Not really much to say. Despite all the things he did, abusing his transplant by carrying on drinking, the guy was still a legend.
RIP George

He brought it on himself.
Still sad to see such a legend go though.

I have no sympathy for alcoholics, but he was an amazing player.
It's sad to see him go.

It's a shame but it is kinda his fault. He knew he had to stop drinking.

Yeah, it was his own fault but still he was a football legend

Yeah I read the thread about him likely not making it through the night last night. I actually had never heard of him before that.... Probably because I'm Canadian and don't really pay attention to soccer
From the ignorant people of MX,
George Best?George Best (born May 22, 1946 in Belfast) is a former footballer from Northern Ireland. He played for Manchester United F.C. between 1963 and 1974, where he won two League championships in 1965 and 1967, and one European Cup in 1968, the year he was named European Footballer of the Year and Football Writers' Association Player of the Year.
He had real trouble with alcoholism, and got a liver transplant some years ago.

When I first saw this thread, I thought the title was 'George Bush is dead' and it was a joke spam thread; I'd already gotten into the mod login to do my first banning in quite a while...

Nope, he was on the way out ever since he had kidney failure and internal bleeding weeks ago.
He did it to himself, and I think its wrong that Best is such a "Sad story" etc, whle most Alcholics are labeled Rummys and burdens to society, but all the same. RIP.

My thoughts go out to his family.

These were my thoughts. I mean it's sad really because he was such a great player, but he had no value for his own life.
oh yeah and 24hr drinking started yesterday in the UK

This is one of the stupidist decisions the government have ever made. The amount of health problems, abuse, vandalism, ect ect is just going to rocket. There isn't near enough police around to protect people and take care of drunken trouble causers. It's just ridiculous.
Fill me in on this 24 hour drinking thing.

Basically a new law has been passed in the past couple of days, that allows all pubs and clubs are allowed to sell alcohol 24 hours a day.

Well exactly. The only people not thinking it's stupid are; pub/club owners, alcoholics, 13 year olds who now have more chance of getting served, and people who have nothing better to do than constantly waste all their money getting drunk.

The government knows its going to get out of Control, and that they wont b able to handle it. Then they are going to tell us that we need more surveillance, and us, being scared by the raging drink problem of England, will allow it, giving the Government a stronger grip on our lives.
And yet, the UK, outlawed smoking in public.

It should also stop/reduce the number of big fights that always seem to happen at closing time. too many drunk irritable people hitting the street at the same time.

RIP Best. A great loss of a true legend.
And regarding the 24hr drinking law: It won't make that much of a difference in the long run. At first, sure, people will go mental and drink too much for too long. However, there are a few points which haven't been made, which should be considered:
1. People only have so much money to spend on booze
2. Not all pubs and clubs will sell drink round the clock all the time - in fact, a lot are sticking to current opening hours, and most will just use the extended license as they see fit.
3. The reason why people mess themselves up on drink is because they know they have only a certain amount of time to get drunk, so they rush it. Knowing that when the place they're in closes, there's somewhere else to go, will cause people to drink at a more steady rate, thus less problems.
Oops, very off-topic there.

You can't blame someone for being an alcoholic. It's just like being addicted to any other form of drug. True to a certain degree he brought it on himself but completly putting him at fault is unfair.
Although I'm not happy about Question Of Sport being cancelled to reshow some program about Best.
