View Full Version : What Do You listen For In Music??????

The Way I see It Peopl Look For 3 Main Things In Music.
Meaning in the lyrics
The Music Itself
Both
I myself Listen for Meaning in most songs, but the pointless songs, I listen For the musically talented Parts. So what do you listen for?
classicrockman
11-22-2005, 08:02 PM
Mostly music itself. That's why I listen to so much instrumental stuff (Yngwie, Satch, etc.). Soemtimes I could care less about what they're saying. But if it really gets annoying, I'll get mad.

But what I donjt understand is, How people can just listen for the notes (Music itself) like music is a physial way of expressing ones feelings, I think we should consider that when listning dont you?

Lyrics are overrated.

I usually listen to guitar, seeing I'm a guitar player, but recently I've been listening to the keys and drums alot too. If the lyrics really stand out, and I find myself repeating them, even if I didn't make an attempt to remember them, then I will look them up and try to decipher the meaning.

I don't think it's humanly possible for me to care any less about lyrical quality. Even the vocals themselves don't matter too much, as long as the music redeems them. Lyrics and vocals are icing on the cake.

I dont really think so. I mean mainstream stuff like Greenday, Sum 41, Blink 182. The Bands that just have lyrics in there to make the song sound good, ya, overrated. But Bands like Dream Theater, Led Zepplin, etc... The ones who actually mean what they have said in there songs, thats just hard to find now days

Zeppelin fans don't care about lyrics. :p
Depending what type of music you're trying to listen to and who's playing. Like if I'm listening to Woody Guthrie or Bob Dylan I'm not going to focus on the music as much as much as the vocals and lyrics but if I'm listening to say Funkadelic or Sly Stone I'll focus stricly on the music.
I'm sick of these threads.....

11-22-2005, 08:20 PM
Ya I listen To drumming more than all the other insturments, like I still listen to the guitars and credit them on there talent, but drums are what I focus on mainly.
And true, Zepplin Fans dont care about lyrics, and they did have some Pretty ****ty lyrics, but those are still one of the bands I listen to just for music wise, and some lyrics. I know I used them as an example, that was my mistake I was un-aware of it. And I apologize.

Just because they believe in what they say still does not change the opinion of mine that lyrics are overrated. I am pretty sure plenty of bands nowadays that also believe what they say in their lyrics, you just haven't looked very hard.
There are very few songs that I even care about lyrics, they are not very high on my wants in music.

Lyrics are very important in bands I listen to. Not saying I wouldn't listen to bands that have bad lyrics. But when lyrics are AMAZING, then music will be even better. For example, Johnny Cash used simple guitar riffs and such which everyone can play, but his deep vocals and amazing lyrics are what makes his music enjoyable. I mean really, nobody listens to his music for guitars, bass, or drums. It's all about voice and the lyrics.
Most metal bands have decent lyrics though. But I usually listen to metal for sweet instrumentals not lyrics. But lyrics do mean alot, and add alot to the music imo.

I generally don't pay attention to lyrics, and sometimes I even avoid reading lyrics (when it comes to lyricists I can't understand) because it will sometimes destroy my idea of what the song is communicating and that's actually caused me to like the song less in a few cases.
Fix'd :thumb:.

Lyrics almost always dont matter, but the
vocal melodies do. that's whre i draw the line.
I don't listen to anything solely for the lyrics. There are a few songs I can't stand simply because of the lyrics but I usually like a song or note based on the music. I voted for both because like I said there are some songs I hate because of the lyrics that the music doesn't really make a difference (unless it's like god on guitar, bass, and drums).

Definitely music only. I don't care what the band is singing, screaming, growling, etc. about, as long as it sounds pleasing to my ears.
I'll analyze it after I decide that I like the song. :p

LOOK... THE RAIN SONG AND BATTLE OF EVERMORE!
It is the springtime of my loving
The second season I am to know
You are the sunlight in my growing
So little warmth I felt before
It isn't hard to feel me glowing
I watched the fire nn-that grew so low, ooh, ooh, whoa-oh
It is the summer of my smiles
Flee from me, keepers of the gloom
Speak to me only with your eyes
It is to you I give this tune
Ain't so hard to recognize, oh
These things are clear to all from time to time
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, oh-ho, oh-ho
Uh, talk, talk, talk, talk
Hey, I felt the coldness of my winter
I never thought it would ever go-whoa
I cursed the gloom that set upon us, 'pon us, 'pon us
but I know that I love you so-oh
Oh-whoa, mm-but I know that I love you so-whoa
These are the seasons of emotion
and like the wind, a-they rise and fall
This is the wonder of devotion
I see the torch we all must hold
This is the mystery of the quotient, quotient
Uh, upon us all, upon us all a little rain must fall
Just a little rain, hoh, now
Aw, woo-ooh, yeah, yeah, yeah
The Battle of Evermore
----------------------
The Queen of Light took her bow, and then she turned to go
The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom
and walked the night alone
Oh, dance in the dark of night, sing 'till the mornin' light
The Dark Lord rides in force tonight
and time will tell us haw-all
Oh, throw down your plow and hoe, rest not to lock your home
Side by side, we await the might of the darkest of them all
Oh-ooh-whoa, ooh-whoa-oh-oh
I hear the horses' thunder down in the valley below
I'm waitin' for the angels of Avalon
Waitin' for the eastern glow
The apples of the valley hold the seeds of happiness
The ground is rich from tender care
Repay, do not forget, no, no
Oh, dance in the dark of night, sing to the morning light
The apples turn to brown and black, the tyrant's face is red
Ho, now/Oh, war is the common cry, pick up your swords and fly
The sky is filled with good and bad mortals never know
Now, oh-ho, ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ahh/Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh-ooh-oh-oh
Oh, well, the night is long, the beads of time pass slow
Tired eyes on the sunrise, waitin' for the eastern glow
The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath
The drums will shake the castle wall
The Ringwraiths ride in black, ride on
Oh, sing as you raise your bow/Ride on
Shoot straighter than before
No comfort has the fire at night that lights the face so cold
Dance in the dark of night, sing 'till the mornin' light
The magic runes are writ in gold to bring the balance back
Bring it back
At last, the sun is shining, the clouds of blue roll by
A-with flames from the dragon of darkness
The sunlight blinds his eyes, ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Ah-oh-ho, ooh, ooh-ooh, aaah/oooh-ooh-ooh-uh-uhh
Bring it back, bring it back, a-bring it back, bring it back
Bring it back, bring it back, bring it back, bring it back
Oh, now, oh, now, oh, now, oh, oh, now, oh, now, oh, now
Bring it back, bring it back, bring it back, a-bring it back
Whoa, now, oh, now, oh, now, oh, whoa, now, oh, now, oh, now
Bring it, bring it, bring it, bring it
Bring it, bring it, bring it, bring it
Bring it, bring it, bring it, bring it, bring it

I care about both, I love poetry and music. what people are forgeting nowadays is melody! i have trouble finding thoughtful, soulful melodies in allot of music. my favorite lyricist...hmmm...im gonna have to say good ol dave matthews. now he is a real poet
But what I donjt understand is, How people can just listen for the notes...
i listen to allot of jazz/improv and symphonic music and i find it has allot more to say than most rock/pop music. not only that but it is much better musically too!

I can, but it wouldn't describe those lyrics at all.

People, to put things into perspective, ani_starkiller has repeatedly asserted in the Politics Forums that philosophy is the science of utopia. Don't bother arguing with her. She's just a pretentious pseudointellectual with an ego problem... kind of like me in middle school now that I think about it.
Anyway, I'm picky, but not that picky. What I care about above anything else is "Does the artist have something to say? A purpose?" Now, this is pretty nebulous. It can be political tirades, social commentary, recounting fantasy as an allegory to life, or just giving people something to have fun with. This is why I generally dislike bands like Dream Theater, as they really seem to be musicianship for its own sake. Too self-indulgent. Of course, bands like The White Stripes are the opposite extreme: mediocrity for its own sake. Either way, the artists seem more concerned with themselves than the art itself.

I honestly couldn't see the Beatles not having the great lyrics that they did. I mean sure his music would've been great still but having great lyrics tops things off quite nicely. Also couldn’t see Syd Barrett being as effective without the lyrics he had. All and all I don’t think great lyrics are entirely necessarily but can add a very nice touch to the music.

Can you catch a fly with chopsticks while rapping the lyrics to 911 Is a Joke by Public Enemy after pulling of a blues solo in Bb minor and dressing up like a member of the band Manowar as you smoke a joint which you will sing songs about legalizing later while shaving your head in a socially unacceptable manner? Only then will you be True.
Hehe.

I think that Maynard James Keenan said it best:
"The music must always come first. After all, we're not exactly selling out arenas by doing spoken word performances, are we?"
I think that having intelligent, poetic lyrics is definitely great, but music must always come first.

I know too many people who listen to bands just because they have a good drummer. I seriously can't imagine liking a band for the drums.
Well, I assume that this is because you're...not a drummer? :p
Truth be told, 90% of the reason why I listen to Porcupine Tree is because of Gavin Harrison. They're a great band with some cool tunes, don't get me wrong...but he really makes the band for me. Now, again...I don't know if I could like a band solely for the drums if I dislike the rest of the group, but there are definitely certain bands that are really made by their respective drummers. Tool would be another example...they'd still be an awesome band, but Danny Carey is what makes them one of my favorites.
