I just don't see a point, why have a tiny snare when you have a regular one? I've never heard any professional artist use one.

Why not have options?

I went to see Gavin DeGraw live with my girlfriend last winter and I wasn't very enthusiastic about going, until I seen the drummers kit/heard him play. Mr. DeGraw had with him 3 really amazing session players.

The drummer was on a 6 piece Yamaha maple custom with a musashi oak side snare. It was really amazing to see him work a side snare in to the music really really well!

I also used a 10x6 side snare in my drumming, but I recently sold it and am planning on buying another nice one :D And just think, throw off the snares and you have one great sounding little tom!

I've never heard any professional artist use one.And your point is? SO what if you never seen a pro use it? Some ppl like to options, it's just an effect, and it's fun to have two, it can really spice up your playing. Also Look at Tomas Lang Kit I Pretty damn sure I saw a side snare there.

so you have alternate options if you need a higher pitched snap.

What's the point of having more than one tom? More than one crash?

Different sounds. Thomas Lang uses his aux snare a lot from what I've seen.

Well now that's a load of crap.

Frankly, it's very understandable how you feel. Such close minded and derogatory thinking generally leads to confusion and fustration.

I for one have seen plenty of pros use them. It gives you alternate sounds to use in different song sections, or different songs period. But then the use of such things takes imagination and creativity, and you apparently have none.

Why do you need 5 more strings when you already have 1???

Why do you need 5 more strings when you already have 1??? No! All strings on guitar sound the same! :p That is how thread starter is viewing it.

I just don't see a point, why have a tiny snare when you have a regular one? Dude just like guitar strings, Every size has the same sound! :thumb:

Extra tones ect ect...

It's just another voice.

^Jim's right.

It's just like cymbals or any other add on toms/timbales/exotic percussion item.

It just gives you another sound option. After playing with a side snare, I realized how much fun they were and decided I would buy one eventually.

why do you have more than one tom OMFG!!!

I see your point and yes I know that people will say why have more than one tom but it is a bit different with a snare, but it's nice to have a different sound. I must agree with everyone else, pro's use them and they are fun to pay around with.

no its the exact same thing as a snare. except it cant be used the same way, thats the only difference.

i don't think i could e-bash this guy any more if i tried. poor fellow..

anyway, as has been said in various degrees of sarcasm, it's just adding another sound/s to your kit. secondary snares can be handy if you're looking for a particular effect that would sound good in particular situations, but would not be appropriate for general snare use.

well that is a stupid question ... u need 6 strings to be able to do chords and to have easier access to notes for soloing ... and theres like a ton of other reasons but ill get really angry trying to make u look like a fool :)

but anyways, a better question would be why would u need a 7 string guitar when u only need a 6 string? u dont need that 7th string just like u dont need a second snare, but it allows for more creativity ... but like me, u can go with the basics (1 snare/6 string guitar) and think outside the box ... like using your elbow to change the pitch of the snare drum for a really nice crack or detuning the low e string in the middle of a song to hit that note u want, then tuning it back

:thumb:

edit: im just gonna add this ... even with thinking outside the box, ur still more limited to what u can do than if u were to actually have more things to work with, be it strings or drums!

YAY :)

Having the ability to make chords... is just another option for sound, just like the side snare. Having a secondary snare can also make a drum solo easier, you don't *have* to put them to your left, they can be behind a tom so you can be rolling all over the toms and have the snare as easy to access as one of the toms, instead of having to pull your arm back towards yourself.

ummm k? i was kinda trying to back up guitar and relate it to drums at the same time

but uh yeah ... chords are an essential part of music ... and i talked about thinking outside the box! OUTSIDE!!!!!!! ;)

ps: im too lazy to read every reply since its 2:11 am right now and the only thing keeping me awake is typing up crap

and to back you up! ...take a look at brain's artist video on the pdp site! he has it in a sweet spot

Wow, sorry. Gotta laugh at myself, I read that totally wrong. I thought you were saying that 6 strings were totally necessary, while an extra snare wasn't at all. Sorry ;).

I've never heard any professional artist use one.

Thomas Lang
Horacio Hernandez
Benny Greb
Johnny Rabb
Marco Minneman (who my cousin nickname 'Macro Miniman')
Jojo Mayer
Virgil Donati
Mike Portnoy
Morgen Agren

And many many more.....

If you have a radio, then you have heard artists who use more than one snare. Example: Kenny Aronoff.

Finch... I really hope you didn't think he was actually asking that. It's relating guitar to the question like your 6 vs 7 string example did.

I was thinking about Johnny Rabb when I read this thread..

Eat it, man. The guy has three snares.

Jezen
11-23-2005, 08:07 AM
One is to the right of his floor tom yeah?

Stert
11-23-2005, 09:28 AM
i think he has one in the norma spot, one to the left of his hats and one to the
right of his floor tom, almost under where you put a ride on a 4 peice kit.
johnny rabb is da bomb

edit: i guess you could say one of his snares is to the right of a floor tom, since he plays with that 16x16 floor tom he uses as a hand bass. and he puts that to his left past his hats and 2nd snare =)
