Is this normal or am I likely hitting the drums wrong?

well it depends how fast they are wearing down. Mine start to wear down after like a month or so of playing, but if you ahve had them for like a week and theres almost nothing lefts, ya your doing somthing wrong haha. But ya, wood sticks will wear down alot haha

my wood sticks wear down a ton until they are almost little rectangular prisms on the tip of the stick, when I bought the Steve Gadd sigs, they have chipped yet at all which is pretty unusual for the amount of time I have had them

which is why nylon tipped sticks are better!

Definitely. They don't sound as good as wood, but theyre much more practical for playing.
And I've never had a tip fly off. Only stick issue I'm having now is sticks taking a lot of my rimshot abuse (because rimshots are my life)

My Gadd's tips are the most chipped out of all my my sticks, they only have about
3 weeks use.
that used to happen to me but not anymore.

It happends to all wood sticks. Just buy new sticks once it happends, unless you don't care about the sound. I find it is really dull and horrible sounding, on my cymbals, but I find it hard to get out and buy new sticks.

Ahh it happens, thats one of the reasons I always digged a good nylon tip.

mine used to wear down like crazy when i had horrible technique, but since i fixed all that, i've only had a little bit of wear on my tips. i do rotate through sticks though, which probably has a bit to do with it.

I got pissed at my last band practice. The tips on my sticks were totally gone (that's what happens when you buy cheap $4 drumsticks and play them for a month), and my cymbals were sounding all ****e because of it. Damn cheap drumsticks, I'm seriously considering switching to nylon.

Ya I'm pretty sure mine wear down good at about the month to a month and a half mark. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't just me.
Vic Firth 5A's are a good average stick though right? Or do you people consider it a crappy low end

Mine never wore down. The some tips did get slighty flattened becuase I would play on concrete and everything else I saw in the street. But the sticks that stay home are fine.

^^^ yeh same with me, ive had my wood tip 5A sticks for about...4 months and i play at about an average of half an hour to an hour a day...the tips are fine and i am a pretty hard hitter. I started off playing with nylon tips but i changed to wood tips just to experiment with them and i havnt gone back!!
vater has some good nylon tips

Nylons man!
If the tip wears down... then when I'm hitting the hihats or my ride... I'll play with the butt end of the stick. Not as good sounding, but far better than that of a wron down tip. The only nylon prblem I've had was a very small piece chip off my Vic Firth Rocks. But there's just something about a brand new 5b tip or a ball tip that just does it for me.

If it's really wearing down FAST (as in after a couple hours of playing), I'ld say that there is a possibility that you are using tips for all your hi-hat playing.
Try to use more of the shoulder of the stick. For me, I'll only play with the tip on the hats when playing ghost notes. All the rest will be with the shoulder. Then again, it depends on what kind of sound I'm after.
But 70% of the time, cymbals will be played with the shoulder of the stick except the ride, there I only use the shoulder on the bell or when I want a LOT of volume.
Next time you play, pay attention to what it is that you are doing on the hi-hat, as that is a real tip-killer if you use nothing but tips. Reason being that the ride moves as you stroke it. The hats don't, so the impact is bigger.
But like several said in here, wood sticks will chip and break. It's normal.

Yup. But not for the tips to wear down.
If your tips are getting cracked, chipped, etc before the rest of the stick is worn. It's 100% a technique issue.
I hit harder then most people I run into, though not excerssive and using great technique. Like most of the guys who play a lot of notes, you gotta put some force behind the stick to get it really moving.
My sticks break, crack etc from rimshots.. that's normal. I haven't had to ditch a stick in years from a tip breaking, and the last time I did was because I caught a rim.
Though I'm a big proponent of hitting harder, with condfidence in all the notes you play.

Wooden sticks weren't made to last forever. A long while maybe, if your technique doesn't suck ***, but your sticks will need replacing every once in a while.
