I'm gonna be leaving here(new zealand) for California in August 2006 and
will be there goin to school living with a host family and whatnot for a year.
Do you think that I should just sell my current drumset before I leave and work
towards getting a new one when i'm there.
I have a Pacific EZ set, so it's not exactly very good.

This is coming from a Asian migrant to New Zealand...Its boring as hell..Theres absoltely nothing to do after 5.30 and even there there are so few shops. Its nice as a tourist destination..not to live in!

well I guess if you compare it to an asian country, don't they have like 3 story malls and ****?, go clubbing and ****, that's what everyone else in Auckland does. Or learn to skate.

3 stories? that was so 20 years ago. try 7-10 story high malls the size of Botany.....including the car parks....:) and 3-4 in the morning if you have the munchies..there will be cheap food by the road to feast on :)...2 bucks can get you the meanest feed!

No. Bakersfield sucks. (sorry if you live there, but you know it)

Unfortunate you don't know where you are going. That can make a huge difference.. like if you should go or not!

Getting stuck somewhere like bakersfield, fresno, modesto, etc for a year would suck in such a major way.

However you could land the other way, get dropped into somewhere in Orange County near the beach...

There's the other way too, some place up north where not only is it green, wet and cold. But everyone is stoned.

Eh good luck, hard to say about the drums at all. California is the size of most small countries and to say you are randomly goign to some place. Well who knows.. we have from harsh deserts, very tall mountians, forests, beaches, flatlands, wetlands and such.

If you'll have a place for a drumset, or to use it is so hard to tell. Odd's are yes. However I'm thinking just to ship your set over would cost as much as buying a cheap one here.

Then of course, maybe your host family is in Newport Beach, and you'll never have time to drum anyway because you'll be always out experiencing the life you've watched on MTV.

If you hit So Cal though, learn to surf. It's world class and the chicks are hot.

yourstruly
12-01-2005, 06:37 PM
yeah there are lots of variables, i'm hoping they put me somewhere cool, or atleast give me a few choices when they find willing host families.
I wont really know 'till I apply and they start interviewing me and stuff.
Haha California is ****loads bigger than the entire NZ.
Do most schools over there have Music as a subject at school?

Bone
12-01-2005, 07:13 PM
I assume you mean colleges... yes most offer some music major. Though in all honesty, most would be a total waste of time to attend. You don't have to be a music major to play in the bands either, so don't let playing music in college force you into being a music major.

In the US at least, the only thing a music degree is good for is teaching. While the knowledge can be useful as a musician, it can be aquired faster, cheaper and you could get a degree that's actually useful with that time in school.

12-01-2005, 07:28 PM
schools have music programs. but i guess your going to college.

if you get anywhere in the bay area where i am, youll be in drumming heaven. Drum clnics never stop coming through here, jimmy degrasso brings top notch drummers through here and theres at least five drum shops.
http://sanjoseprodrum.com/clinics.htm and coming in januarty jason bittner

other drummers include virgil donati, thomas lang, mylious johnson, kenny aronoff, steve gadd, louie bellson lives around here.

theres a lot of great teachers around here also and even a drumming school.

I mean in Highschool, the only College I would ever get into is Clown College. A music class in Cali like here would be good for meeting other aspiring musicians.

Oh well that's a whole different thing. Most highschools have some sembalence of a music program. The range however is amazing. From horrible to world class.

Get stuck at some inner city highschool, don't even waste your time doing band there. Get put into Irvine Highschool.. well they weant to China the other year to play and Italy the year before, VicFirth, Zildjian, Remo and Yamaha sponorships, etc

Though the average highschool has a pearl export (circa 1985) and possibly cymbals for it.

How old are you?

Age limits some things in the US.

yourstruly
12-02-2005, 03:06 AM
15, will be 16 when I go . Seems like there'll be alot of luck involved in this.

Bone
12-02-2005, 03:09 AM
Yup! Worth it I'd say.

A 16 yr old dropped into an orange county highschool, well assuming you were good looking enough and all (Hey it IS orange county). That could turn out to be a most incredible year.

Dropped into Fresno however... well if that happens let me know, that'd be like punishment.

*shrug* I was at a highschool the other day, it's changed a "bit". I don't remember all those strippers walking around.. oh wait.. I mean female students. *end rant on declining morality in schools*

whate xactly is so bad about fresno and bakersfield?

Bone
12-03-2005, 03:30 AM
Well take a desert. A big one. Nothing around.. in a very literal you drive for hours and there is nothing.. nothing around. Throw some scattered groups of people in a couple of spots, add in some argiculture/farming.

That's pretty much it.
