so i have been thinking lately about defretting one of my basses...its not so much a thought on how to defret but the reprocussion that could occur from slapping on it...
i know slapping on a fretless sometimes isn't the best thing as how is could affect the wood badly...but what if i were to leave the last fret on...would that help protect it acting like a slap plate...
thanks for your thoughts and inputs in advance...

Just defret the bass that slaps the worst.
My ibanez sounds great fingertyle, and tapping, but kind of lacks in the slap department. It sounds good I suppose, but I could do with a bit more lowend. so when I get my next sixer Im putting flats on the ibby
Dunno what the point of sharing that was...

If you have a hard neck wood like Walnut you could probably slap without any noticable damage for some time, but slapping on fretless doesn't sound quite the same at all.
Do you still have the GSR? If I remember correctly it has a pretty weak slap, atleast the one I played anyway. Defret it.

Leaving the last fret in is a BAD idea. You won't be able to sand the fingerboard properly, cuz you won't be able to get the entire length of it, and then, since fretless needs lower action, most likely you'll end up getting horrendous fretbuzz from the last fret.
I don't see why you really want to slap a fretless. But if you really, really want to, just polyurethane or epoxy the fingerboard.

yeah i have it...but im not gonna defret that one...im thinking about the jay turser...
its great for finger style, and has a decent slap tone to it, not as well at the ibanez tho...so i was most likely gonna defret that one...

...just polyurethane or epoxy the fingerboard.
but wouldn't you do that anyways to help protect the wood from regular wear and tear on the neck?

Why would you want to slap on a fretless, I know that it has been done but fretless basses are not really suited to that style. They're more at home in jazz.

Despite everyone else's naysaying, I enjoy slapping on my fretless, and I have a raw fretboard. If you have the means to create a slap plate, go ahead with it. You'd probably need a dremel-style router with a base or something comparable to route out the part of the fretboard where you'll inlay/screw/whatever the slap plate in. Personally, I haven't found slapping to be that detrimental to the board. A good Epoxy or Poly job would almost definitely keep that board safe for longer than you'll own the bass in all likelyhood.

^ I like slapping on fretless as well, but a lot of people think they can slap on a fretless and get the same slap tone as a fretted, except with more "mwah". WHich just isnt the case,

It's a totally different tone, since you're obviously not bouncing off of the metal. I'm curious as to how close to the fretted sound you could get with a slap plate, and I intend to investigate this at some point.
Either way, slapping on a fretless has a very cool tone to it.

When I defretted my bass I said I wasn't going to slap on it but the mwah...

I held off slapping on mine for a damn long time, and then I slapped on it and it was glorious. Lately I've been using my fretless as my main bass, so it's seeing more and more slapping.
Well, lately it's been at my drummer's house... :upset:

Leaving the last fret in would not work. Any note you played anywhere near it would just rattle, or worse, play as if you'd fretted that note.
What *would* be interesting is grinding the last fret down, so you effectively have a strip of metal running level with the fretboard...

thats something to think about...but in a way, what would that really accomplish if it's flesh with the rest of the fretboard...

It would mean the strings couldn't eat far into the wood.

i see...well what if you were to do that for all of the frets then...

It'd be a lot of work... But I do wonder how it would sound. I imagine it'd be a little more trebly than a regular fretless. I don't think it's ever been done. I don't know whether that's because it wouldn't work, or no-one's ever bothered to try!

I recently bought a fretless and said I wasn't going to slap on it. 2 days later, I'm slapping away.
