Nile, as many of you may know, is a death metal band. They formed in 1993 in South Carolina, and are still together today. The music and lyrics are greatly influenced by Ancient Egyptian culture. The bands sound mixes elements of Death metal with elements of Middle Eastern music. This is done by incorporating Egyptian instruments into the music. The music is mainly written by guitarist and founding member, Karl Sanders.
The band released a demo in 1994 and then quickly began work Festivals of Atonement. FoA was released in 1995, and was well revieved. Nile toured in the Southern US and supported bands like Obituary and Six Feet Under. Each show helped them progress up the ladder of metal stardom, while attracting more fans.
In 1996, Nile played several Southeastern shows with Incantation. That same year, they released Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka. In 1997, their record label Visceral Productions ceased to exist. Nile was quickly picked up by record label Repapse. Amongst the Catacombs was released on Repapse records in 1998. It is one of their best works to date. Following the release, they toured for 18 months and eventually were invited to tour with Morbid Angel. They followed with a European Tour and were called “one of metal’s most ambitious and fastest rising stars.” Unfortunately, Pete Hammoura tore his shoulder muscle and was replace by Tony Laureno. Tony was a former member of Angel Corpse. When they returned home in 1999, they wanted to create an even more epic and massive sounding record, while staying true to their Egyptian roots.
The creation of their second full length disc was more difficult then the band thought it would be. According to Sanders, the lyrics alone took him almost a year to compose. The main reason for this is because they wanted to seamlessly integrate the lyrics into the music. In 2000, Nile entered the studio to record “Black Seeds of Vengeance.” This album was very good, not a common “sophomore slump.” “Black Seeds of Vengeance” was “a relentless, scathing death metal assault that built off the energy and atmosphere of ‘Amongst the Catacombs’.” They followed up with a year long tour as both a support and a headliner.
The album had a large impact on the metal scene. The album was voted “Album of the Year by Terrorizer Magazine.” While they were gaining success and popularity, they had problems in the band. Chief Spires laft the band and was replaced by Jon Vesano, an ex-Dark Moon member. Now that the problem was fixed, they went back to work with producer Bob Moore to work on “In their Darkened Shrines.” It was one of their most ambitious project and the album was a true force to be reckoned with. Once again, they supported the tour by going on the road with Origin, Hate Eternal and Arch Enemy during summer 2002. The tour was sponsored by Revolver Magazine. They followed that tour with tha “Art of Noise Tour” which featured Naplam Death, Voivod and Strapping Young Lad. After a brief break, Nile was added to the Danzig headlined “Blacked of the Black Festival” mini tour. The tour featured Danzig, Superjoint Ritual, Behemoth, Lacuna Coil and Opeth. After that tour was finished this touring machine called Nile joined Metallica, Marylin Manson, Disturbed and Limp Bizkit (I know, a big difference between this and the other tours.) in Europe. After that, Nile went to Japan to headline their first tour there. After several months, they joined up with the “Art of Noise II” tour featuring Kreator, Amon Amarth, Goatwhore and Vader. They then traveled to Greece and the UK before joining the European X-Mas festival with Decide, Destruction, Amon Amarth and several others.
After the endless touring, Nile returned to America to work on “Annihilation of the Wicked.” They found a new drummer, George Kollias, and joined a pre-release tour with King Diamond. Annihilation of the wicked was released in 2005.

High quality write up. Karl Sanders seems like a good mix of badass and intellectual, the music can kind of wear on you though. It's still great stuff every once in a while, and Sanders's KXK Nile guitars are a nice touch.

allright i think im going to buy annihilation of the wicked. i heard its better than ITDS... that'd be cool... not that its a bad album, its just that it was extremely hard for me to get into. i've been listening to it for almost a year and i still havent fully appreciated the whole thing yet.
Annihilation Of The Wicked is an absolutely fantastic album. I really love the liner notes in the booklet, they give a whole new outlook to the lyrics. It's making a run for my top 5 albums of the year.
Nice job with the writeup. I would love the album if you would eddiesminion@gmail.com.

Nice job. Although 'Saurian Meditation' wasn't released by Nile, it was a solo project by Karl Sanders.
I never got into Nile, like they have a few good songs here and there, but they are very samey. I don't understand the love for Sanders, sure he's ok... but not good enough to be considered one of the genres finest guitarists.

I like Nile...I love the riffing, the solos, and the Egyption themes (although some think it's a gimmick..) ITDS is a nice progression and sans some of the samples, I think the Cd is pretty damn good... After a year of repeated listens BSOV grew on me as now I appreciate it as a true metal classic.. Love the liner notes on Nile's CD's too.More Egyption mythology that the Discovery channel..Insane drumming from both drummers in Nile, great solos and riffing..

Hey, guys...I must have somehow missed this thread, otherwise I would have definitely signed up for the list. Nile is a band that I've been meaning to check out for AGES! If it's too much of a bother, then that's cool...I'll just check them out on P2P when I get my computer back (on somebody else's right now).
Other than the Egyptian stuff, what do they sound like? Death metal tends to be very hit/miss for me...Opeth is one of my favorite bands, and I'm really into alot of the melodic death stuff like Dark Tranquility, but the stereotypical mono-tone cookie-monster type vocals don't really interest me that much (they don't serve as a complete deterrent either, however).

So what do you guys think of Nile's first album? I've been listening to it, and I think the production just muddies it up too much. There's a point where you can't tell what notes the Karl's playing, and Nile passed that point by miles on that album. There's also a bit too much filler for my taste.

Nice write up. Nile is probably my favorite Death Metal band overall, and deservidly so. AOTW is an amazing album, with Cast Down the Heretic being an absolutely epic song. Although to be honest I havn't listened to anything past User-Maat-Ra on the album in a few weeks, I'll have to take the time to hear the whole thing again soon.
I think The Blessed Dead was the first song I heard from Nile, a classic.

In Their Darkened Shrines or Annihilation of the Wicked.
Choose one.
GO!
Annihilation of the Wicked. It took me two full listens just to "absorb", then in the 3rd I could start to truely enjoy. That's my kind of album.

Well, it's going to take ages to upload it and email it, unless you don't mind the wait...

Yeah, but don't even bother with In The Beginning if you're short on time.

I would recommend downloading AIM. A lot of people on the forums use it and its a great way to quickly transfer files like cds.

MSN is at least 3 times better for just that purpose.
