BTBs play really well, but I would get another bass for the money. But that's just me. Go and play one and see how you like it. Remember, NEVER BUY A BASS YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED!!

BTB's are awesome... IMO better than the SR's... i really dislike the SR's..
Is there any difference in the 550MP and the 400QM? Other than the obvious wood finish?... i looked at both and didint really notice anything? unless i just over looked it..... If so they're roughly the same.. i'd say it's a great bass. i love the QM.. it might be my next bass... 6'er :thumb:

I think the BTB500 series has a mahogany back instead of basswood, but I'm not sure.

same here man, I read so many rave reviews on the btb405 I decided to just buy one online, since no stores near me had any in stock, and I must say I was dissapointed. Returned it after a week of playing it and trying to like it

Oh yes, cuz basswood and non-boutique electronics are soooo great and all.

SRs have the pussiest necks ever. They are so unstable and thin.
Basswood? Are you kidding me? I seriously doubt you could hear the difference in a bass made out of basswood versus ash or alder. That whole body woods thing has gotten blown out of proportion by botique companies.
The electronics sound fine to me.

Bull**** you can't tell the difference. I was playing an MIM Jazz the other day (my buddies, a white one, alder body), and then went on to play my MIM J with an ash body. The ash was brighter and had a lot more growl.
Unstable is a load too. The neck on my GSR still hasn't budge, and that's a POS compared to a decent ST series. The neck on my SR506 will never budge. Dual trussrods.

So if I played you a soundclip of a bass, you could tell me if it was basswood or not?
I can bend the sh*t out of SRs I see in shops (including my own GSR), but maybe because I'm burlier than you :thumb: .

I played a BTB405, not sure if this will help you on your decision at all, but anyway.
I found it to be very well balanced sound wise, could dial in many different tones with the EQ. The neck was big (which I liked) and the strings were widely spaced for a 5 string. I'm planning on getting it, but it's also used at my local guitar shop for $400. If the 550 is anything like the 405 and you have the cash I'd go for it.
