I got bored, so I'm making my band play a song in 5/4. I can get the timing ok, but im still a little shakey.

On top of that I have to sing. I was thinking maybe just doing a different right handed fingering:

Index Middle Ring Index Middle

Do you guys have any ideas on how i can get a decent bassline and be able to sing to this?

I'd definately have a simple-ish bass line that coincides rhythmically with the vocals.

dont think of fingerings unless you are going to play straight quarter notes, and if you are going to play straight quarter notes why not just play one finger to make it easier so you can conentrate on singing

listen to "Outshined" by Soundgarden for a start, it is 5/4 i think. I programmed it in my drum machine as 5/4 and it worked out well.



EDIT: Now that I think of it, it may be 7/8:angry:

it's frightening, because my hall is really into the beatles and stuff, which is cool, but i play all my music through my bass amp, which is loud, and then they get really pissed at me for listening to metal and screamo and threaten to eat my liver, which is bad.

if i play with just one finger, i automatically think 4/4, so i wont get the chord changes

I don't understand why what fingers you play with corresponds at all to what time signature your song is. I mean, just count, and it should be fine, right?

the liver is quite vital to living a good life.

That's probably the LAST thing you want to do (the fingering that is). What you really want to do is let finger-picking become second nature. You should really be counting in your head or tapping your feet. You need to feel the beat and not rely on your fingers all the time to keep it.

Sit down with a metronome if you have one that you can set to 5 beat cycles. Otherwise, when you're bored or sitting near a table, tap quarter notes with all five fingers of your right hand and get that feel in your head. If you can feel it in your head, then you won't even need to count anymore just like you don't need to always count 4/4 since your body is able to naturally feel the beat.

Once you have all this down, then singing will be easy to focus on and you wont have to keep thinking about what finger you're going to use.

If it helps count it differently in your head. Instead of 1,2,3,4,5. 1,2,3,4,5; Try, 1,2,3,1,2,. 1,2,3,1,2? :thumb:
