why is it that all the basses that are out at guitar center sound all bright and twangy like theyve just replaced their strings? I can never really pick up a bass there and see if i like the tone of it or anything like that because of that.

I know.
It's the amps.
They're always either SWR or Ampeg.
I actually got really mad one day 'cause I picked up a bass exactly like mine & it sounded so much better.
But it's the amps. They know how to get people to buy a bass.

maybe because they're new??
ShetaN bRaT

Yes, they are new. But so is your own bass when you first buy it.
Not to mention yours hasn't been defilled by random grubby bass players.

The People that work there have to change the strings alot and they only use a certain type of string. I think for basses they use Ernie Balls.

why is it that all the basses are fender ibanez or schecter?

Not for every bass. Schecter always has Elixirs on them ...
Same with the higher end Ibanezs.

Hah, I've seen quite a variety at GC. Warwick, Spector, Music Man & whatever you demand.
I don't mean to be posting so rabidly in this thread, but my dad works at GC & I'm always there.

if you want to find out what a bass will sound like through a crap then request to play it through a crap amp, they cant just say "no we only let people use the realy good amps"
ShetaN bRaT
11-24-2005, 05:10 PM
Well, in the bass room, there's usually atleast one crap amp. Just plug the bass into that. I just always end up with an SWR or an Ampeg 'cause well. That's where the chairs are.

I always play through the crate to see how good the bass can sound.

thats a good idea. its too bad that my local shop only has ampeg and crate. crate sucks and ampeg is too expensive.

So I asked my dad, I was like ... dad. Why do the basses always sound better at Guitar Center ? & he said they don't.
But ... they do.

That's why you always have to try and play through and amp similar to your own, so you'll know what the bass sounds like on your own rig.

not at mine?... true, 1 wall is ampeg, 1 wall is SWR... but they have a whole other wall that is GK stuff.. they put it a big modeling station for GK now.. featering a backline 250, and RB400, 700, and 1001 you can choose backline 1x15, 4x10 or 2x10... they dont have any other cabs YET... i talked to a guy, said they're getting more.. *hoping for a Neo series*
but the center of it al is all the used year.. quiet often som sweet stuff? Peavey, Eden, ive seen a trace elliot once or twice... they also have a line of Behringer leading into the room...
as far as basses go... Ibanez, Schecter, Spector, musicman, Fender, Warwick, OLP, few ESP's + a giant wall before you go into the bass room of used stuff... including! 1 $3,000 (i believe its something like that) Sukop fretless bass...... i had an orgasm on it..
several times

Well I only go to one Guiatr Center on a regular basis. The Hollywood store has everything you will ever want to play ever in you're whole life, ever. But it's like an hour away so whateeeev.

well... guitar center is a 45 minute drive (Depending on traffic) on the other side of the city... which requires driving through downtown (hence traffic)... that's pretty much the only decent store, other than a Music go round about 1/2 hour away... but, next to GC is a Sam Ash :thumb:

yeah i never liked it before... customer service = CRAP
but they recently remodled the one near me... they've got a nicer selection than before.. now they've got real warwicks rather than rock basses, ibanez acoustic's, + some better yamaha's

I actually liked the sound of a little crate 1x12 combo I played.
The basses sound like that because the strings are new. I dont really like the sound either.

that and most of em wipe down and clean things voraciously. ive had people (both at GC and local shops) chase me around with a wipe cloth, cleaning every instrument i decided to wank on.

Ironically enough, the GC here (about 20 miles from Atlantic City) has no ESPs whatsoever as far as I know. No idea why.

Once i was at GC for 6 hours in about a 3 day span...ordering and buying amps for me and going with my friends to get tehre amps.
I was very sick of it after that. I'm not sure if ive been back, actually.

why? the one around me has the best stuff. they have a huge selection on high-end fender, schecter, spector, traben, tons of ampeg, swr, ashdown, kustom, and gk, and loads and loads of used stuff. lots of used eden cabs. lots of used and new peavey stuff. they're bass pedal selection covers a wall and the guys are realy upfront about whats crappy and what isnt....

The Sam Ash near me seems to have more types of instruments like saxophones and cellos etc. , but the guitar center has the best quality and selection of basses and guitars. However, Sam Ash does have some nice uprites =)

Well at mine, the selection is alright, the amps and accessories are great. But the employees are such douchebags. you play a bass, and they just eye you and make you feel uncomfortable. at guitarcenter an employee would walk by and be like "HEY MAN, SOUNDS GOOD!" Even though it sounds like they're trying a bit to hard to sell you somehing, they're nice. At sam ash if you need help reaching a bass, the guys are like "are you sure you can play well enough to use this guitar?" then they just look at you the whole timei you're playing it, thinking that you're going to drop it and break it or something.
