I really want to get a set of these with hats, ride and crash but I dont have enough money to buy the proper paragons so I was wondering if theres any cymbals that sound more or less the same without the same price tag?
Oh and does he use these in Tom Sawyer (studio)?

Nice one

In Tom Sawyer? This line has only been around for a couple of years and before that he used (mostly) Zildjian cymbals.

Although I understand he's used the same Sabian ride for about 30 years.

Well I'm getting the complete Paragon set for X-mas!!! (Well my lady freind had kinda hinted at it.) We are moving in a week and I walked in as she was packing the huge steel case it comes with...OMG...she let me have the ride as an early present...its to die for...can't wait 30 more days...

You ever seen that promotional video about the Paragons with Neil in it? He claims he used the Sabian pretty much all the way through since he bought it. According to (DB)Jim he also used Wuhan chinas, both despite the fact he was endorsed by Zildjian.

That is correct.

SABIAN was founded in late 1981, on the banks of the St. John River in the tiny village of Meductic, New Brunswick.

So even if he bought one of their rides as soon as Sabian was founded, he would still only have had it for about 24 years.

nope ~ that was a lie told during his Zildjian days.

the new story is that it was/is a vintage Sabian.

youll never get a straight answer... even from Neil himself

Really? I read it in DRUM! They did a whole thing about all his setups through the past years.

I know he used Wuhans though. Didn't know they were so old.

I live like 20 mins away from there, theres so many Sabian signs around haha. Im so proud to claim I live by Midicute it makes me look big haha. But yet, I ahve never taken a tour of the factory :S I have always wanted to, just my parents can never take me, and none of my friends play drums haha

I tried the 10" splash yesterday and then compared it to a 10" AA splash. If I remember correctly they sounded almost IDENTICAL... :thumb:

He had an old zilco ride, those are the cymbals that were made in the sabian factory before in became sabian.

he did say in the Sabian promo vid that he had been using that Sabian ride for 27 years which does make things confusing. Maybe it was an early prototype that he really liked. He's always had two chinas and I'm pretty sure that one was a Zildjian and one was a Wuhan up until the Paragons came out. I wonder why Zildjian couldn't/ wouldn't make him what he wanted over all those years.

FL3P, Zildjian doesn't like putting out whole series of cymbals based on what one artist wants. Peart has a full line of cymbals that are all exactly what he wants, the only Zildjian artist who comes close to that is Gadd, and he just got a set of 4. Various other artists have 1 or 2 signature cymbals, no one has a set near the size of Peart's, because Zildjian doesn't do that. Just business. Personally, I find if you can't find what you want in Zildjian's sound palette, you're *very* picky, not to say that Peart isn't a drummer who deserves whatever specific sounds he wants.

I agree, there are plenty of choices and if you are willing to look around you will find what you want.

The Paragons are a mix of the AA, AAX and HH lines. So somewhere in there you might be able to find something like the paragons(or at leaste something you'll like), you're still going to be spending some cash.
Also to playwithfire, Gadd only had a hand in the design of those cymbals, they were not made as the Gadd custom line.

Also to playwithfire, Gadd only had a hand in the design of those cymbals, they were not made as the Gadd custom line. They aren't named "Gadd's Sigs" or anything like that, but for all intents and purposes they are sold as a Gadd Signature cymbal, they were based off of his old cymbals. Zildjian doesn't do signature cymbals per se, but for all intents and purposes, the cymbals that they market that are made hand in hand with an artist, are signature cymbals. Just like the new Dry Complex rides might as well be called the "Bill Stewart Special".

Crash of Doom - Dennis Chambers Trash Crash
Left Side Ride - Peter Erskine LSR

And so on...

EDIT: From the Zildjian site...

18" K CUSTOM SESSION RIDE

Designed with Steve Gadd, replicating his personal Ride. More controlled sound that is lower in pitch but with enough spread to ride on top of the music. Unlathed with a brilliant finish.

geeze, all this arguement. The guy just wanted a cymbal that were almost as good as paragons with a lower price. And I say AA's are your best bet there.

Trying to play the "No, really. I never liked Zildjian, I played at least one Sabian all along!" card. I know the truth! I'll never buy Sabian! 22" A Ping rides: the ride the experts know Neil *really* used! Ping for life baby!

On musiciansfriend.com theres a pack of B8s and it says 'Developed with Neil Peart of Rush' ? Meh, you get 14" B8 Hats, 16" B8 Pro Rock Crash, 20" Power Rock Ride and a 10" Paragon Splash for free. Now when they say 'Developed with Neil Peart of Rush' could they be talking about the free splash or the actual set? From what people have said the paragon set consists of AA, AAX and HH. This is getting confusing.

How about the hats from Tom Sawyer on the Moving Pictures album, they sound so cool!

Most likely the free splash so they could put his name on it.
As for the AA, AAX and HH, The Paragons are pressed like the AAX line, Lathed like the AA line and the bell is hammered like the HH line if I remember correctly (someone will probably corret me, but its something like that). So its a mixture of the methods used to make those linee that goes into the Paragons cymbals not actual AA, AAX and HH cymbals.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure some, if not all, Paragons have AAX style lathing on one side and AA style lathing on the other.

I'd say if you want Paragons, save your money and buy the set or them all individually, but either way it'll cost you. Personally I think they're kind of gongy/clangy. Reminisent of the XS20 series
