How exactly would I tune my bass to D-A-D-G? I've never taken any formal lessons, so I don't know any technical stuff, so if it could be explained to me in depth but as simply as possible, that would be great.

play a 12th fret harmonic on your D string, then play your E string. Tune your E string lower until the E string is one octave higher

in standard tuning the 5th fret on the E is the same as open A. so, to tune to drop D just match the 7th fret on the E to open A since it's a full step down.

tune your bass to standard, then go to the 7th fret on the E string and tune it down until it sounds the same as the A string

A chromatic tuner would be great. Mine has made me sooo lazy. It's right on my amp, so I don't have to really do anything but plug it in & look at it. But yeh chromatic tuners rawwwwwk.

When I can't find my tuner and I feel like playing in Drop D I just listen to the intro of Cradle of Filth's, From The Cradle To Enslave.

I don't know how to tune it by ear, I just use a tuner...

But, I've heard that one way to do it, is press down on the 2nd fret on the E-string, then tune it down until it says it's tuned to E. Any truth to that?

Yes. If your E string is tuned down a full step to D, then the 2nd fret will be an E.
