I've been doing alot of research lately and I stopped into Just Drums and Music Pro today...

I would like to upgrade my current drum set (Westbury :upset: ) to an intermediate/semi-pro kit. I was almost sure of buying a 5-piece SONOR Force 3005 but now I'm not too sure... If anyone has any experience with any intermediate/semi-pro kits please post...

Also please no flaming, you may tell your PERSONAL opinions based on EXPERIENCES. ex: Jim may have EXPERIENCED bad TAMA Customer Service and may post that, but if you've heard from a friend whose heard from a friend... please don't post...

Thanks

not too fond of the tom sizes... (12" x 9" and 13 x 10")

I would prefer 12" x 10" and 13" 11"

Sonor 3005. That is really all that needs to be said.

I would either go for the 3005 or a mapex pro m. Both are great kits, they are made in the same factory. I would go for the sonor as their hardware is better than mapexs and I prefere sonors tom mount. Make sure to try both kits out side by side to see which one has a sound you prefere.

The Advantages, they are pretty decent, Im not a fan of them much but I stillt hink they are good. But I would still go with Pro M or 300%, And I have palyed on both, My cousin used to own a 3005 and a music store in nova Scotia I went to one time had the Pro M

Yeah Seafroggy's I know what you mean. I only seen those kits in the massmusic shop but never played one of them =[. Basically it comes down to hardware, sound, and price. The 3005's might be cheaper but you might not like the toms or you might like the toms from mapex but not the hardware. Seems like a tough choice. This is one of the reasons on my next kit I'm just going all out so I want have to buy another lol.

I am pretty much looking for the most bang for my buck considering I will be owning this kit for a while...

My price range is $1500 max. I might spend a little more but not too much... I am also looking at used DW and TAMA Starclassics, aswell as high end MAPEXs, SONORs and PEARLs etc.

Well since we know your price range you could go for some Mapex Saturns now haha. Yamaha maples are a little more expensive but if you plan on keeping the kit for a while look into those too. If you can't test out these drums thats gonna suck bad.

I'd consider it a semi-pro/pro kit.

I'd go with the Sonor 3005 or the Catalina Birch set.

^Yes I have. I own a set of Pro M's and I've played the 3005's at a shop quite a ways away from me. Both are great kits and are very similar. Really the only thing that I could see hindering your choice is that the 3005 is a tad bit more expensive(at least here in the US).

$1500 CDN is approx. $1250 USD.

The only problem with buying used is I am very picky about shell sizes aswell as finishes. I also do not like the amount of scratches and dents in the second link...

I also have to locate an Ontarian MAPEX dealer if I decide with those... How is the mounting system? Comparable to SONOR? Also, what is the sound difference like (3005/M)? Should I look into birch?

Yes, they are awesome, but it is just a shell pack. That means no stands, or pedals.

Oh didn't know that. But he doesnt need stands or a pedal becuase he has that from his old set. Then when he has more money he can get a nice Iron Cobra or DW pedal or something.

I was at a gig on saturday and the house kit was a stage custom. It was a very nice kit. Nice big bass sound (it was miced though) and the toms sound rather nice, with the stock heads on aswell. I would look into them if the price is right. I would also go second hand if you can, there are some amazing deals out there.

The Sonors are very nice drums, I own a low-end Sonor set, it's still easy to tune, and gets nice tone, despite being relatively inexpensive.

I played Stage Customs for years, they are great drums, never had any real complaints about them except the tom mounts, but they didn't have any YESS or anything like that, older Stage Customs.

PDP kits you have to be selective with, there are some nice ones and there are a lot of lemons I've noticed and played around with.

Played an Export extensively before, and it continually left me unimpressed. I wouldn't recommend it.

Rockstars gave me the same impression as Exports, though I played them less, but I imagine Superstars are similar.

The mounting system on the Pro M is, IMO, amazing. It is small and discreet so the drum isn't weighed down and the finish isn't blocked but even so, it's really rugged and won't let you down. It also had the ball and joint adjustments so tom angles are super easy to get perfect and the actual tom arm doesn't even penetrate the bass shell so there's another plus. I really like the TAR system though. Both sets have great mounting systems that are designed really well so you don't have to worry about that. As far as sound is concerned, I've found both sets to be very resonant(based on my head choice)with great tone. A lot of the sound depends on how you tune the heads and what heads you use, but the drums themselves are immaculate and can sound beautiful if you let them :thumb:

I play on 3005's and Catalina Birchs on a regular basis. The Catalinas don't compare to the 3005's in the slightest. Go with the 3005's. They are Pro-level drums, solid construction, great customer service, and sound GREAT.

The guy at Just Drums wasn't too certain about Force 3005s I think mainly because they are made in China... Not that he is racist (I'm guessing) but judging by everyone's feedback they seem amazing... I just need to try them out... I think they'll blow my Westbury's away... BTW I would like a shell + hardware pack, hi-hat stand, two booms, snare stand and a bass pedal until I get an Iron Cobra... That's another reason I like the SONOR...

It seems that it has been left to me to throw peace paragon into the equation. But I dont know the prices in anything other than GBP, I have been on a currency calculator and it says 1,391.64 USD = 799GBP I think it would probably be a bit cheaper. In the UK paragons are rough equivalent to the pro ms and 3005s. I say paragon all the way if you have funds and a dealer near you
