Do you physically write out your basslines on paper and go back and make changes etc?

or

Do you just memorize everything and not write down anything?

Depends. Something I remember for years, but sometimes there are lines that I don't want to forget, I'll write it down. But my basslines are always changing, either way.

i tend to make them up. and I never feel the same way twice, so i never play the same bassline

I don't think I've ever written one of my basslines down. I don't even play them exactly the same each time (in a band setting ... for my solo pieces I usuially do).

i generally just.. memorize. with in my band, i just hope i can remember what i was playing and what not... might change a little bit, but once i hear everything else playing, i jump right it...

solo piece's around the house.. i'l write em down if its something i really want to remember...

Memorize, the only thing that I would write down are solo's. My band doesn't let me do solos. Im quiting my band screw them.

Most people say that memorizing the lines and solos is a lot more beneficial to your playing. I support this idea. It takes a lot longer sometimes but you will be able to incorporate those licks into your own playing much easier.

edit:: my bad I did not realize it was about your own bass lines... either way i memorize both :p

I usually improvise alot, so neither are really needed. However, I do have to remember the basic structure of the bassline, so I'd say I memorize that.

Memorize.

if im just messing around by myself and icome up with something good ill usually quickly write it down, since im likely to forget... if i come up with other parts etc and it becomes a song ill usually memorise it and show it to the band.

both...

if its just root notes and basic stuff then i dont bother writing anything down, if it is complex stuff, like arpeggios and solos then i will write it down just for reference and edits

I cant really write music or time signatures and stuff, so i just remember it.... well i remember the general flow of it and just play around the same frets (there frets because i dont know what notes they are >.<)

I usually write or record it, my memory is horrible. I will forget talking to people during the day and forget whole conversations, discover I've already told someone something, forget, and try and tell them again later.

I usually memorize them, but if there`s many similar songs that can get confused with eachother, I write the roots down.

I usually videotape my stuff with my digital camera... I think this is good not only to memorize your own things but to analyze your technique and to check how you would look playing bass in front of someone else...
So now I have like 800 MB of videos of myself playing bass... Should share them on DC++ or something and rename them to p0rn.

The lines for my band I remember because I dont want to be all fancy and try to improvise a 20 song setlist and make everyone else look bad.

In church i get to improvise over different chord sheets evertime and never get to really sit down with one song.

I do both

Sometimes i think of a nice bass line, but do not take/have the time to play around with it. So i write it down, lest i forget it.
After that, i memorise it. However, i do update any changes i make to it, so as to give my guitarists a visual reference of what i play.

Usually, I memorise. Occasionally if for some reason I doubt I'll remember it, I record a quick rough version of it.

Bitchwax

I usually memorize, because when I try to write a line down, I get lazy and don't do half of it, so then I only have half a piece. When I just memorize I usually remember it a lot better than I would've if it were memorized, and I come up with better little parts that make it sound better when I play from memory.

Memorize all the way.

Sade

Yeah, I record nearly everything I do, that I like. Other than that, rarely do I write them out.

Klander Brigade

Usually record on comp and maybe write up a quick tab for them. If I try to remember, I forget.

DashRantic

Usually memorize, on occasion I'll record a short clip of a riff so I don't forget it.

Pinhead13

writing them isn't much of a help because my mom is always looking for things to throw away. I had a bunch of pages with basslines written but she threw them away thinking that it was phone numbers :upset: .

Sometimes I'll take the time to write it into Guitar Pro, and try to build a song from there.

When I write with my band I jsut memorize.

I've been starting to write them down on sheet music, with rough rhythms. And I find if I write it down in sheet music I memorize by default :p
