Had trouble naming the thread but anyways, post the bands that you have/will have an influence of in your band. So you post the genre that your band is or will be, you post the bands that you take influence of and you write what you take as an influence from that band. Example: lyrics, vocals, riffage ect. What ever your influences in the band are.
So it would go like this:
Genre:
Bands I took/will take influences of:
Influences:
Hope this works out...

Is this against the rules?
Genre: Trahs/Progressic metal
Influences: King Crimson, Dream theater, Symphony X, Megadeth, Testament, old metallica, Vio-Lence, Slayer, Pink Floyd
Bands mentioned above will influence in pretty much every aspect of the song writing.

I don't really see why this would be illegal.
Let's see:
Genre: Older style thrash or death metal.
Influences: Slayer, Kreator, Cannibal Corpse
I really want to make a band, and those three bands are huge influences on me, when I try and make my own music.

Genre: Progressive Punk/Hardcore
Influences: Dredg, A Wilhelm Scream, Thrice, Strung Out, Leftover Crack, Yes, Rush, many many more
I'd like it to take the intensity of Hardcore and Punk music, with the raw emotion and lyrical subjects therein, then add in the musicianship of Progressive music with a complex balance of hard and fast, and slow and relaxed.
Genre:Power/Prog. Metal
Bands I took/will take influences of: Stratovarius, Dream Theater, Tool, Opeth, Yngwie Malmsteen, Rata Blanca, Pink Floyd, Symphony X, Metallica and Megadeth.
Influences: Stratovarius (Riffage/solos), DT (Riffage), Tool (Overall), Opeth (Overall, specially in the lyrical aspect), Malmsteen (Guitar of course), Rata Blanca (Overall), Pink Floyd (Lyrics), Symphony X (Overall), Metallica (Riffage (Main infleuce has been Kill 'Em All and RTL) and Megadeth (Overall).

Whats extreme Power Metal ?
Whats the difference between it and well, Power Metal ?
Extreme power metal often gets confused with melodic death. Bands like Norther, Kalmah and Children Of Bodom are extreme power metal. The vocals are usually death or harsh, and the music is heavy, faster guitars, and the lyrical themes aren't usually fantasy. Listen to Kalmah and then go listen to Sonata Arctica, you will hear the difference.
Genre : Folk/Prog/Electronic/Adult Contemporary
Band influences: Tori Amos, Daughter Darling, Tool, Katatonia, Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Elliott Smith, Collide, Jeff Buckley
Since I've always used female vocals, similar vocal stylings to Daughter Darling over a varying musical backdrop.

Present band genre: Crappy modern "metal"
Present band influences: Lamb of God, Shadows Fall, Metallica. (My current band sucks badly)
Hopeful band genre: Awesome death/prog metal
Hopeful band influences (when I find some decent musicians): Immolation, Nile, Meshuggah, Tool.
Killtacular
11-22-2005, 07:40 PM
Genre: Technical Death Metal
Influences
Vocals: Opeth's growls, a la Åkerfeldt
Gee-tar: some slower, heavier riffs kind of like some Opeth and a select few of Nile. Then the faster riffs like Cryptopsy, Nile, etc. Melody with crushing brutality.
Drums: Nile, Cryptopsy, Tool, Meshuggah
Bass: *blank stare* ...uhhh... Morningrise-era Opeth?
Song Structure: Kind of like a long Nile song, in the the vein of Unas, except not that long. Opeth would be nice too, but without the clean vocals, keeping the clean interludes. Average song length of 6-10 minutes would let me die happy.
I suppose that's about it.

My "old band" in my post was my actual band for a couple years. Our music was progressive at times, but our singer really didn't fit our style that well.. We definitely had to start writing more up-tempo, catchy songs. That sucked.
Then we broke up.

My (our) band's nucleus is there now - we practise every Sat night and once we find a decent bassist, and a keyboardist that'll be that. Hope to start gigging early to mid 2006. I will post when we do.
Genre - Power Metal with influences from Opeth, etc.
Major influences are Nightwish, After Forever, but with a good helping of Paradise Lost (I know it sounds odd!) and Opeth ( cos we love the jazzy style on Damnation and Deliverence)
Both female and male vocals - gives more scope

Had trouble naming the thread but anyways, post the bands that you have/will have an influence of in your band. So you post the genre that your band is or will be, you post the bands that you take influence of and you write what you take as an influence from that band. Example: lyrics, vocals, riffage ect. What ever your influences in the band are.
So it would go like this:
Genre:
Bands I took/will take influences of:
Influences:
Hope this works out...
My band
Genre: Progressive Metal/ Rock.
Bands I took/will take influences of: Dream Theater, King Crimson, Pain of Salvation(vocal harmonies etc.) Opeth, Early Queen, Oceansize, Refused Quite a few more.
Covers:
Dream Theater: Voices, Metropolis, Misunderstood, Root Of All evil (Not played live yet though), Status Seeker.
Pain Of Salvation: Water
Pink Floyd: Breathe
Rush: YYZ
Opeth: A Fair Judgement.
About 15-20 of our own songs.
Why don't you people just YSI your songs? It's legal and it's quicker.
My current band
Genre: Black/Death/Thrash metal meets Horror Punk.
Influences: Mayhem, Immortal, Darkthrone, Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Sepultura, Slayer, Burzum, The Misfits
We're having problems finding a lead guitarist at the moment which sucks, but as soon as we get a permanent one we'll be concentrating heavily on writing our own stuff.
Hope to be playing parties/small gigs by the end of this year/start of next year, we've got enough covers nailed to play for around an hour.
/me copies Ollie
Our covers list is as follows:
Slayer - Raining Blood
Slayer - Bloodline
Slayer - War Ensemble
Mayhem - Deathcrush
Mayhem - Chainsaw Guts****
Mayhem - Freezing Moon
Sepultura - Arise
Cannibal Corpse - A Skull Full of Maggots
Then we have a 15-song Misfits set-list which goes like this...
Abominable Dr.Phibes
American Psycho
From Hell They Came
Blacklight
She
Where Eagles Dare
Ghouls Night Out
Halloween
Braineaters
Kong at the Gates
The Forbidden Zone
Scream!

Current
Genre - Grindcore/hardcore/jazz/tech metal
Influences - Psyopus, Daughters, The Number 12 Looks Like You, The Sawtooth Grin, The Jonbenet, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Luddite Clone, Tower of Rome
Vocals - Ed Gein type thing with everyone on vocals but then a lead vocalist too. High pitched shrieking and screaming from him.
Tars - Lots of fast jazz based chromatic stuff. Slides and tapping galore.
Bass - I'm not sure... he does what a bass is supposed to do. PLay fast and sound good. He's the one who actually plays in a key.
Drums - Fast.
Song structure - you might get to hear the same part twice if you're lucky. Songs are usually about 2 minutes long or less with lots and lots of parts.
Band I wish I could have
I'm in one of them.
The other
Pop/post-hardcore/alternative
Influences: Minus the Bear, Dredg, At the Drive-In, SikTh, Bear Vs. Shark, The Sound of Animals Fighting, Botch

Current band (Beneath The Flesh)
Genre: Progressive Death/Black metal
Influences: Opeth, Emperor, Arsis, Metallica, Wintersun, Necrophagist, Extol,
Vocals: Horde-ish puking black metal screams, kinda Zao-ish early on. Still working on my style, but it will be black metal for sure.
Guitars: Opeth riffing and song structure (multiple sections), Arsis riffing sometimes, Wintersun riffing, In Flames melody, Extol Synergy-era dissonance and tech riffing, Emperor dissonance, Arsis wannabe soloing(hammer-on, pull of runs) Opeth emotional soloing. Some tech from Necrophagist. Triumphant sounding chords from Extol, genre hopping ala Between the Buried and me, frenzy chord walls of Lengsel.
Bass - Tool-ish interesting bass (on newer stuff).
Drums: Death/Black/Power metal with some jazz influences.
Song Structure: Many many different parts. Songs usually range from 4-6 and half minutes. New song over 10 minutes (huge amount of parts). Opeth-ish style song structures.
Future band
Genre: Space Metal/Post-hardcore
Influences: Riffing/Effects from Hopesfall, Melodic ideas from Glassjaw, Epicness from 30 seconds to mars, dissonance from Shiner, Evoloving song structure style from Tool/Postman Syndrome, epicness of Wintersun, atmosphere of Blueprint-era Extol.
hopefully one day I'll make that band.

Influences - Pantera, Slayer, Led Zeppelin, Sabbath.
Dream Band Genre - Progressive, Classic Rock
Influences - Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, The Mars Volta.
I used to be in a band, they were a very hearty mix of classic rock bands, I had to jump ship, because it was terribly boring.
Right now, I'm working on an acoustic project, it's just me on my own.
So far I've worked out some good versions of:
ABBA - Voulez Vouz,
Electric Six - Gay Bar,
The Smiths - I Want The One I Can't Have,
Iron Maiden - Where Eagles Dare.
I want to build up a repertoire, and maybe put some on a disc or something.

I've got my soloish stuff.
Genre- Prog/industrial rock (See: Poseur avant-garde)
Influences
Tool: Odd timed, somewhat sludgy riffs.
Porcupine Tree: Incorporating different scales into a single song, simple acoustic strumming patterns with lots of layers.
Arcturus: Some of the keyboard layers I have remind me of Sverd's work in Arcturus.
Opeth: I've written various passages that have been influences by Akerfeldt's acoustic playing
Nine Inch Nails: I've written a couple songs in Fruity Loops that have a very industrial NIN sound, so that's an influence.
Pretty much the only thing I do is write guitar parts, and I create piano and symphonic loops in Fruity Loops. I have a drummer friend who has a near-professional recording studio, so once I get something to the point where I'm happy with it, and I'll just ask if he'd like to help me out with recording, and maybe lay down some quick drums, and we'll be off.

I've done some minimal toying with this, hopefully it will take shape sometime in the near future.
Genre: Black Metal
Influences
Darkthrone - classic black metal, similar style of chord progressions
Old old old old Dimmu Borgir - I enjoy using very entrancing melodic atmospheres
Satyricon - faster, more complex style of riffing like Nemesis Devina
Satanic Warmaster - Very harsh, yet mixes ever black metal sound possible into one band
Mayhem - face it, everyone loves Mayhem back in the day

I want to form a band that incorporates a multitude of the generas I like.
I want to transition between ambient, low fi, experimental indie, and raw, heavy and fast core. All of the music will be extremely technical.
Bands: Modest Mouse, Red Sparrows, Pg.99, Queens of the Stone Age, Circle Takes The Square, Sigur Ros, Sawtooth Grin, Takaru, A Silver Mt. Zion, Ekkaia, Between The Buried and Me, Pinback, Pig Destroyer, Marcy Playground, Tower of Rome, Botch
IF ANYONE KNOWS OF ANY QUALITY BANDS THAT DO THIS PLEASE LET ME KNOW

My two current bands...and I'm basing this off of one's upcoming release and the other's only release...
Bled to Death
Black/Death/Thrash
Satyricon, Black Funeral, Winterthrall, Wolvesguard
Indictment
Death/Grindcore
Impending Doom, Whitechapel, JFAC, etc.
Bled to Death has taken a more straight heavy metal feel with BM vocals with the upcoming release. Indictment was a mix of deathcore type crap but I'm getting really sick of it and would like to start playing straight grindcore.

Well my bandmates are more into Punk and I'm more into hardcore/metalcore so we try and combine the two the best we can.
