Die-cast metal hoops are the heaviest, they choke the drum the most, giving a shorter sustain and more focus, less overtones. Generally these are used on pro kits, and only a few at that. They are more common on snare drums though. Tama and Pearl's high end kits make extensive use of them. Generally they are zinc or something like that I believe. They stay in tune better than other hoops because of the weight.

Triple-flanged steel hoops provide a more open sound with what some mx'ers would describe as "swirling overtones". The drums sing a lot better than they do with die-cast hoops. They don't stay in tune quiet as well and aren't as durable as die-cast, not that you should break hoops, you can bend a triple-flange.

Wood hoops are the lightest counterhoops, and they are like an extension of the actual drum shell. They resonate and provide even more warmth and tone to the drum. Many people don't like the thought of having wood hoops, but they are actually very durable.
