View Full Version : Just got back from Wooten...

...and all I have to say is that was the best freakin concert I've ever seen...well, it's tied with Vai.

The lights come on, and Vic is standing on top of his amps, holding his signature Ying-Yang Fodera. He proceeds to go through a bunch of the craziest solo runs I've ever seen, including selections from CT and What Did He Say?. The band comes out (a drummer, Reggie on guitar, his other bro on keys, his bass tech on bass, and MC Divinity and this other girl with mics), and they start playing some of the funkiest music I've ever heard, with some of the best bass playing I've ever witnessed. I was leaning on the stage...Vic was about ten inches away from me, ripping out this crazy solo at one point. Reggie Wooten got so close to me I could smell his freakin cologne. They covered Kashmir, Fire, and a James Brown tune (Sex Machine, I think?). Vic did Amazing Grace. MC Divinity did this pretty cool RATM-sounding tune, rapping and playing a Modulus 4 string.

Now here's something spectacular:

According to Vic, for the first time in TWENTY YEARS, all five Wooten brothers were on stage together. They brought their other brother, Willy, out to play sax (two at the same time, actually). And like Victor said, it's the first time they've played on a stage together in twenty years.

Vic did all those crazy stage tricks, including hurling that one bass around, and breaking a string on his Ying Yang. He had a black Fodera with turquoise strings, and turqoise LEDs that lit up from the 24 fret up to the butterfly on the headstock when he was playing. It had some sort of whammy bar on it, but he wasn't using it. He was playing his Foderas through an SVT-4 Pro, an Ampeg BXT 4X10 and a 1X15, and an Ampeg SVP-BSP Billy Sheehan preamp, just like mine :D .

10/10.

Zeppelin, what was Future Man(the drummer) using? When I saw them he was using his drum guitar and for his solo he got on a regular drum set. I would have liked to see him use his drum suit, but oh well.

He used the normal drummer's kit, and a drum pad that was programmed to sound like a hand drum when they brought the old drummer back in.

Jody: Reggie, to me, seemed like a mix of Hendrix, Morello, and Malmsteen with something completely new mixed in. It was crazy. But Vic went beyond what I thought he could do prior to the concert.

Neal: :D

I DT'ed last night until I had a blister covering the entire side of my thumb.

I saw that show over the summer one of the best shows I've ever been too. Did he give is bass out to the crowd and have them play a solo? They did that at the one I was at and victor left the stage and this guy went insane and victor came back out and reggie and victor both looks so shocked to see this kid kill it.

At the show I went to, Reggie played the most amazing version of the star spangled banner I've ever seen. For the last minute or so it was just dive bombs lower than I previously though possible. I thought he was going to break the bridge off of his guitar.

Yeah, those shows are incredible.

Its hard to imagine Wooten selling out a show, not necessarily just wooten but any of the virtuoso solo bassist, I just dont meet many fans.

I must say i still have no desire to see this sort of wankfest concert. I tend to find him and many bass virtusos a little boring (seen solo sheehan and Vai sheehan and i just was dumbfounded by boredom)

Oh, if you think that, you'll be in for one hell of a suprise if you do end up going to a Victor Wooten concert. Sure, theres chops, but zero wanks. It's just the grooviest three hours you will EVER see. As soon as he busts out with What Did He Say?, you'll be clapping and moving to the music along the entire length of the performance.

My cousin put it this way. Seeing Victor Wooten live isn't a concert. It's a musical experience.

i saw the flecktones once at the uptown in k.c. i think it was right after "left of cool" came out. victor freakin kills. my jaw was on the floor the whole night. i would have loved to have seen the lineup u saw tho. bela is a bad as banjo player but i can only stand the sound of banjo for so long.

yeah, I suppose you are right.

Speak for yourself, I eat breakfast with Sheehan, and he has the little pancakes; using them as a metaphor for his LITTLE skill in comparison to the majority of bassers on the MX forums.

Sade
12-01-2005, 08:52 AM
yeah, I suppose you are right.

And if I may be serious for a minuet, I've seen Sheehan play many times. And I can assure you, he is wanking. There is no emotion, he's just playing as fast as he can, as much as he can.

Compare his bass solo to a Hamm bass solo. Kthxownedbyebye.
