My teacher told me that I should use some big heavy sticks (like marching sticks) for practice and it should bring up my speed, does this work?

yeah...if you use heavier sticks it develops your muscles faster then when you use small sticks, you'll FLYYYY...

the problem there, is that you could develop the "wrong" muscles, and your playing could become very clunky, and you would have the whole massive forearm muscles thing going on. It isn't a bad idea, just make sure you're working the right muscles.

I think it may be personal preference, But I feel I have more control, speed, and dynamics (Power or finesse) With a big stick.

What can say Im used to Big sticks /Lame joke....

he said also you could tape pennys on the end of the stick to add some weight so you have a bit more resistance.

I always use a heavier stick on the pad, it's nice for a work out.

He is right, heavy sticks do give a workout. But be careful of working the wrong muscles. My pipe band drumming teacher hasmassive forearms because he used to play with really heavy sticks and he developed the wrong muscles, so he has had to go back and readjust his technique since then, in order to build up the smaller muscles, the ones that are important for speed and control.

as a 7a player, using 2b is heavy enough a change for me.. although i'm yet to buy a pad and just stick two mouse matts together :)

hell, whatever works eh. I have like 3 or 4 pads kickin ' around. Including a almost pocket sized mini pad. Wicked...I think yes.
