open tunings I guess could be considered weird. Such as DADF#AD, but that's more of a guitar thing than bass

I recently tuned the bottom three strings of my sixer to F#-D-E and got good results from it. It's good if you like to tap, because you've got all of those really low notes and then you still have the top three in standard for your melodies.

There are many, many tunings that will give you some cool dark tonalities..If you're just going to play single notes, standard tuning is probably fine, but altered tunings offer some very nice possibilities for chords and harmonics. Think about what key you want to play in and try looking for tunings that might give you the best colors. A few that come to mind that you might want to try are: BEBEF#, BEBDG, BEAEG, BF#BDF#, CEbGDG, CDAEG, BDADE, BDADF, BDAEF...

Or restring your 5-string with a high string instead of a low B and try these: DADAC, DADAD, DADGA, DABbFC DADEA, DADAC, C#G#D#EC#, C#G#BG#E, C#G#C#G#C#, C#G#C#G#B...

Manring was told to develop as a bassist before experimenting with altered tunings. So he did. Look at him now. :amaze:

I suggest you learn some theory (things such a key signatures) and a lot about harmonics, and then try making up your own tunings from what you've learned.
