First of all, this movie isn't technically out in the US yet. I believe an edited version of the film will be in America by December '06. So, unless you want to wait that long to see a kickass movie I suggest you find an asian website that sells it and/or download the torrent (http://ts.searching.com/directory.asp?mode=torrentdetails&id=469345&query=Tom+Yum+Goong)(and buy it when it comes to the US!).
This movie stars Tony Jaa whose real name is Panom Yeerum. He was also the star in Ong-Bak, and for those of you who saw MK: Annihilation, he was a stunt double for the actors who played Liu Kang and Lord Rayden.
In Tom Yum Goong, Kham (Tony Jaa), goes to Australia after two of his families elephants are stolen by animal traffickers. The movie starts off with scenes of when Kham was a child, playing with the elephants. The movie then skips forward to the present where one of the elephants is going to be offered to the King for his travelling use. Of course everything goes wrong. Kham's father gets shot and the elephant and his/her child get stolen. Kham then sets off on his quest to get the two elephants back. Along the way, he meets up with an Australian policeman (Petchtai Wongkamlao who was also in Ong-Bak) who helps him out. Kham eventually finds the guy who took his elephants who leads him to the head of the traffickers and all her bodyguards.
The plot and acting in this movie is far better then Ong-Bak. It looks like Tony Jaa took some acting classes so instead of laughing at every 'plot' scene, it is surprisingly decent. However, there are some plot holes and in a couple places it seems like the plot just jumps ahead to the next action scene without explaining how it got there.. not that I'm complaining.
And that brings me to the action. The beginning of the movie starts out with little to no action, and although some quick fights occur after Kham begins his quest, the action doesn't really start until the middle of the movie. There are plenty of bone-crushing, brutally violent fight scenes in this movie. Kham fights off everything from a gang that use BMX bikes/roller skates to attack with, to Tom Yum Goongs version of Kill Bill's Crazy Eighty-Eights minus the swords. Besides the merciless massacre that Kham deals out using his Muay Thai fighting style, there are also plenty of jaw-dropping acrobatic moves. I don't want to spoil anything for you, but let's just say even if you saw Ong-Bak, some of the stuff he does will blow you away! Especially the "glass wall" scene. Unfortunately, in this movie they do not replay the ****ing insane moves that Tony Jaa pulls off, so you have to do it manually. Also there's a chase scene like the Tuk-Tuk scene from Ong-Bak, but instead this time they're using what look like canoes with motors.
Summary: Tom Yum Goong is a must see if you are into martial arts movies or just want to see scene after scene of people getting the living **** beaten out of them. The acting and plot is also a big step up from Ong Bak, but it still takes a backseat to the action. Oh yea, and of course no wires or special effects were used to create the fight scenes, so if you like seeing those gay *** movies where people run across an entire forest on the top of the trees or float up 15 feet in the air to do a kick, you should look elsewhere. In this movie, the guy is actually kicking up that high (I don't know exactly the height, but his reach is incredible).
Here's a couple trailers (http://www.tomyumgoongmovie.com/html/trailer/index_e.asp) if you wanna check them out.
