend named Yangus, who’s a bandit. You find out about Yangus’ story soon later in the game.

Dhoulmagus is randomly taking the lives of important figures around this vast and very large world, and you find clues bit-by-bit to trace down Dhoulmagus and end his killing spree. The adventure escalates every scene, to become one AMAZING adventure!
10/10

Gameplay: The gameplay is a classic RPG style, “turned base”, which basically means you attack, then the enemy attacks, though there are twists throughout that make it more interesting and enjoyable. Leveling up in this game takes quite a while, but every time you level up, you acquire “skill points”, which you can dispense at your own pleasing to certain attributes of your characters. There’s quite a bit of cool strategy in the battles too. You have a good amount of options to choose from.

The monsters featured in the game are great as well. There are many non-imaginable enemies, such as shiskabob type monster, but you also get the cool animee looking Dragons and Skeletons.
10/10

Graphics: The graphics in DQVIII are nothing short of amazing! The game supports a beautiful world, and the character animation is incredible. The guy who drew the characters for Dragon Ball Z also draws for the Dragon Quest games, so you can pick-out many similarities in characters. Everything graphical beauty in DQVIII is done extremely well. No glitches, nothing.
10/10

Sound: The soundtrack to this game is easily THE best I have ever heard. The music is excellently composed and used in the game. The characters voices are excellent as well. Very British, so you better not have a grudge against the British.
10/10

Overall, this game is pure excellence. Basically flawless, and every bit of game is an amazing experience. There’s tons of side-missions/bonus material as well, so the game will almost never finish (though the main goal of course comes along). I rank this game as my favorite of the new consoles along with the Hitman series, The Metal gear Solid series, and the Madden Franchise.

Overall Rating: 10/10

I also read the game's not loaded with a huge story, and there's not a lot of long cut-scenes. Does the game seem like that from what you guys have played?? Cause imo, large numbers of long cut-scenes takes away from the game and annoys me.

If you're thinking of Xenosaga's looooooong cutscenes, I dont think there is any like that.:thumb:

Yeah DQ8 comes with a free FFXII demo. And its pretty good, I'm still iffy about the battle system, FF was and should always be turn based. I'm definately going to get it because, hell, its FF but, I'm worried.:thumb:

DQ8 is great though.

FFXII battle system will be fine, it does get very hectic when u have it on active mode though, but meh o well u can choose between that and wait, but there hasnt been really long cut scenes in DQ8 unlike xenosaga which is just mind numbing long cut scenes

Is it based on Dragonball? I always see a guy in the commercials that looks like Trunks and carries a big sword.

no, but the guy who draws the pics of the dragon quest series is guy who created dragonball. the two are totally unrelated though.

I'm VERY interested in getting this game. All I want to know is, is it too cartoonish? I heard it sort of is....

Well, I've played on the game for about 56 hours now, and right now I'm Orb Hunting! I'm guessing I should complete this game in around 60 hours, therefore, me almost done.

The games fabulous. Deffinetly one of the best I've ever played. I'm hoping to see some more Dragon Quest releases in the future. I've never beaten a game that has lasted this long. The next longest was, hum, probably MGS3, which lasted about 12 hours...

I was fighting the metal slimes for a bit too, but only until I reached level 40. I killed off 2 King's, about 3 of those blob things, and a handful of the normal metal slimes.

King Metal Slime = 30,000 experience:eek:

That's what caught my attention. I never once played an RPG for the PS2 before getting this game for Christams. And now I'm looking all over for these types of old school RPG's.

Will that new "Tales of Legendaria (or something)" be similar to DQ8?

This game is wicked. I got it for Christmas, and I'm currently building some experience to fight Doulmaghus in the Dark Ruins. Yangus is my powerhouse, I like to focus on him!

Damn right f00. I wanna discuss other aspects of DQ8 but I am still trying to properly convey my liking of Jessica. I dont get why people are not going all Jessica-Alba-Sin-City on her yet. Come to think of it, that would suck..

Yeah.. that scene rocks hard. DQ8 probably have one of the best in-game engine.. what they can do in in-game cutscenes rivals or beats MGS3.. great stuff.

Maxed out Humanity for Yangus

Currently on rank S for the arena. I can't stand the stupid AI attacking that metal slime over and over at the last round....

I made my way up to Rank B, lost it, and I haven't continued yet. My team consists of The Living Statue, Pa Troll, and Hackersoarus (or something). I'm guessing I'll need some better members...
