They're still made in the same factory as the other Stingrays :p.

I believe they have different body woods and finishes, other than that everything is the same (pickups / electronics).

Great basses :D.

I guess the fact that they feel "cheap" is a just a psychological thing, spare the neck, scratchplate and paint.

SUBs, as far as I am aware, sound very similar to Stingrays, the electronics are the same, the wood is similar density and the neck only felt slightly different on the model I played. They only come in black I think, to mask the natural green colour of the wood.

And the scratchplate is made of cardboard. Other than that, they are generally very good quality, and a good substitute. (In my Opinion)

alot of peeps actualy prefer them to the 'proper' stingrays as they give off a more pre fender era tone, anyway congrats on the gift man :)

??
the one i played was diamond plate metal
they are not as high quality as stingrays, but are still better made than an mim fender.

I do like the look but as chris said you just feel like you could break it really easy as opposed to the stingray where you can pretty much play as hard as you want.

i have played a few music mans (music men?) both the stingrays and the sterlings, but never a sub, so i dont know what you mean by break it easily. do you mean like it is very light?

Subs dont come close to stingrays...I own a 1996 stingray and my friend I could throw this thing out of a chicago apartment studio and it would play great. SUBs rub me the wrong way the pickguard reminds me of cheap sheet metal, so anyways nice on the gift man.

I've only played one once which I don't think is long enough to base my personal opinon but when I did play it, it like chris said felt like it was cheap. ( sorry if I confused you earlier) but I do really enjoy the look of them and wouldn't mind playing one again.

I really dont think a sub uses the same pickup as a stingray

Yea, Subs feel cheap to me. Like the difference between a Rockbass and a Warwick.

i have a mm sterling and its awesome. i also played sterling and ray subs at my gc, and they sound good, they have more of a metal slap to em and sound close to the MM counterpart.
