hey everyone. i recently posted a thread about playing keyboard in my band. but what i need to know is what do you believe would be more beneficial in my band, or any rock band for that matter (btw, we play kind of punk/emo stuff). so the question i bestow upon you, my fellow mxers is: keyboard?...or bass? thanks all, and goodnight.

both
i respect any band who can have a good thing going then have a piano break down....*coughthursday*
i find playing keyboard is extremly difficult to include as a big part in a band. Excluding bands such as Children of Bodom. I personally would choose bass

I think bass, punk really needs te low driving force off the bass IMO

Bass really though if you come into a bass forum and ask if the bass is the right instrument for the job what do you think will happen

^ i figured it would happen, but the keyboard forum barely ever gets any replies, and i knew some people here played keyboard so they might not be as biased.

You might get biased opinions, since this IS, in fact, a bass forum. :p
Both can add to a band, but they add different things. You'd need to experiment and decide which best suits your music.

I have an idea.
Play keyboard at times, and bass at times. Kinda like what Matt does in MUSE (except hes guitar/keyboard, not bass).
Get an A/B box, and hook both the bass and they keyboard up to your amp, switch it to whichever youre gunna play, then switch if you wanna play the other.
I will agree with everyone else. Not much beats a good piano breakdown.

play both you silly fool.
Both have their uses, and both are different.
Keyboard fills up the sound a lot more.

both..just keep the keyboard on your right side when your playing and use your right hand to reach over and play it when it is needed

When I play keys I use a split voice, finger bass and grand piano. It works alright but I'd rather a setup similar to Ray Manzarek's, a keyboard for bass and a keyboard for his synth.

Become incredibly proficient at left hand tapping, then play bass using that and piano using your right.

I couldnt play piano without both my hands, it'd feel so awkward

Why not get a keyboard record some stuff on it and just trigger the bits that need playing on a sequencer while playing bass. Would be a bitch to perform live with but it can be done.

for punk id say deffinatley bass, keys can replace bass in lots of genres of music but punk requires dirty bass tone and driveing lines wich keys just cant provide.

i would just like to say in punk, the bass would be a beter choice than keyboard. a bass guitar will fill out ur sound in that kind of genre's enviroment better than a keyboard, and ur band's overall sound will be much fuller. just my 2 cents.
see, now because i said bass, everyone else will say keyboard.:thumb:
