View Full Version : All this talk of building snares got me thinking...

I'm probaly gonna build my own snare. I'm gonna order a snare and get it pre-drilled and the bearing edges cut. I know it's not really "building" my own snare, but I don't have all the tools or no-how yet.
I have a couple questions: I'm looking for a snare with a nice high tight crack, but still has some body to it. I was thinking about making a 6x13" Keller Maple snare or a 3x13" Keller Maple snare. Which do you think would sound better?
I was also wondering if Precision Drums was a good place to order my shell and parts?
try ordering the shell from conaway(sp?). i know they got some reasonable prices.

I would try that, but like I said, I don't have the know-how or tools to do that.
As for everyone else thanks alot for the advice, I think I'm gonna order off Drum Maker because the prices are better.

Staves are crazy hard to build. I'd wait till you know a lot about them before you try.

^I agree. They're definitely pricier, but it's still a huge step up.

A bit more unique than your average 10 ply keller maple as well..
I want to get a quilted maple stave snare, but I just keep finding great deals on other stuff D:

staves are the loudest your gonna get...unless you want a 40 ply vented snare. and depending on the wood.
(I'm cutting down a beech tree in my backyard, it's pretty big and it looks pretty old, should I save the wood and give it to my drum builder friend and have him make me a kit or a snare or something?)

Uh..........No. Why would it be louder, shell thickness determines loundness. The big difference(sonically) is resonance. Staves have less(a lot less) glue than plys, so more resonance.
About the tree, why not? Go ahead and do it.

Yeah, definitely, thinner drums only really work as aux snares, IMO.
