I don't know about you guys, but when I first started I had some different idols than I do today.
My first was Fieldy.:upset:
But since then I have moved on to Wooten, Claypool, Hamm, and what have you.

Like most people: Flea. I still he's an awesome bassist, though. I just know that there are tons of people better than him.
These days, I'm mostly influenced by Hamm, Manring (not that I could ever match his craziness), and Chris Wood.

Jeff Ament, Mingus, Paul Chambers Ray Manscerick and Timmy C

I was really influenced by Ryan Martinie(sp?)(Mudvayne), Les Claypool, and Cliff Burton in the beginning.
Now it's not so much Ryan anymore, but the other two are still a major part of why I practice, along with Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, Steve Harris and Geddy Lee.

None. I never started bass after hearing certain bassists play.
For the first few years of playing, I was actually under the impression Flea was pretty mediocre.

My first influence was claypool, because that was the first time I heard bass and thought the instrument had an awesome tone. I put off playing bass instead of guitar because I didnt think there was bass in rock, but good ol duff..

Roger Waters, then Billy Gould (FNM), YTimK and Flea. Now Justin Chancellor and Les Claypool are my main idols. I haven't been exposed to enough Vic/Jaco to get an opinion on them, but I know everyone treats them as gods. Stu Hamm is very good, but a little over the top. I prefer his fingerstyle stuff than his slapping.
sixner
11-29-2005, 09:35 AM
my first was Dirk Lance, his stuff still inspires me too...
I really wish i could find out what he's been up to...
P-nutt of 311 too.. and Flea... they were the biggest. and still are...
i look up to wooten, hamm, jaco... but i'd not like i do to Dirk. While those 3 are FANTASTIC, i just prefer to rock out on stage with some buddies, instead of all kinds of crazy technical stuff that would be really hard to do while jumping off a stack

No, she's not a crazy good bass player. But Bikini Kill was my first favorite favorite band when I was way young like 8. 'Course I didn't understand them, but I loved the music. To me, her basslines really stuck out. They're mostly just rooting, but I thought they were really well played. So being 9, I wanted to be just like her, so I gotta P-Bass juuuust like her.

Well...without doubt Steve Harris was my initial influence...but I haven't liked any Iron Maiden stuff for years so I've kind of gone off him. I used to enjoy playing along to Appetite for Destruction, it's more than the normal one note per bar type bass line...but without being too tricky :)

...fieldy.....WTF WAS I THINKING! I even bought a crappy low end 5 string Ibanez to play like him, that was a wasted venture considering i hated the thing sounded after a while because it has no agression in the tone and i was too used to playing a 4 string and i was transitioning into punk and i was like....wtf punk rockers don't use a B string! then i made a huge upgrade to AMA p-bass.
now i worship Chris #2.....and I now have a geddy lee bass....is there a pattern here.
And b4 that I has the AMA p-bass and mike dirnt was my fav player. o jesus i'm not just realizing this...i suck

my first bassist idol....
had to be....
Kelly Lemeux (?spelling?) from Goldfnger... i heard Stomping Ground (cd) and i was like "whoa!!! i want to play bass!!!"... though it was nothing special, i'm glad i was such an enthusistic little kid... cause it gave me somethiing to do... and acualy good at, haha.
but then, as played more i found Clff Burton, who got me out of the punk bass and into the metal bass playing... then i found Billy Sheehan... and i'm just amazed by his solos n' stuff... so yeah, thats it...
so...
First:
Kelly Lemeux
Now:
Cliff Burton
Billy Sheehan

To start off with my idols were Mike Dirnt, Steve Harris and Flea.
Nowadays I don't idolise anyone, there are just lots of bassist who I really respect their work. So now it is people like Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Michael Manring, Jean Baudin, Marcus Miller and Steve Bailey.
To BV, so true.

My initial inspiration to play bass came from my older brother. I saw him playing in his band with my other brother, and two of their friends, and I knew I wanted to play bass. The person who inspired me to take bass seriously, and do more than just root note and play with a pick, which I did for my first year of playing, was Stu Hamm.
Jack Bruce. My dad is a big Cream fan, and I just fell in love with what Jack could do with the bass.
I had to start playing bass.

my first bassist idol....
had to be....
Blly Sheehan

I really dislike when people say something like:
"Mark Hoppus made me want to play, but Victor Wooten had the greatest effect on my playing"
Id say Mark Hoppus had a bigger effect, since you know, he made you play in the first place...but thats just me.

Mike Dirnt for me as well. I dug the fact that his lines were easy enough for me to play yet he had fill too. At the time I thought the fills were amazing and I felt skilled being able to play them. He gave me confidence in my own playing back then.

my influences when writting bass lines how ever, dosent really exist. I Guess some RHCP, and BLS, but the olny big influence i have on writing is from the bass player in my schools jazz band.

Like most people Flea had an influence on me in getting me to start bass. But my real influence came from Stuart Zender and his stuff with Jamiroqaui, that was what get me practicing every day and because of him I've been playing solidly for 2 years just so I can be as good as him. So he is still a very big influence on me.
