He says it wasn't his, but I'm not sure if I believe him. His story sounds legitimate, but his past drug problems don't help convince me anything.
I hope he's still an analyst for ESPN. He was hilarious. :(
One question - how big of a problem are drugs in sports?
Irvin is a future Hall of Famer. Kids look up to Irvin. Drugs seem to be a problem in all sports (I don't hear much about drugs and hockey), but I personally think that the penalties for drug use should be re-thought, along with steroids. They're both illegal, and they're both wrong for idols to use/abuse (in my opinion).

Hopefully what he's telling the public is true, that he took it from his friends to prevent that kind of influence on his children. If that's so, he's very brave and honorable to do so.
Anyone who makes millions of dollars for anything should be a good citizen though. No drug user/addict should ever be a millionaire ever.

And yet we gladly buy records made by drug users.
I can't believe any pro athlete in this day and age would do drugs, especially given what happened to Len Bias. That should be the ultimate cautionary tale, not only to athletes but to everyone in general.

That really sucks. I really liked Irvin as an analysis. I just hope like you said that what he said was true.

He's lying, of course. And it's just a matter of time until the truth comes out. And what exactly is a "drug pipe". My guess is crack/meth pipe. Otherwise it's not really that serious. And crack pipes are usually glass. So breaking it would make more sense then tossing it in some dumpster. Even if not glass, you could simply toss it out the window on the highway. That would do the trick. He sounds like a kid telling a fib to his parents. Sad. He seems like a good guy. I say get him some help.
He forgot?
That seems like a big thing to forget.

hmmm...
He was still on Monday Night Countdown today...
So it couldn't have been all that serious...
IDK, he doesn't exactly seem like a crack-addict, but I guess these days you never know...

Supposedly he agreed to take a drug test. That would be a resolution. We'll see.

Most of us hope he's telling the truth, I'm not sure that any of us believe him.

Roids dont really help in hockey because its your ability to think more than in Football or baseball where its all power in hitting something. And Basketball's drugs dont exactly help the players if you know what i mean.

Well, I was talking more about drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, meth, etc. Not really steroids. Marijuana doesn't bother me too much when I hear of athletes using it. I'd rather not see it, but I don't think less of the person.
Steroids could help in hockey, though. Strength and stamina is a huge part of that sport. If you have no brains they might not help too much, unless you're the team fighter.

He was wrongfully accused of sexual assualt in 1996
Then he also had a hit on his life, he was messing with some stripper and her boyfriend or husband unknowingly paid an FBI informant to end Irvins life......

He has had load of trouble, but it appeared he had overcome it all.
Him and Deon Sanders were on one of those religious channels a few years back talking about how they were saved.

Didn't Michael Irvin used to smoke crack or meth or something? That makes this whole thing a bit more suspicious. That actually kind of ruins his credibility. I really hope he is telling the truth though. He is a very entertaining analyst, and seems like a decent enough guy, at least publicly.

Well I saw a report this evening that said it was a marijuana pipe and marijuana residue that was found. Why they didn't just say that in the first place on either side is beyond me. Doesn't seem like such a big deal afterall. Especially since Irvin no longer competes in professional sports. The way the authorities made it sound and the excuse Irvin gave for it initially, along with the coverage of the sports media, made it seem somewhat alarming. But now it just seems a case of no harm no foul, as they say.

on ESPN Irvin said it was a crackpipe....there is bit of a difference between a weed pipe and crack pipe

Saw more drugs in high school football than I did in pro hockey. Not alot of drug use at all...heavy drinking when we get a chance but don't all athletes party? Never met a smoker or pot or cigarrettes that played hockey other than myself, not a single one. 100% less than in other sports (coughNBAcough), mainly with pot, although there are some smokers left in baseball. Lots of guys who dip, however. I'd say as many as in baseball. As for performance enhancers, I've never seen anything other than protein powders and the like that you can get at GNC. All ephedra use stopped after that got banned and I've never seen a player on 'the cream' 'the clear' or any other sort of steroid. lots of food, and lots of time in the gym and the ice = alot of sleep. That's what they do. Eat, sleep, play, work out. Then the drinking, of course, but not on game nights.
As for 'recreational drugs,' the only one of note is cocaine used as an 'upper' by some older players, this is almost non exsistent in younger guys that I'm with. Also occasionally 'greenies' (mild amphetimines) are seen every once in awhile, and I certainly think I saw more of both in high school. Really not much drug use in hockey despite the WADA's baseless speculations.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me at all. Quite refreshing (other than the cocaine part).
It definitely sounds like you're a pro hockey player from that post, on which team are you playing?

I used to be...for like a month. I played juniors all over the place (most notably OHL's Plymouth Whalers for part of a season). I played a month (appearing in the preseason plus 2 regular season games) for the CHL's Austin IceBats before calling it a career at the ripe old age of 20. I broadcast now for the Chicago Steel in the USHL, so I've been around high level junior and pro hockey for about the last 5 years or so, including summer skates with alot of current AHL and NHL players. Obviously that would be the sport I could speak most knowledgably about with this topic but like I said, I played high school football too!!
Anyways, like I said, the coke thing is getting much better. A few NHL prospects died in the 90's (John Kordic and Bryan Fogerty, most notably) from substance abuse problems, and tough guy Bob Probert even spent a year in the can for it so it's really cleaning up. That and with the NFL's tough drug policies, I'd say those are the 2 cleanest sports...but I can't really speak knowingly about anything other than hockey, really, other than what I see on SportsCenter, but thats my 2 cents.
