Sorry I haven't done one in a while, like I said in a couple other thread I have been super busy. But now I will present to you the long awaited Sonata Arctica. ug...I have to compete with genuine's Sonata write-up :amaze:. Oh and a couple days ago I did a progrssion of metal and how it's progressed over the years but sadly it died quick. Lets get started. The first album we will look at is "Ecliptica" and the song is...
Letter to Dana
Dana, my darling, I'm writing to you.
'Cause your father passed away, it was a beautiful day
And I don't want to bother You anymore,
I used to hope you'd come back
But not anymore Dana.
My eyes might have betrayed me, but I have seen
Your picture on the cover of a filthy magazine
And I think my heart just cannot handle that
Dana, my darling, would be so bad.
Heh, not what I expected. Before you judge I doubt when he says I saw your face on a dirty magazine cover he actually is talking about p0rnography. It most likely is a metaphor for humiliation or something of that sort. If you read it over the lyrics are actually quite nice. Different then most bands and these actually tell a story within the song, rather then many other metal bands. But outside of the metaphors the song still does tell a story. He is obviousley writing to someone he has greived for and no longer has the emotion to love her anymore. That was kind of funny when I looked onto the lyrics and saw the dirty magazine part. Onto the next. This song is off the same album but is entitled...
Picturing the past
In a house where no one never sleeps,
lays a man who sees more with his eyes
Picturing the past before him,
in a bed, alone, with clothes on
Paying for service he doesn't really need
With his eyes, he sees more love and lust
more tears, far too much to handle
Can't tell a soul, not this time, they'd lock him right up
Too much of burning bushes too much for his weak soul
In his mind, oh so jaded, he's gone too far behind
Of all the visions seen, this one makes him scream
Powerfull Eh? though it may not be to clear, the lyrics are beating around the bush towards the lines of insanity. The man in this song is revewing his past and realizing he is going insane or is. The "man" in this poem is a metaphor for your inner feelings or stuff so deap in your soul that you cannot admit it. "More tears, far to much to handle" that line speaks far through this song. You could almost explain the whole song just using those seven words. Now we will look onto another album it is called "Successor" and the song is entitled...
Fullmoon Sitting on a corner all alone,
staring from the bottom of his soul,
watching the night come in from the window
It'll all collapse tonight, the fullmoon is here again
In sickness and in health, understanding so demanding
It has no name, there's one for every season
Makes him insane to know
Running away from it all
"I'll be safe in the cornfields", he thinks Hunted by his own,
again he feels the moon rising on the sky...
Great lyrics. This story kind of resembles a haunting fear of this moon reaching this guy. This moon is acting as this symbol of death chasing him. As I stated in my last poetry speaks thread, symblosim is very common in music and in poetry. That's how many of these songs are created and how these little storys can paint a wonderfull picture for your mind. Like in this song, you can just picture the moon chasing this man wanting to capture him, and this man is hiding from it all. Now we will look onto the same album but a different song. The song is called...
San Sebastian
I could see my life, short film passing my eyes
I tried to look away from her, as always I just tried
Sweetness in her eyes, gone thru one million miles
How could I turn my back on her, the sweetest thing alive
I was eager, day time dreamer, waiting time when I'd come alive
Sun of San Sebastian eighteen years young today
She's all I ever dreamed, but now my skies are turning gray
It was good I got to know her well, because it made me see
That the sun of San Sebastian is just too hot for me
Look what I have done to my San Sebastian
I wasted all my childhood dreams by staring at sun
Ok, San sebastian is A city an northern Spain on the Bay of Biscay near the French border east of Bilbao. It's a resort and has fishing and chemical industries. But these lyrics also tell a great story. Looking through most of their songs, they tell a lot of storys talking about love and women, that's where all these great describing words. IMO that's what really makes this song, they have described this place such as paradise, and he lost his first love their and gained the greif of the san sebastian sun.
