i don't know if this has been done before but it seems like an interesting idea to me. i was thinking we could have a competition where people are randomly selected to be someone else's partner and those two people collaborate to come up with a nice song. for example, one person lays down a supporting jazzy walking bassline and the other person solos over it. or someone lays down a supporting fast metal bassline and the other person solos over it etc etc. what do ya'll think? good idea? bad idea?

it seems like it would require too much collaboration (although in theory it really isn't that difficult to pull off). I can envision the flame wars among partners now.... (that's a ****ty solo.. that's a ****ty bassline)....

ha, remember the guitar/bass comp....how did that end up going? I know I was supposed to do this metal/techno/prog thing, but the guitarist dropped out when we were half way done.

i like the idea, but i know little theory, and probably dont have the right level of recording equipment for anything more than sub-par level music.

well i don't think we will have enough people to have different skill categories, but i'm cool with people picking their partners..only problem with that is a very skilled person is obviously going to pick another very skilled person for their partner..i dunno, maybe we should just start with making a list of who's willing to do it and go from there..i'll start making the list.

actually maybe we should have people say what kind of music they want to write so we can pair people up that way? like me for example. i'd like to write something along the lines of mellow and melodic with some delay and chorus possibly. etc.

i would write trip hop (http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=257505) with less bass influence and more song influence. i like to focus on the whole.

i have a neat idea for a backing melodic tapping bassline, my only issue is i don't have a delay pedal. i will either 1. use the delay effect that's built into my recording proggy (which will probably not sound too good) or go to GC tomorrow and look for a nice used pedal. anyway, i'll add you guys to the list and see where we're at so far......if sade tried this before then maybe he'll be interested.

i have no problem with people picking their partners. i just don't want all the elites pairing up because then it obviously won't be fair. what kind of rules do you guys want? i want effects allowed and any amount of tracks. should we allow drum tracks? what's the max time limit?

hmm... sounds like a great idea. I'd be down for it. I really don't care who I get paired up with, but my only problem is that I don't think i'm too creative, but if the other person has ideas i think it'd work.

I recently figured out how to record on my computer, so I can now record, so let's see where this goes

also, i think we should put up what we're recording with so we don't have any issues about adding tracks or what not.

I use Audacity to record stuff. Free program, but I got my bass sounding exactly like it does from the headphones on my amp. Just thinking that may be an issue, having 2 different locations to record stuff...
i use a program that i got emailed for free, called cool edit pro 2.0, its a $300 program. if you want it, i will try and email it to you on thursday.

EDIT: i can also get u fruity loops, hopefully you know what that is. :thumb:

i have gmail. it looks like im gonna have to invite you in, becuase you're gonna need more than 10 megs. and by the way with gmaill ur getting 2,668 megs. well at least for now, the amount gets bigger everyday. fruity loops is an wxtremely expensive program (the one im going to send you is bundled with most likely a $1000 worth of stuff) that has drum synths and instrument synths and vocal synths and just tons and tons of MIDI and so much playback availability. you can even adjust the sine wave. there is atutorial so i reccommend taking that when you get it. and i know ur gonna like how nice multi-tracking sounds with cool edit.:cool:

alright i guess the random partner thing is out..so we need an easy way to organize people into the genre or "style" they want to do. anyone have an idea to make this easier? i would type out some popular genres and have people pick the one they wanna do and then organize people that way, but i think it will get confusing because there's millions of genres and people will say "the genre i want is not on your list" etc..anyone have any ideas for this?

as far as length i'd say 1+ minutes..can have as many tracks as you want and as many effects as you want.

couple of ways you can do it. you can buy an adapter from radio shack that converts your 1/4" guitar cord jack to a 1/8" jack. then you can plug your bass direct into the line-in on your soundcard and record that way. or you can use the headphone output on your amp and play through that (but you'll also need the adapter to plug into your soundcard). you can also just use a mic connected to your PC. the sound quality won't be very good that way though.

From the sounds of it earlier, it was pretty much anything goes as long as it is at or under 2 minutes and contains you and your partner.

I don't know. It's not my comp. I don't even know if that's really it. There was some discussion about it a few pages back, I believe.

sorry i've been practicing with the new band a lot lately. um i dont think everyone is paired up yet. lemme go back through some pages and pair up the partners. as far as rules. i think we've established that drum tracks are allowed but nothing else other than bass and drums. no vocals or guitar. effects are fine as well. needs to be a minimum of 1 minute long and that's pretty much it.
