View Full Version : Dang Blisters

So I'm back home for Thanksgiving weekend, and my plan was to spend a LOT of time playing my bass (as I haven't much lately). Unfortunately, after playing all day yesterday and a couple hours today ... I got a blister on my middle plucking finger. In over 5 years of bassing ... this is the first time I've ever gotten a blister from it.

So I really want to play my bass all weekend ... is there a quick remedy to healing them/covering them up without hindering my playing ablility?

I pop em with a needles. just a small poke on a side that doesnt touch the strings. drain it and cleanse it. that makes them heal quicker, ive found. itll still be sensitive, but easier to play with.

Hmm ... the problem is that the blister came from repeated popping the strings, and the blister is at the EXACT place where my finger comes in contact with the string :(

well just pop the hole farthest away and drain. that what i meant. ittl take tim, theres no escaping that, but i found this way speeds it up.

pop with your index.

Well, the reason I was popping with my middle finger is because I could feel a blister about to start of my index finger. I usually use both.

-Pop it/drain it like ep said
-Use hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria
-Worse comes to worst, peel off the skin and slap (no pun intended) some superglue in there (nontoxic, of course)

I doubt that will make the healing process go any faster.....I've always heard that leaving the blisters alone is the best thing you can do.

That depends. Popping blisters makes them go away faster, but is generally dangerous business unless you use a sterilized needle and bacteria killing solutions, then put a bandaid on it. Leaving them there is safer, but lasts longer.

I personally get lots of blisters, generally during shows.

that reminds me of a thing that happened to a friend of mine's dad....he got drunk home and took off his contact lenses and went to apply lubricant to them, just to realize he had put superglue inot his eyes....

the guy was blind for almost three months...

I recommend patience, let it heal and harden, might suck for a while but it'll be worth it in the long run. If you're really desperate though you could go with the superglue, I think they used it in 'nam to stick people back together (minor lacerations only of course).

On a side note, Vietnam is a highly lovely place and I recommend visiting it.

i used to do that alot when playing, drums that is...its a quick fix, but there are suppossed medical backfires from that...so i am not sure if that is something that you would want to do...

anyways, just pop it, clean all the puss out...and then cover it with something...the two best things that come to mind is either a bandaid...not the kind that is like rubber, but the clothe type...i'd say this type because it the rubberish produces a different sound and the clothe is more similar to your skin...

or there is something called "mole skin" or something like that they used for patients mainly who have to stay in bed to cover up body sores...that acts like a second layer of skin...

^ A bandaid will get torn to shreds by the gruff bass strings...even if they were flatwounds, the constant force/friction of your fingers popping/plucking the strings would grind the bandaid down, keep moving it, or just prevent a good performance...

Well. I decided just to teach myself to pop solely with my ring finger.

...an hour later, I now am the owner of THREE blistered fingers :(

I guess I'm just going to have to cover them with bandaids and play through the pain.

or you could pop w/ your pinky.

:amaze:
11-24-2005, 06:39 PM
...that's my only finger left to pop with :( ... but since I've never done it before, it would also be the fastest to get a blister on.

I think it would be worth it, plus its not that hard.

Maybe your just popping too hard, cause i dont see how you could get blisters that quickly.

I'm popping the same as I have been for about 5 years ... I think the reason I'm getting them now is because I've barely been playing for the last few weeks (making fingers soften up), and have been playing for hours on end for the last couple days. And the piece that I'm working on is mostly slap/pop ...

Probably... wouldnt duct tape hurt like hell when you took it off? Especially with the whole blister thing.

It's probably just tear off the dead skin with it ... which is bound to happen anyways./

I used duct tape when I cut my hand at work last summer, and it was as good as new.

It takes the oxygen out of every cells it touches.

It also causes scares when they might not happen.

If you are going to use hydrogen peroxide, just flush the wound with it, and wash it away with water.
