Are you saying you can't hear bass? I use a 10" subwoofer on my pc and a 6" subwoofer in each speaker on my stereo, that helps alot.
As for figuring out actual songs, I usually just gauge the pitch of the note and fool around alot. Mostly just "higher or lower" kind of things.
Use your speaker EQ on your computer. Depending on what kind it is it should have one

Probably because your music has a bassline that roots the guitarists already baritone sound.

I usually reason that if I can't hear the bass in a song, than nor can anyone else, and it's safe to make up my own lines. Most people never notice.
A while back I agreed to back up a friend of mine at an open mike acoustic night - I took my acoustic bass guitar with me. He wanted to do 'Runaway', by Linkin Park. It's hardly my favourite song, but it was his set really, so I just shrugged and made up a new bass part. Nothing spectacular.
Afterwards people were coming up and saying "That was really good... you changed something... not sure what. Worked well though!"

The tone knob is just a boost/cut for treble.

is there a specific song you're trying to tab so maybe i can help? it's already been said, but if you can't hear the bass well then the bassist is just playing what the guitar is playing (root noting). when the bass plays something else you will almost always be able to hear it. it does take time though. what bands do you listen to? maybe listening to bands such as mudvayne, tool, rhcp, rush, black sabbath, cake, incubus etc will help you.
Personally, I enjoy kidnapping Santa Clause and making him tab out all my songs.

You should be able to pull the bass out of a song.some are harder than others, but you should be developing an ear for it. once you get started on that you will wish that you could actually hear a song as a song, instead of 4 or 5 different instruments*.
*In my opinion

That's one thing I wish I could do, enjoy music without being so analytical about it! :p I wish I could just listen to a song just for the song, but I always end up picking out every little thing.

Danger Will Robinson! Danger! Incorrect information!
A tone knob is a component of a passive tone circuit which only has the ability to cut frequencies. In no way shape or form can a tone knob boost ANYTHING.

Well, turning your tone knob all the way forward turns it off. At that point, all of your basses natural treble frequencies will come through. Rolling it backwards actually turns it on.
