Bad Idea?

I want some opinions on something I'm planning on trying.

I really want a 12" snare, but I don't really want to have to spend much money at all on one, seeing as I really need to upgrade my B8s.
So I am thinking about maybe refinishing a 12" tom and converting it into a snare.

The tom I'd use is a 12" x 10" Sonor 503. How would that sound? I know I might have some problems getting it positioned comfortable being as it's so deep, but would it sound like crap as a snare? I never really see any companies making snares deaper than 8", so I'm guessing there's a good reason for that.


What do you guys think?




Edit: Nevermind, I don't think it's really worth it. I'd rather save up for a good snare (Maryland 6.5" x 13" :D) than waste money on making a snare I probably won't even be happy with.

i've always been curious what it would sound like slapping a snare onto something such as a floor tom or something.

I say go for it. And when you're done, pics and audio :)

If you can find the rims for it then go for it. Might be hard to tune seeing as toms have less lugs. British boy managed it though

That's really deep, so you'll loose alot of sensitivity.

It will probably sound like crap.

I think I will try it, cause I kind of want to try refinishing a drum too, and this would be a good chance to.

Getting the hoops and parts is no problem, I know where I can get all the parts I need.

And if it really sounds so bad, I'll probably just re-sell the parts on eBay or something. So even then it wouldn't be so big a loss.


Another question though... if I go through with it, which set of wires would probably work better, 20 strand or 12 strand? :D

And can anyone post pictures of drums in natural finish with either gold or black hardware?

snapping snares onto a floor tom sounds pretty bad. Trust me i've tried it. Putting it on the thirteen and 12 " toms sounded ok though.

it's still going to be very deep.
you'll need 20st.+ wires to have any sensitivity... and it'll feel like pooh.
oh and if you tighten it down too much, say byebye to your lugs.

...but do try it! it might be cool.

dont forget you need to drill holes for the strainer and butt.
