2005 To Buy A Gun EP

I saw these guys open for Alexisonfire a couple weeks ago. I had never heard of them, so I was really surprised when the only instruments on the stage were a keyboard and a laptop computer. I had no clue what to expect, but it turned out to be awesome.

Their music is a bit difficult to describe. The computer provides a variety of unique sounds, and the vocals are fairly unique. The screaming (yes there is screaming) is unexpected, but yet it all seems to fit.

I suggest checking out some of their music on purevolume if you want a better feel for their sound, as I really am not doing it justice by trying to describe it in words. Also, if you are interested, I have Strange We Should Meet Here available on Soulseek and AIM.

One of the only bands that is actually "alternative" rock in my mind. Sure lots of bands get labeled that, but this is one of the bands that really is. A lot of Alt Rock is still guitar, bass, and drums. Cake spices it up with a trumpet.

Their albums are full of variety too. My favorite (and generally what is considered the best) album of theirs, Fashion Nugget, ranges from more laid back ballad-like pieces like Sad Songs and Waltzes, to more distortion laden rock pieces like their cover of I Will Survive. It's fun, catchy rock. Not very complicated music, but fans of Pop-Punk shouldn't struggle much with that. The lyrics are also great, very fun and good-spirited. Italian Leather Sofa being a highlight amongst all their albums.

Oh yeah, and if you don't like a Cake song, try another. You might like a different one because they are quite varied. And if you don't like any of their songs you just have bad taste in music :)

/already knows Idiot Pilot

Annoyingly, they played in York not long ago. I was gonna go see them, but the three people who I was meant to be going with all changed their minds. Arseholes. And sadly I'm not scene enough to go to a show on my own... :(

You'd be surprised how many people I've introduced them to. At least beyond a single or two. Usually The Distance and Never There.

Cake is so righteous.

How did that come about?

No idea. He just once made the mistake when he was drunk of telling me and our bassist that we are the only people he knows who don't call him Cake.

With predictable results.

Not a huge fan of Idiot Pilot. I haven't heard hardly anything by Cake though, so I'll go give them a listen. I remember they had a video out awhile ago, and I remember hating the music alot, but I won't hold that against them.
