View Full Version : A few pics of the DW pop-corn snare I bought today!

I bought a DW pop-corn snare today, practically on a whim. I was in the drum shop when I noticed the drum and realized how close it would fit my kit. I have been waiting on a drum I was buying from OsirisX but thats not happening.

The deal was too good to pass up so I brought it home. One cool thing about being in tight with the store owner is he let me bring home a bunch of ways to attach it to my kit. I ended up with a cymbal boom arm coming off the rack suspending the drum. I put 2 Gibraltar memory locks on it and it is rock solid.

The drum is solid maple and has a GREAT pop to it! This little thing kicks it! Check out the pics.....

I bought this snare to use with my main band. We are planning to record some demo's this weekend and the new drum will be used in it. I'll post some snippits of our new material, if I am allowed (legal issues), this weekend. I think I can post up 15 or 20 second snippits.

The snare is 10X6, it is made of RockWood maple, 12 ply I believe. I put a Evans G1 coated head on it and ordered some Puresound snare wires for it. I played a few hours ago before I left for work and am just totally impressed with how much crack this little snare has. It is also a very dynamic snare and responds well with ghost noting.

I installed a tom mount on the drum so I could attach it straight to the rack and suspend it. On my other Sonor kit I'll just use a regular snare stand with it.

Now I have to buy an SKB case for it, a Shure Beta 98DS mic for it, and I ordered a Evans Hazy reso head as well.

I absolutely LOVE the snare throw off on the DW snares. It blows the Sonor throw off's out of the water. The one complaint I have had with the Sonor Delite snares is the throw off; they are junk.

Now all I need is my HandSonic, and a Sonor HLD590 20 lug Bell Bronze 14X8 snare and my kit will be complete!

ken, as always, thats amazing. fits your kit perfectally.

do have like a tab or something at this store? or just really lucky.

SonorKen
11-24-2005, 08:20 AM
I help the guy out at the store alot. When he puts on drum shows I help him with clinics and help him teach new drummers how to tune, put their kits together, and generally help him out. In return he takes REALLY good care of my when I buy gear.

He will give me Evans heads and Vic Firth sticks free, the problem with the Firths is they tend to fracture fairly often on me. Ive changed over to Vater Extreme 5BN's and the problem is solved.

Developing a relationship with your local drum store is valuable. If Im at a show and break something, and it's a local show, he is available to meet me at the shop to get replacement parts. I usually carry a ton of replacement gear (heads, reso heads, kick beaters, nylon washers, felt disks, etc...) with me tho.

I think spending a million dollars on a drumkit is too much.

We've got to be realistic, when you're spending that much money on a kit you've gotta think of ways it could be better spent. For instance, if you're loaded you could use your cash to help others rather than increase the size of your.. umm.. kit.

Funny you mention that. I'm not "a believer" most of the time, but stuff like this can get pretty freaky doesn't it?

You have been wanting a great popcorn snare for like MONTHS now, then you walk into the drumshop and as if it was a gift of heaven... there it is, waiting for you AND your kit

Just like when I bought my rockstars. I was toying with the idea of new drums for like a year. Then finnaly took the decision to go order some export selects. What I had in mind (4tom, bass, snare) would have cost me 1500$ new. I enter the drumshop, and there it is: a second hand 7 piece rockstar DX with rack and hardware for only 750$... in my favorite color.
They set the kit up 30min before I entered the store man
As if they knew I was gonna show up to buy a kit.

Yea, I was kinda blown away when I saw the drum. It was one of those instant things that I knew I was going to do. Im glad I bought the drum. I have pop-corn snare sounds in my electronics but the electronics don't allow you the dynamics you can get with an actual snare.

To each his own. I didn't buy this kit all at once, it grew into this. I didn't put this kit together to play in my home studio with, its designed to be used on the road in a worldwide tour and to record in professional studios. This kit is a tool, thats all, it allows me an unlimited multitude of voices to create and compose the musical ideas in my head.

hey ken, that looks really nice.

uh if its not too much trouble could you please get up a pic of your 14 in, i just want to see how thats position, im thikning of getting the same tom sizes and was having trouble with the hegit of everything. so yeah, please.
Are you wanting a picture of the snare in relation to the toms? And if so do you want a drivers seat or a shot from the front?

I'm curious Ken, although it might not be possible at this point, how much money have you invested into your setup? A rough guess will suffice if you can't do any better(or just don't want too. Damo you know we are all anxiously awaiting your kit as well ;) That thing should give Ken's a run for his money
Damo's shells are FAR FAR FAR more expensive than mine. Damo's shells are going to totally blow the sound of my kit away. People who hear my shells always say that they sound live like a kit that you hear in a studio. All of the high toms sing perfectly and the low toms have an amazing amount of growl to them. As good as my shells sound, Damo's are going to blow them away.

So, you have to factor that in when you talk about the price and comparison off high end Sonor kits. I have more shells with a killer sound where Damo will have less shells with possibly the most perfect drum tone on earth. I have somewhere in the ballpark of 25k in this kit. That figure includes EVERYTHING from mics to cases to cables for the drums to cases for the effect units. My kit is road ready to tour with.

Damn man, you have ALOT of equipment. What do you think of the DW 9000 pedals, how do they compare to Iron Cobras and Eliminators? I was thinking about picking 2 of them up for my double bass kit that I'm getting soon.
I OWN a set of Iron Cobra's AND Eliminators. I play them both frequently. I have the Iron Cobras on my other Sonor kit and the Eliminators on my Gretsch kit. The DW's blow both pedals out of the water. When I spend alot of time on the IC's and the Elim's and then play the DW's I am amazed at how much more fluid the DW pedals are. One of the songs we are composing has a drum track where I play alternating triplets on each foot. I always kinda stuggle with my less dominate foot on the other pedals to pull this off. When I play my DW's it seems quite a bit easier.

The Axis pedals are REALLY nice as well. I have been playing on some of those as of recent and they perform really similiar to the DW's. In some ways I think the Axis pedals are better than the DW's and in other ways the DW pedals are better than the Axis pedals. If you are playing speed metal with alot of constant double kick, I would buy the axis pedals. If you are playing "intellectual progressive", where you need alot of footboard return and the ability to be super dynamic with the pedals AND want the pedals to be versatile enough to totally wail on them and then be really dynamic, go with the DW's.

I would only want a couple kits if I were some famous drummer. Having one you don't play seems a waste... (Unless it is VERY sentimental...) But that's what we all say when we don't have all the money in the world...

I have audio which I have passed around to some of the guys. My "real" band is getting close to making our official debut which will be video'd. I'll put up links to the video as soon as its done. It should be a cool video, were having a pro-audio company do it at a live show and they plan to use multiple camera men.

The snare cost about 200 bucks.
