Oh man! Just got back from ym auditions and me, and another drummer in another band, both went out of time in our songs because we couldn't hear the guitarists/bassists etc. and the other drummer went on about 10 seconds after the song finishes lol. But anyway, in my eyes, my band didnt do very well, i went out of time but our guitarist managed to make it sound ok. We are also up against guitarists and drummer who played in last years summer show and they have been playing for over 3 years each. SO whether i get through or not depends on what the judges THINK we can do when performing.
By the way, they all smiled when we did ours, i think because it was more original lol (bryan adams-summer of '69)
p.s.Sorry for going on but now its all said... thanks

as a drummer you should be able to play the entire song by yourself in perfect time. never-ever rely on a band member to cue you for anything, that way youll never mess up :thumb:

How could you be out of time? The rest of the band should follow you, as you are the rhytm of the band :)

Oh well, it sucks when you can't hear the rest of the band, I know that from experience :p

So, where's this audition exactly for? Some battle of the bands stuff?

^ Oh yess I do. My idiot singer decided to turn the monitors off half way through the first song because he liked not being able to hear himself. That song would have been a disaster if it wasn't our most played song. After that I got the sound guy to move a monitor beside me and turn it on so I could hear everthing, needless to say the rest of the show went well.

On topic.... Good luck man, hope you get in. What were you auditioning for anyway.

Don't worry man, it happens to all of us. It's happened to me twice. The thing you should do is you should sing the song in your head.

That way you never forget transitions.

Try it, it works for me.

hope ya get in.

True... but sometimes you just kinda get grooving and forget.

I think I must suck at drums cause there's no way I could do this for all our songs...

for example:

in one song, the guitar plays a clean part, and I do this little buzz roll at a certain time during this clean part, and then the clean part continues for a bit, and then the distortion comes in and I start playing the main part of the song.. how would I do that without listening to the guitar?

can someone explain exactly what monitors are??

they're speakers on the stage, usually in front of the singer/guitarist/bassist, and to the side of the drummer, that plays back certain busses. For example, in a drummer's monitor, you might want to hear singer and bassist (maybe guitar), but you don't want to hear yourself, as that might create feedback and also would make it harder to hear the other band members.

WIthout monitors, the only way to hear what you are doing is what's going out of the amps or the PAs, which from the stage vantage point is almost impossible to hear, trust me...luckily I knew the songs very well to not worry about it.

If I was you I'd twist the singer's arm around his back, get him on the floor and make him promise never to do it again, and then just to make sure he doesn't rip his arms out of his sockets. And then elbow drop him from the drum riser. Heh, he'd think twice before doing that again!

well thanks for all the replys. Word going round is that the judges are trying to decide between me and another group in our year. And basically if anything is in our favour it is that the judges liked the song because we could see they were all smiling, and that it is very orginal. I hope for gods sake, if we do get through, that i will actually be able to hear the guitar from our lead singer. If not then we are doomed to eternal out of timeness. lol about the the monitor being switched off. If we could have monitors and stuff then im in favour of it however i think the school has only just managed to afford a new PA system. I doubt our music teacher has even heard of monitors!!! thanks again for the help.

ya, i don't see how you could play w/o them..

you can, and you should be able to play songs without them......but they're 1000s time better to have, and you don't have to strain and concentrate all the time to hear the music.

however, you have to have damn good ears to hear w/o monitors. Luckily I'm a jazz vet so I got pretty good ears to listening for different sections.

Well just thought i'd update: we have been told by some people that we know that whether we get in is down to how they like the song compared to another group. And we have also been told that we have a better chance than the other group, only because of the choice of song. We thought it would be a good one to do :p well just thought id say whats going on now...

Being out of time because you can't hear the guitar makes no sense.
Either you rely on the guitarists and whatnot to keep your time for you (should be the other way) or they were out of time, not you.

If you're the one speeding up/slowing down/bragging then yes you are the one out of time.
