Today I began the project of refinishing a drum. I only completed the first step so far: Removing the hardware. (btw, this drum is 13xNot sure, I'll check later, and it's part of a Rockwood 5 piece)
This only took me about 10 minutes, then I dusted it. But I'll be doing this over the course of a few weeks, since I'm in the process of moving. This is just the test drum. The one's I'll be doing for the actual kit wil be 12", 16", and 22" (no one likes 13" toms anyways :P) I'm thining sapphire blue, dark green, or orange. I'll let you MXers decide when the time comes. :D
Many pictures lie ahead.. (get it, ahead? like that crappy stixx?)
The entire shell, stripped of its poor excuse for hardware.

Meh, it'll do

I covered the flash so it wouldn't screw up the image completely.

I didnt need a gun or anything, I just pulled the wrap off a bit with a flat screwdriver and ripped it off took about 10 mins to do all 4. It was only glued at the seems, and the glue was weak.

That stain should look sweet on the drum. Never heard of that band but looks like you got them to sign the cover... sweet.

11-30-2005, 09:18 PM
Yeah, and that stain behind clear gloss is going to look even sweeter.

nice man, hopefully u only had to remove some minor glueing. i didnt know u could get stains in that color..oh man! i envy u! also that particular poly ur using will be great. incredibly shiny, though its a hard pick over the satin gloss
osiecki
12-01-2005, 03:12 PM
Whenever my dad gets home tonight, we're gonna put some of that gloss on the sample to see how it looks. Then this weekend, maybe Sunday, we're gonna do the drum.

take your time when your staining it. i remember i rushed straight into it when i started refinishing my spare 13" tom. got a big splodge of stain on part of it.
osiecki
12-01-2005, 09:02 PM
OK, so I added a coat of gloss to the sample board, and tomorrow I'll add another. If I like the way the stain looks under the gloss, I'll continue to the drum.
Pics tomorrow night. :D

that guide was great. i just didnt do the handrubbing of the polyurethane part..i was not confident id do it better than a brush..how wrong was i. also, i still havent gotten my hands on anything higher than 600grit paper x_x
osiecki
12-01-2005, 10:49 PM
Yeah, Combat, I started out with your guide, for wrap removal and sanding, but my dad has been leading me down the road as far as the staining part goes. He likes this stuff a lot, and he's been itchin' to try some staining methods, hehe..

12-02-2005, 03:07 PM
Yeah, I couldn't get all of the glue off, and in that one picture, the seam of the drum looks terrible. Poorly manufactured drums...
And yes, I'm going to sand the shells....why wouldn't I?
