So, i was just wondering what kind of sticks you guys would suggest to me and tell me why you like those sticks. I play basically every kind of music. Right now i'm using 5A's cause they're thin and they're really fast.
Bigger sticks are faster :)

I'm loving my pair of VF Dave Weckl Evolutions. One bad thing, they have this orange finish, so when your hands get a teeny bit sweaty, the sticks go bye bye.

No way! You use'em too?
ProMarks got those huge 3' sticks... haha
I use oh hum.. in order of number - 2B, 3A, 5B, F1, MSII all Vic Firth, all wood tip. Also using some modified Vic 2B's right now, well been playing with some different designs/lengths.

ProMarks got those huge 3' sticks... haha Yeah a local store used to carry em', thats TOO big.
well been playing with some different designs/lengths. I use Vics firths' 2B as well. How do you get them in different lenghts?
Well... there's 2 ways.
#1: Yourself at home. Though you can only take away from the current design.
#2: This one is fairly obvious.
On a side note it's nice to be able talk drums on vacation far away from them...

sounds like i'm way outnumbered here, but i'm at the other end of the spectrum. i usually won't play anything larger than a 7A. gives me total dynamic control, and my jazz cymbals are extremely responsive so i need a hell of a lot of control to play them the right way. right now i'm stuck on HD4s, that's everything i want in a stick.

i like to stick (pun unintended) with my david silveria vater sticks. i like the nylon tip and the weight of the stick.

All sticks have the same amount of "control". Zero. It's a stick.
All control comes from you. You should be able to play at level with any stick. Though nothing bigger then a 7a?!
That's nuts man, you must have tiny hands or somethin.
fatback 3a and im switching soon to somethign a tad bit shorter maybe.

^^^ Pro-Mark Japanesse Oak 5A's (woods) are my weapons of choice in general. A very well balanced, durable stick.
The great thing about the oak is the tip of the stick doesn't chip away all that easy. So you get great response even from an older pair of sticks.

just my personal preference. i even played for about 6 months only using zildjian bill stewarts. now that i've moved off them i can't believe i did that, but i just prefer lighter sticks. always have. my hands aren't small though..

I play zildjian's barker sticks. They're nice and long, just the right width (for me) and have a ball tip, which I find great for getting a marching sound without the huge marching sticks.
Oh, and, contrary to popular belief, the white finish doesn't kill your cymbals, and does look wickedsweet!

Finch88
11-23-2005, 12:59 AM
well i have two preferences ... on for traditional and one for matched grip
traditional: short, wood tip, round, 5a, gloss finish (shorter sticks are easier for me to use in traditonal and the thinner shaft and gloss finish is a little easier on my fingers)
matched: long, wood tip, round, 5b, natural (longer sticks are nice for kit playing and the thicker shaft puts less stress on my hands and having no finish helps prevent the stick from flying out of my hand)
yeah ... im lame :p but hey, ill use pretty much anything cuz i can play all sticks pretty much the same in terms of speed and accuracy, but comfort = happiness for me :)

If weight is an issue their is a rather large amount of larger sticks in lighter weight woods, such as maple.
But of course, always use a big stick!

8A Standard or 7A Standard Vic Firth Nylon Tips,
5A Japanese White Oaks with Wood Tips or
Dave Weckl Signature Sticks (the wood tip version)
edit: weight and size are important, but many forget the tip. A ball-shaped wood tip sounds vastly different to an acorn-shaped nylon of the same weight and length.

I use VF Dave Weckl Sigs, wood tip, or VF Gadd Sigs, Wood tip.
The Gadd sigs were the first pair of sticks I bought, after a free pair of 5As.
I actually like the finish on them, the way it slides through the fingers a little easier. They do tend to slip out occasionaly though.

Do you use Dave Weckl sticks with a Nylon or Wood tip? I have both pairs just now and the Nylon tips have lasted me AGES. I wanna take a pic of how thin my sticks have got. It's incredible.
I never realised the difference between Nylon and Wood tips. My band has a Ska song and I always use the Nylon sticks for that song just because of the sound difference.

The sticks I've been sticking too (hahahah actually didn't mean it to sound like that) are 5B Smooth Grooves by Head Hunters. I don't stay with one stick for more than like three months....But I've never liked larger sticks. I don't care if you say their faster, or more whatever, i like moderatly thick sticks. I've been using VF 5A for a while now that I think about it, but I was using...2B's I think at one point and they sucked.
Nylon tip of corse, I don't care if my Ride looks pretty it reponds the way I like it to.
I dislike Promark's sticks simply because they seem to break easier, and in the same spot, near the tip, kinda like shaving off.
