View Full Version : I need to vent...

I apologize in advance my friends. But I need to vent and you all seem like reasonable people. I am arguing with my bass player about our music, which IMO is not very good. He's being the typical metalhead, who is obsessed with writing heavy, mosh music. I suggested maybe adding some dynamics, or possibly even...turning off the distortion. And what does he do, starts ranting about how our songs are full of dynamics and how we don't need to play clean, because that's boring whiny music. jesus christ, what a tool. So anyways, I figured out his problem. he writes music for other people rather than himself. He writes music that people will move around to at shows, and mosh to. Where as myself...I write music for me. I would rather sit in a basement and play music I loved, then go play shows with music I am not passionate about. I don't care about playing shows, or what others think, all of that is secondary. Agh, I'm just pissed, and that is my bitch session.

Dont play it if you don't want to.
It can get annoying not playing exactly. You doing the right thing in tryiong to have creative input as this always stimulates a bit of interest in the song and is just generally healthy musical habit.
If he is a tool, hes probably disposable so get rid of him, or bring someone in to tell him hes wrong.

yeah man. I'm seriously considering leaving...this conversation with him hasmade me realize that we are writing music for completely different reasons, and want to write different music. I guess it's a creative conflict, but I don't really enjoy playing ****ing blast beats and a bunch of other ****ty metal music for 3 1/2 minutes.

Just remember that bands come and go, but true musicians do not. You seem to have the right attitude, in my opinion at least, and you should stick with that. That said, being in a band is all about communication, and there will be a give and take. However, if he is completely unbending on the matter and you feel as though you are not being fulfilled as a musician, then perhaps that means that you need to find another project to work on. If your fellow bandmates object to you playing for multiple bands, then that is a bad sign to begin with, and you may consider moving on.

Thanks man, that's some good advice that I'm definetely going to take to heart. I completely agree that bands come and go, and I've already got another project sort of in the works, so I may focus on that one completely now or something.
My band has been going throgh the same thing. We are trying to write good songs that we think represent us as a band but our singer is too busy trying to be cool sometimes. It really sucks and it doesnt matter to me whether I am at home writing on my computer or with a band, I just want the music to be sincere.

Think about it this way.
If you're having this much aggro at this stage in the band.
Think about a year down the road.
Unless things improve and you say your piece.
You're just not going to be happy in the band and this will affect your playing too.

i think you should give one more try. stick with the band and try talking to the bass player and get other guys in the band to talk to him, try to find a middle ground, you never know if you left something because of a dip in attitude. if you really dislike your music and having to blast beat your way through every song, and practice is no longer fun, then i suggest you quit and go with another band. not trying to sound like a dick but music should be played for reasons other than money.

Well after reading that you and your bass player are pretty dumb.
You know that reading requires comprehension right, not just looking at a bunch of words?
Well after reading that you and your bass player are pretty dumb.
Reason being?

Just find someone new to jam with. Dont waste your time with people like this. You will eventually find musicians with the same mindset and that when youll have alot of fun and grow as a musician

When did I ever mention playing music for money? I don't give a **** if I never make a penny off of music in my life, as long as I enjoy playing it. Anyways, I figure I'm probably gonna leave, seeing as I don't like the way the music is, and I don't see it getting any better.
Talk things out and if you are going in different directions then it's time to go your seperate ways.

that's the plan. It's nothing personal, I just think the music sucks, and I don't enjoy playing it. So I'm thinking I'm out.

Your bassist is a whore. A toolbag whore. You should probably kick him out of the band and find someone who likes good music (probably someone who likes opeth, that sounds like ur man). Or kill him hes just wasting the air.
or he doesnt get input because he is a bassist.

he does wear alot of black, and he has these stupid pants haha, and he does like death metal, but not religously lol. And he does wear steel toe boots quite often, and he is an idiot metalhead. I mean some metalheads are reasonable, but he's one of the ones who is like METAL AAAAAAAAARGH!!! You know, and everything else, but metal sucks to him.

Yeah I agree with Det_Nosnip. Ive been in 3 bands with my bass player and guitar player but with different other people and different names. Only true musicians will stay together while the people who do it for pussy end up not having a band. I say just dump him and find somebody else who actually listens to what other members say.
hahaha slightly confuzzeld sea lion hahahaha
I ment to say pussy

My two cents: There is no right or wrong in these cases. His priorities and tastes are just different than yours. It doesn't make him a tool any more than the fact that you like or dislike something makes you one.
You're not going to change him or his tastes, so seek other musicians who share your goals and passions.

Yeah. I know, this isn't anything personal against him, it just musically isn't working. Anyways, I've already got a new project underway with some musicians I've been wanting to start something with for awhile.

If you are not happy with the current situation and there is no hope of changing things, then I htink leaving would be a wise option.
Try to get soem guys together who share the same ideals as you and see where it goes.
I have a similar problem with my band, where I'm wanting to do more complex songs but the rest of hte band isn't there yet. So i've just learnt to bite my lip and not worry about it, as long as I'm playing a fitting part thats all I'm worried about. I save the harder stuff for home under the phones. I wish I had time for two bands, stupid work/school.

I had a similar problem too with a band I was in. The three other members all wanted to play punk and metal, but I am a classic rock fan and don't like metal or punk much. After playing for a while, I tried to get them to play a selection of classic rock songs as well so that we could play songs everyone likes (another band member was into classic rock as well as punk and metal). I suggested several classic rock songs, but they continually blew off my ideas and refused to play any kind of music that I wanted to play. After a while of that, I quit the band. I have nothing personal against the guys; we just did not work together really well in a band and I was having no fun.
