What are the differences between these? Which do you prefer and why?

I was under the impression that CIJ were of higher quality than the MIM, but I know a guy who disagrees.

The CIJs I've played certainly were of higher quality than the MIMs I played

I've heard GREAT things about CIJ, but I've never played one. MIMs ... I own one and love it, but there is definately room for improvement (long term plans of upgrading bridge, pickups, etc.)

Couldn't have said it better myself. :D

If you buy a MIM, it's great as it, but you can mod it and make it amazing...specifically you can get new pickups, a new bridge, and, if you want, a new neck. The neck on MIM's are good, but if you want a graphite reinforced neck, go MIA. I don't know if CIJ does those, though...

But yeah, MIM's are great, but I've heard CIJ's are better.

I've heard the MIM's have some pickup hum, although I played one and didn't really notice it.

^ Yeah, it does, but it's nothing major. If it bothers you that much, do what I did: replace the stock PUPs with some DiMarzio Ultra Jazz PUPs...they're hum cancelling, as I think most replacement PUPs are.

It's not that the stock PUPs are bad, I just decided to beef up my bass' tone a bit. :D

What exactly is so much better about the CIJ?

Deacy

Better wood (probably), nicer feeling neck, US Vintage pickups and hardware, slightly more variety

Where's HeavyBassDude when you need him? :p

I think CIJ are just made with overall better quality, but I'm not 100% sure. Decay may be right, but I honestly have no idea. I just know that CIJ is a step above MIM.

feel of an mia, but not the sound. Take the mia and mim sound, find the middle, and there you have the mij.
I would post a soundclip of mine, but it has been modded.

I love the Geddy and Marcus Miller signatures but the necks on all the other fenders rubbed the wrong way. I do love the tone, however.

Not necessarily. I have been wanting the Geddy Lee sig jazz bass which costs around $699 new and as much as $600 used. They are CIJ. I picked up a 98 MIA jazz for less than that on ebay last week! If you keep an eye out you can get a MIM jass for around $250 used.

What I have always been told about the CIJ instruments is that the Japanese do an outstanding job of copying detail and craftsmenship from previously made instruments. That is why Fender reissues and basses like the Geddy Lee (which is basically a '72 reissue) are made in Japan

They were labelled Made in Japan until 1998 or something.

What is the difference in tone quality and versatility?

Deacy
11-25-2005, 02:42 PM
I wouldn't say a CIJ was more versatile than a MIM, but certainly more vintage sounding.
MIAs would definitely be more versatile with the S1 switch.
I'd say CIJs are the alternative to spending twice the price for an American Vintage Fender.
