What are some good ride cymbals that can also be used as crashes? Or is it a bad idea to use rides as crashes and should I just get medium crashes?
I like to dig into my ride cymbal and crash it once in a while but I dont use it as a crash. The Zildjian A Custom series does work well for that though.

I love crashing on my ride, but it wouldn't be suitable as the sole crash.

seriously, dont use regular rides as a crash cymbal, but get a crash/ride as drum phil said. I every once in a while for a cool effect hit my ride pretty hard, but not like my crashes. You can ruin your ride by hitting it so hard.

You'd want a thinner ride for that sort of thing. Anything really heavy will
A. Be impossible to get a full crash out of
or B. Deafen everybody in a 5 mile radius

If i could crash my ride, I would. The one I remember the best is the ride Josh Eppard uses, he uses it as a crash all the time and he has it on the stand wicked tight so it barely moves. Sounds awesome none the less(he looks like he will break it he hits so hard) i recall it being a 21" HH dry bell I believe, correct me if i'm wrong.

I read the article of him in modern drummer, the cymbal on his right side near the floor tom is actually a 20" crash, and his ride is on the left side near his hi hat.

yeah, he plays open handed and his ride is right above his hats so he just switches his left hand up from the hats to ride real quick....then he has a 20" crash where a lot of people put their rides

My old Paiste 302 was quite good as a crash. Odd really because it sucked as a ride.

It's kind of funny. I've notcied that lower end cymbals are usually better at being a different cymbal to the one they're supposed to be. Like Sabian Solars - the crash is trashier than the china, and the china sounds more like a crash.

AAX Stage Ride
yeah, I'm already getting one of those for my birthday next week on the 30th. 20" with brilliant finish. That cymbal is awesome. Would the 21" version work as a good crash too? Cause I after I upgrade the rest of my cymbals I could have the 20" and 21" as crashes and get some 22" inch ride that is very dry. Or would the pitch would be too low for them to be primary crashes?
Im not a hard hitter or anything. I just like the sound of rides that work good as crashes cause normally they have a longer sustain than medium crashes. I don't think Sabian makes any heavier crashes than medium.

Yes yes I know all that, but he uses his ride as a straight out crash too, is the ride a dry bell though was my question.

many ppl in the past have used ride cymbals as crashes, myself included.
the most notable ride cymbal that is excellent as a crash is the Paiste 2002 ride cymbals in 18" and 20" sizes. IMO ~ one of the best crash sounds ever!
i keep tryin to buy some but i keep getting outbid :(
