Well it's almost Christmas so I'm gonna ask for a new drum set. I still have the crappy Acclaim one I started out with 5 years ago. I've never shopped for sets though. I want a 5-piece. Like maybe a high end intermediate one or something. I don't really know what to look for in a set though since I just bought the best cymbals I could for the last 5 years. So I turn to the drum forum. Help me find a good set. Companies I'm liking are Mapex, Yamaha, Tama, and possibly Pearl.

EDIT-Hahaha I meant to say I want a 5-piece it's just at the time I was thinking about how fun it would be to play on a 9-piece.

A 9 piece (good/quality) intermediate kit is going to cost in the neighborhood of $2k-$3k USD. Thats if your talking about 2 bass drums, 5 toms, 1 snare, and 1 aux. snare.

You could probably get a really great force 3005 from Sonor for about $2500 or so. You're not going to get a 9 piece Yamaha for that though!!

Premier 'Artist'
Mapex 'Pro M'
Anything from DW

Those are some really good intermediate kits, there are also many others.

^ Do you mean Pacific?

I'd say that the Mapex Pro M would be a great kit for you or the Sonor equivalent, the 3005. These are awesome kits and I myself own a Pro M and it is awesome :thumb:

If DW is an intermediate kit at an intermediate price level, I'd hate to see what a kit at the professional level costs. Guess its time to sell the VW... :|

3005 if you dont have a big budget.

my biased vote is for any PDP kit (except the EZ!). :)

I have the FS (and LOVE it!), but depending on wood/sound preference, you might want something else from them.

Go for some nice Yamaha Stage Customs. Good intermidiate set. Sonor's 2005s are also nice.

if hes been playing for 5 years he should probably go for a pro kit, as hes probably not intermediate anymore

Pearl Reference
Pearl Masters
Yamaha Oak Custom
Yamaha Maple Custom
Sonor Delite
Sonor Designer
the Pacific CX/MX/LX/LXE's are kits in the pro level at intermediate prices.

also look into getting custom pieces to your set, like percussion, or a particular snare, hardware etc.

Well, hmm, do you think I should go for a pro set? I have been playing on a set since I was 10, and am 15 now. I've practiced hours daily for quite some time now, and it's now like I didn't know what I was doing when I started. I played sax in elementary school so I already knew music when I started drums. Also now I'm also learning guitar and am in a band as a drummer, so it's not like I'm going to quit anytime soon. I'll also end up buying a pro set eventually anyway so why waste money on an intermediate when I could go straight to a pro set? Yeah I guess I maybe should look into them.

Yeah. As you might be able to tell, I blew all my cash on nice cymbals. 'Cept for the Wuhan and the ZBT was pretty cheap too. I hate that thing. It's just like, RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIII
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING forever and ever and overshadows EVERYTHING!!!!

ZBT hats are worse than the ride. They sound like dinner plates caked in peanut butter

unfortunately, my parents are poor and I must deal with a ZBT set, but I guess it's better than my old B8 set.

zbt are not better than b8. keep the b8's if you can and just save.

An intermediate kit would be either a sonor force 3005 or a mapex pro m. For a professional level kit look into yamaha. I would suggest maple custom and the absolute series.

How's the Yamaha Absolute Maple Standard 5 Piece Set?

EDIT: Also, the Mapex Pro-M is maple and is only $1000. Is that good or is there some sort of catch that I'm not seeing?

Nope. Its just great. I'd get a Sonor 2005, though.

im not familiar very much with mapex, ive never even seen one, so i cant comment on the kit itself, but i think you got the wrong idea about the types of woods, there are high quality and low quality of every wood, maple isnt special, its all about the bearing edges, how many layers, etc etc.

They arent that bad though..haha. The hats would be good if they are "seasoned" properly. My school uses Zbt Cymbals. The hat(its old and dirty) is nice, hate the ride though.

I think most people on this forum can count out Sonor Designers.

My reccomendations:

Mapex Saturn/Orion
Sonor Delite
Yamaha Beech/Maple/Oak Custom
Yamaha Absolute
And (if you like birch) Yamaha Recording Custom

If you're looking at intermediate then i'd say go for Mapex Pro-M or Sonor force 3005. I have a 3005 aux snare and its awesome
