Okay, well I was sitting here thinking about how it might be interesting for people to weigh in on bad video game consoles.

The Rules

1. Nominate video game consoles that you have a fair amount of knowledge or experience with (portables included).

2. When you nominate a system, be sure to include a little bio about what made it bad. Was it the liscensing, advertising, control scheme, graphics, peripeherals, etc. Be sure to mention a few of it's notably bad games or accessories.

3. Anything goes. If you have a valid reason for putting Nintendo DS or Playstation, then that's fine.

The Elimination Process

Basically, the depending on the amount of nominees, about 1/3 of the top vote getters will move on to the next round.

The Gamegear, well, the games were crap. Sure it was nice that it had color, but the lineup wasn't great. Besides, that thing was huge, it doubled as a club that I could use for beatings.

If you've ever played a Virtual Boy, you know why I nominated it. The first time I played it, a friend of mine brought it to school. I had to put it on my head and rest it on the freakin table for chrissakes! Not to mention unresponsive controls.

Yeah, but in the eyes of most developers and the mainstream along with the Revolution's promise to only be 2-3 times more powerful than the 'Cube, it really does Nintendo no favors.

Sega CD had some great games, and Sonic CD is up there with Sonic 1 and 2.

In terms of most problematic launch it'd be right up there with the worst of them. But I believe it'll get better as time goes on.

Although I'd hate to see my power bill after a month of using it.

Sega Saturn had better games than the Sega CD, and the Sega CD had more problems aswell. I'll admit that the Sega Saturn did cripple sega though, so it was the worst console for them anyway.

I feel bad for Sega, all their consoles failed even though some of them kicked serious ***. (Genesis, Game Gear, Dreamcast (you could play backup games with no modchip))

strange, It had some excellent games, but was let down by bad marketing from Nintendo, a lack of "grown up" games and the fact that although the N64 was twice as powerful than the PSX, it had nowhere near the quality titles available, and there was little difference in quality in game engines and the like.

I think N64 is almost as good as the GCN. I'm just a hardcore Nintendo fan so I guess I'm kinda biased. At the time the N64 first came out, I went with the PSX because I was pretty young, and just got it because my neighbour had it. I later won an N64 in a mini-put compitition, and didn't appreciate it that much. Now looking back at all the great games there were, I regret selling it.

The DS. It relied on a stupid gimmick to sell games, and that isn't going very well as far as I am concerned. The same old suspects were brought out at the release in the form of Mario, Metroid and some other Ninty big games. Also, it's too big, especially with the screen opened up, and I just found it very boring and fiddly to use.
Someone hasn't played Meteos, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!, Sonic Rush, Mario Kart DS, Kirby Power Paintbrush/Canvas Curse, Phoenix Wright, American Sk8land, Advance Wars DS, or any of the later Atari consoles, or the Game.com, or the N-Gage, or the Philips CD-i, or any of the other countless failed consoles.

Also the Game Gear is not one of the worst consoles, it rocked serious *** in it's day. Sonic series, Shinobi series, etc. So much better than the game boy, bigger screen with full color and great games. Not saying the gameboy didn't have great games but I preferred the gamegear. (I went through 2 game gears and about 3 game boys when I was younger for some reason...) Also if you were in a fight with your game gear, it would prove a powerful ally.

I think the PSP is an amazing handheld, but I don't want to pay that much for it. The graphics are great, and it has alot of neat features, but it's not something I would be using 24/7.

Anyhow, on a different note, I saw Agalloch at the Day of the Equinox in Toronto. I also got to meet them. :cool:

I don't know if there is much time left in it, with the amount of high quality DS games avaliable the PSP is fast becoming just another shortlived handheld pwned by Nintendo.
Look at the DS games that have come out within the last month - Animal Crossing, Mario and Luigi 2, Mario Kart, Tony Hawk, Sonic Rush, Viewtiful Joe
Compare this to all the games on PSP since its release.

I dont get why so many people are ragging on Dreamcast. It was a good little console, just nobody bought it. Shenmue was probably one of the most ambitious and well-designed games ever, in my opinion.
Yeah, it had some tough competition too, coming out after the N64, and before the PS2, both of which had much more hype and advertising.

true, also Phantasy Star Online. The Dreamcast was playing online while the ps2 was just releasing gta3 and the Dreamcast had those awesome memory cards with the screen on them.

Can't rag on the Genesis!!! I still play mine (well it's not mine, belongs to a friend, but I still have mine...at home). MK, Theme Park, Lemmings, Sonic and Knuckles, PGA Tour...ahh...pixelly heaven!!

Was wondering the other day though, was there a point at which it became nessecary to have 6 buttons, as opposed to just cool? I definitely remember the later MK's having high punch/low punch, high kick/low kick, etc. But I can't remember if you *had* to have a 6 button Gen controller to play certain games. Might pick one up if that's the case!

The only one that even comes close to the Jaguar in sheer craptitude is the Virtua Boy, but they barely released any games for it, whereas the Jaguar had all sorts of horrendous titles.

I don't even count the CD-i though, because they seriously had zilch games for it.

Because I hate Sony and everything the stand for. When I got my PS2 I took it home and played it for two hours. Then it overheated and melted. So I got a new one. and it's falling apart, and I've had it less than a year. **** off Sony.

Well, it's nice to know you base your opinion off of completely nothing. My PS2 is working flawlessy and it was one of the earlier ones.

The fact that they're merchandise is cheaply made. And just because you're PS2 is fine doesn't mean they're all that way. Several of my friends bought PS2 and similar sh¡t happened to them too.

The number of those is very low and every console has those problems. Look at the number of 360's being sent back for errors. So, saying this about sony is stupid becuase it happens to every console.

I don't agree with what that dude said, but I have heard that Sony stuff isn't really reliable. I know people who've got through 2,3 or 4 PS1's and 2's. Doesn't affect my opinion of the console as a whole though. If the 360 doesn't pick up steam soon I might get a PS3 instead.
But my original NES, Game Boy, Game Boy colour, Game Boy Advance, N64 and Gamecube all still work... (I never had a SNES)

ya, in games like MK3 you kinda need the 6 button contoller

Street Fighter needed 6 buttons. That is the only reason I ever bought the controller.

Take every system that hasn't been released (or was released last week) off the list because you can't know a damn thing about a system until you've played one.

Also, as made obvious by the fact that 4 people have voted for the dreamcast, you have to have owned the system to nominate it. Anyone who owned a dreamcast knows that it is more likely to earn best console than worst.

And finally, hating a console because it broke on you doesn't count. If that were the case, then the Original nintendo takes the cake. You should judge the console by its games and its enjoyability, not it's durability.

My friend owned a ps2. Right when it was released. He took it with him when he would go to friends houses and dorm rooms and the like. A console isn't meant for travel and *gasp* it only lasted 2 years and was past warrenty.

And besides, even if it was a faulty laser, was that the fault of Sony, or the company that sold Sony their laser lenses?

My PS2 is working fine. I dont think you should judge a product that isnt even out just because you couldnt look after your PS2.

I only partially agree with that. If a company can't produce a reliable product, they don't deserve your hard-earned money. But yeah, how much fun a console is to play is definitely the most important factor in judging it.
