A little history:
The band was formed by Oscar Dronjak and Jesper Strömblad in 1993, after they had quit the death metal band Ceremonial Oath. Jesper and Oscar decided that Hammerfall had to be forwarded on a project level, since both wanted to keep on with their other bands, In Flames and Crystal Age, respectively. They enlisted the help of fellow metalheads Niklas Sundin and Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquility, and Johan Larsson.
The goal was to get together a couple of times each year, rehearsing to participate in the local music competition called "Rockslaget". Time went by, and Niklas and Johan were replaced by Glenn Ljungström (In Flames) and Fredrik Larsson (Crystal Age). Apart from the Hammerfall's "Steel Meets Steel" and "Hammerfall", the band performed the Pretty Maids classic "Red, Hot and Heavy" as well as the Alice Cooper's "Freedom".
1996. For the first time, Hammerfall advanced to the semi-finals of "Rockslaget" with "Steel Meets Steel", "Unchained" and the Judas Priest cover "Breaking The Law". Midst the celebration, it was discovered that vocalist Mikael was going to be on tour with Dark Tranquility at the time for the semi-finals. A new singer had to be brought in for this gig. After a bit of research, the name Joacim Cans came up. The band called him, and they were in business. The cooperation with Joacim proved to be a success, and he was immediately sworn in as a permanent member of Hammerfall. Though entering a strong performance in the competition, Hammerfall never reached the finals. The band was edged out in the last minute by the judges, who "perhaps feared the imminent and unavoidable rise of Heavy Metal once again to international prominence." However, a two-track live performance was recorded and sent on video tape to Roel van Reijmersdal of Dutch label Vic Records. He immediately offered Hammerfall a deal. Consequently, the summer and fall of this, the olympic year, was spent writing, rehearsing and perfecting the soon-to-be debut album, already entitled "Glory To The Brave".
The songs recorded during sixteen "fabulous November days" were: "The Metal Age", "Unchained", "Hammerfall", "Child Of The Damned", "Steel Meets Steel", "The Dragon Lies Bleeding", "I Believe", "Stone Cold" and "Glory To The Brave". All are original Hammerfall tracks except "Child Of The Damned", which was the band's tribute to the band Warlord. The lyrics deal with topics ranging from sword wielding warriors and the traveling of dimensions, to paying homage to Heavy Metal and the losing of beloved ones.
In January of 1997, the German label Nuclear Blast approached Vic Records and Hammerfall, with great interest. This encounter resulted in a licensed release of their debut CD and a four-album deal for the band, starting with the next record. In order to be able to give Hammerfall no less than 100 %, a few line-up changes became necessary. Jesper and Glenn decided to continue full time with In Flames, and they were replaced by Patrik Räfling and Stefan Elmgren, both members of Joacim's previous band Highlander. Oscar's and Fredrik's Crystal Age had ceased to exist a long time ago, but Fredrik also had another commitment: the thrash metal group Beyond, now called None. He decided to stick around long enough for the Hammerfall to find a replacement.
Nuclear Blast wanted to launch Hammerfall heavily onto the world, and in order to do that, they needed a visual aspect beside the music. Therefore, two videos were recorded in the beginning of May 1997, to the songs "Hammerfall" and "Glory To The Brave". The making of the videos took place in and outside the small Swedish town Mora, and was created and supervised by Alfen Productions. A single with the tracks "Glory To The Brave", "Hammerfall", "I Believe" and "The Dragon Lies Bleeding" was made and distributed throughout the world. On the sleeve, it was falsely printed "Stone Cold" as the fourth song. This was a mistake, as the song appearing on the CD is in fact "The Dragon Lies Bleeding". To do the music justice, the legendary great Andreas Marschall (Running Wild, Blind Guardian, U.D.O.) was asked to paint the full length album cover. He came up with the finished version a little over a week before his initial contact with the band, giving the Hammerfall concept its finishing touches. The month of May also saw the Hammerfall line-up completed, when Magnus Rosén joined on bass. Magnus is an extremely skilled bassist and has proved to be a valuable addition to the band. As hard as it seemed to be to replace Fredrik, the Hammerfall line-up finally seems to be complete!
Hammerfall have appeared on different tribute albums and their cover version of Helloweens "I Want Out", which also contained Dio´s "Man On The Silver Mountain", showed that they do indeed make great cover versions. 1999 was also the year where they released their very first video called "The First Crusade", which contained live recordings, music videos and much more.
Hammerfall released their third studio album through Nuclear Blast in 2000, followed by three more album after that. Their most recent album is "Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken".

I've seen some pretty good bootlegs and also the The Templar Renegade Crusades DVD which is pretty good....a big surprise for me was seeing them opening for Death the line up pairing seemed strange, but then I realized that both hammerfall and death are on the same label it's a pretty cool watch.

Crimson Thunder is a rad album. Other than that I've heard the songs "Riders on the Storm", "Hearts on Fire", and "Child of the Damned." It seems like every new song I hear from them becomes my favorite.
Good write up. They're not my favorite of bands but they're pretty good. I got the Legacy of Kings album through the daily upload or something and I like it.

A friend of mine was discussing a DVD they brought out. He said during a song either Oscar Dronjak or Stefan Elmgren throws his guitar up in the air and Joacim Cans catches it and continues playing the song. I thought that was pretty cool :p
Anyway, I like Hammerfall. Heeding The Call being my choice for best song and Legacy of Kings on the album front.

Cool write up mate!
I really like Hammerfall's unashamedly straight-ahead style of no-nonsense metal; I usually put some on after I've had a bit too much Opeth and such.
I have all their albums, plus the One Crimson Night DVD - I love the opening bit with the big dude in the red armour hitting that exploding anvil with the enormous hammer!
If that's the opening, you know you're gonna get a show!

Are there any live/demo/whatever recordings of the band when Stanne was the singer? I figured he was one of the guitar players, I didn't know he was the singer. I'm wondering if he sang clean or did his growls; either one would be interesting to hear.

I'm not sure. But I doubt that he would growl in Hammerfall. It wouldn't go with the music really.

Power Metal isn't defined by speed, it's more to do with melody, lyrical subject matter and vocals. ie clean and not growled. Plus there is a concensus of opinion that PM should have keyboards to be PM.
Speed isn't necessary.
Anyhow, why does no-one mention Hammer Of Justice? It's one of my faves.

Has anyone seen their music video with the Womens Curling Team from Sweden? It is quite possibly the best music video I have ever seen.
