View Full Version : Top 100 Rock/Metal Vocalists: Round 1, Poll E
YDload
11-21-2005, 11:40 PM
Ok we're halfway through this round now, so if you don't know by now that there is more than one poll and you're worried that your favorite singer isn't on here, then YOU'RE AN IDIOT AND I HATE YOU.
Chris Cornell (Soundgarden/Audioslave):
Chris Cornell is undoubtedly one of the greatest rock vocalists of the 90s. Few rock frontmen can match the power and emotion that he puts into each and every verse, every line, every word. Even when the lyrics of his most famous band sometimes make little sense (when it's raining icepicks on my what?), it is Cornell who gives them meaning anyway. He had a great stint as the frontman of Soundgarden during the grunge explosion of the early 90s (even though the band had been around for ten years prior to the release of its legendary album Superunknown), and when that band parted ways, he hooked up with the former members of Rage Against the Machine to form Audioslave. The results have often been said to be disappointing, but if any enjoyment at all can come from this new band, it's from the slightly more coherent lyrics and awe-inspiring voice of Cornell.
"Alive in the superunknown, first he steals your mind and then he steals your...SOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLL." -Superunknown
"When the forest burns along the road
Like god's eyes in my headlights
And when the dogs are looking for their bones
And it's raining icepicks on your steel shore
I'm gonna break, I'm gonna break my-y-y-y
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run." -Rusty Cage
"And the wreck of you, is the death of you alllllll
And the wreck of you, is the break and the fallllll
While the rest of you harvest the souls." -Limo Wreck
"And you stare at me in your Jesus Christ pose
Arms held out like it's the coming of the Lord
And you swear to me you don't wanna be my slave
But you're staring at me like I, like I need to be- saved!" Jesus Christ Pose
James LaBrie (Dream Theater): (thanks Obi Wan Kenodi!)
Labrie is in many overshadowed by the massive talent his band displays, and constantly makes evident in their complex music. Fortunetly though, his signiture vocal takes have carved a place for him, although many people dislike him. Manly this is because of his acent, which many other people view as one of his finest atributes. However you feel about him, theres no denying that he has a rich voice, with excellent range and timber. He manages to pull off a nice heavy metal style, as well as a softer one on their more progressive songs. On their most recent people are saying his voice is better than ever, so we can still hope for great things from him in the future.
Outside the soundness of your mind/Bathing your soul in silver tears/Beneath a blackened summer sky/Praying for tme to disappeeeaaar -Under A Glass Moon
I was told if you dream of the next world/ You'll find yourself swimming in a lake of fire/ As a child, I thought I could live without pain without sorrow/ As a man I've found it's all caught up with me/ I'm asleep yet I'm so afraaaaaaaaaaaid -Metropolis Pt. 1
I'm sick of all You hypocrites / Holding me at bay/ And I don't need /Your sympathy/To get me through the day/Seasons change and so can I/ Hold on Boy/ No time to cry/ Untie these strings/ I'm climbing down/ I won't let them push me awaaaaaaaaaay -A Change of Seasons
Bon Scott (AC/DC):
Bon Scott was AC/DC's "classic" vocalist, who sang on all their big albums of the 70s. Sadly, he died of alcohol poisioning/asphyxiation/some rockstar thing in 1980, but luckily (or unfortunately) he was easily replaceable by Brian Johnson. Don't worry, once you hear enough classic rock radio, you WILL notice the difference between the singers, and you'll come to realize that Bon was probably the superior frontman. So he'll never be forgotten, and he would probably be proud that Angus and Malcolm have never strayed from playing the same thing for thirty years. That's just the way he was.
"Cause I'm T-N-T, I'm dynamite.
T-N-T, and I'll win the fight
T-N-T, I'm a power load
T-N-T, watch me explode!" -TNT (I apologize if these are actually Brian's vocals. maybe I don't know as much as I thought about these songs :()
Brandon Boyd (Incubus):
No bio for him? I'm shocked, as he's got a lot of fans. Maybe he doesn't need one, you know him well enough right? Ah hell, I'll just wait for one.
Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian): (thanks Riva)
Hansi Kursch is the vocalist for bands such as Blind Guardian and Demons and Wizards. His powerful voice, emotional tone and general badarsery have earnt him acclaim amongst lovers of heavy metal.
With a soaring falsetto that transcends his fellow power metal vocalists, Hansi is one of the more talented vocalists of the last two decades.
Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom): (thanks ShadowsFallen!)
For over a decade, Childern of Bodom have made quite an impact on the metal world. Lead by key song/lyrics writer and guitar viruoso Alexi Laiho, fans across the world have embraced the band for various aspects. While the main reasons are the sweeping melodies, fast, agressive attitude, Laiho's vocals are undeniably one of the band's most distinguishing traits. On past albums his voice resembled a high, black metal style shriek that made for some of the most agressive power metal ever made, and created a unique contrast with their neoclassical sound. In later years he began to utilize a traditional scream combined with harsher clean singing that greatly accented that music, which has become a much heavier style. He occasionally adds to the atmosphere of his music by using multiple layers of screams, yielding a strong emotional song like Downfall. Laiho is notorious for his careless heavy metal attitude, and his lyrics greatly reflect that. His writing is usually non-poetic, yet still conveys a powerful message about what he feels. Despite his lack of regard for lyrics, every once in a while Alexi will hit his stride and turn out a song that could put all lyricists to shame, such as the artfull Kissing the Shadows.
George Harrison (The Beatles/solo): (thanks CantBuyAThrill)
Definitely the least appreciated member of the Beatles (and not to mention the youngest, joining at age 14), George was arguably the most consistently creative of the Beatles. Though he did not submit the most material or sing the most songs, what he did contribute to the band were perhaps some of the most “tasty” songs in the Beatles’ catalogue. His experimentation with Indian music, (specifically with the Sitar on “Within You Without You” and “Norwegian Wood”) also added a different flavor to the Beatles’ already variant styles. Vocally, George obviously did not have the best range or greatest yelling voice in the band, yet his soft-spokeness and his emotional appeal were able to at times outdo his legendary bandmates Lennon and McCartney. Harrison’s solo career peaked as it began, with the release of “All Things Must Pass” (one of the classic albums in all of rock music,) which was a brilliant collection of songs written by Harrison, showing the creativeness that George was never really able to express as openly while still with the Beatles. This album features several great vocal tracks by George, especially on “Hear Me Lord”, “Let It Down”, “Beware of Darkness” and his Magnum Opus, “My Sweet Lord.” Classic Beatles songs on which Harrison sang include: “Here Comes the Sun”, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, “Savoy Truffle”, “Something”, “Long Long Long”, “Because”, “Eight Days A Week”, as well as many others.
“Forgive me Lord, please, those years when I ignored you,
Forgive them Lord those that feel they can't afford you” – Forgive Me Lord (All Things Must Pass)
“Give me hope
Help me cope, with this heavy load
Trying to, touch and reach you with, heart and soul” – “Give Me Love” (Living in the Material World)
“Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
'Cause I'm the taxman
Yeah, I'm the taxman” – “Taxman” (Revolver)
Zakk Wylde (Black label society)
Ihsahn (Emperor)
Geoff Tate (Queensryche)

George. Great singer. He may not have had the technical power and range that Lennon and McCartney had, or the confidence of those two, but his voice is just beautiful. It just fits his songs perfectly, conveys tons of emotions... beautiful voice.
Cornell will definitely get through easily.

I went with Ihsahn. Although I've not heard much of him, it's pretty much instantly recognizable that he blows away most black metal vocalists. :p
Det_Nosnip
11-21-2005, 11:57 PM
Ihsahn. Although Emperor's production often made it hard to tell, Ihsahn actually has a pretty great singing voice, and his screams are legendary. Plus, as an overall musician, the man is, quite simply, a genius.
No one up there I really feel too strongly about. I like Emperor, but I don't know if Ihsahn should get my vote. =\

cornell. he's a beast. i might try to whip a bio up for tate, but nothing concrete. stupid college papers.
anyway, cornell has a beast of a range, incredible power, control, and a great versatility. don't forget to mention his stint with temple of the dog (definitely his best vocal work) and his solo career (shows a softer side to his voice).

I said he was ONE OF the best ROCK singers of the 90s, not the greatest singer ever. The former is a fact, and the latter is just how I feel.

Where the hell is Zack De La Rocha? he was easily the best vocalist of the
90's every show he performed with RATM he always gave 110%. I've never seen such energy from a Singer he truely had a passion for what he believed in. Not just his live perfomaces but as a writer aswell some of the most Intelligent and meaningful lyrics I've ever read. example
A mass of hands press on the market window
Ghosts of progress
Feeding on hunger
And glaring through the promise
Upon the food that rots slowly in the aisle
A mass of nameless at the oasis
That hides the graves beneath the master's hill
Are buried for drinking
The river's water
While shackled to the line
At the empty wall
This is the new sound
Just like the old sound
Just like the noose wound
Over the new ground
Listen to the fascist sing
"take hope here
War is elsewhere
You were chosen
This is god's land
Soon we'll be free
Of blot and mixture
Seeds planted by our
Forefather's hand"
A mass of promise
Begin to rupture
Like the pockets
Of the new world kings
Like swollen stomachs
In applachia
It's the priests that **** you
As they whisper holy things
A mass of tears have transformed to stones now
Sharpened on suffering
And women into slings
Hope lies in the rubble of this rich fortress
Taking today what tomorrow never brings
This is the new sound
Just like the old sound
Just like the noose wound
Over the new ground
Ain't it funny how the factory doors close
Round the time that the school doors close
Round the time that the doors of the jail cells
Open up to greet you like the reaper
Ain't it funny how the factory doors close
Round the time that the school doors close
Round the time that the doors of the jail cells
Open up to greet you like the reaper
This is the new sound
Just like the old sound
Just like the noose wound
Over the new ground
Like ashes in the fall
The opinion of the song is taken from http://www.zdlr.net
It is my understanding that this song is about the future, after the collapse of modern society. I believe that Ashes In The Fall is a song that is about groups like political parties repackaging the same rhetoric over and over again saying that it has been drastically changed (ie. This is the new sound, just like the new sound). This explains the "Aint it funny how the factory doors close..." part. "Orwell's Hell" could refere to either the reference to the "peronal hell" that is descibed in the book "1984" or has it something to dowith Orwell's greatest fear; a totalitarian state And what not.
2)Dee-Dee Halili
Of course, the song is about the future, and unfortunately, some of Zack's predictions are coming true. Take, for
example, this lyric:
"In Appalachia / It's the priests that **** you / As they whisper holy things..."
Accusations of priestly sexual abuse arose around 2001, and increased even more as molestation victims started to speak up about their ordeals. The Roman Catholic Church is quite screwed, and the Vatican can only "reform" these priests, and before you know it, they're back in THE SAME PARISH! Perhaps the sexual repression that Catholicism puts on men of the collar contributes very much...and you wonder why it's so rampant in Catholic parishes! Why doesn't the Vatican allow priests to marry, like Protestant ministers? It saves a significant amount of sexual tension and repression. Like what Friedrich Nieztsche once said: "All suppressed truths become poisonous."

Uhh...am I the only one who doesn't know who Soundgarden are?
They sound as if they're grunge to me, so I don't care...
Grunge is a fake term. Soundgarden sounds like Black Sabbath + Led Zeppelin, but they got popular because their dreary sound attracted the same fans as Nirvana and AIC once the explosion of Seattle bands happened. If Soundgarden is grunge, then they are by far the best grunge band there is. Cobain was really the only one who couldn't sing: Stayley, Vedder, Cornell... they were all a lot better. But especially Cornell.

I understand that, fanboyism is a powerful force that drags thing like these polls down. I voted Alexi because I like his voice in many ways, not just because I like his band.
Well, that's okay. I personally think he couldn't sing his way out of a paper bag, and is especially foolish when compared to your average clean or harsh vocalist in a power metal band.

No real favorites in this poll. Cornell deserves it. I don't like LaBrie but he has technique. What a pansy voice for a metal band though... Scott's vocals are little more than irritating. Laiho doesn't sing, he just sort of vomits on the mike.
Let's sit and laugh at the first 0 vote candidate. Hell, I hope no one out of the usual ~380 votes for Wylde just for the sheer amusement of it. I'm confused as to who does the cleans and harsh vocals in Emperor so I can't judge the vocalist here. Tate sounds like any other 80s metal vocalist.
Winner: Cornell. However he's already taking the poll. My runner up goes to Brandon Boyd, who has a deep, strong voice with good range and can hit all the necessary notes with relative ease. He's not an amazing singer by any means, he's just the most "solid" to me. Easily enjoyable, very masculine and punchy and fairly versatile.

Nightfall in Middle Earth and A Night at the Opera are both great, though the latter has very dense production that takes time to get used to.
Imaginations from the Other Side follows that up quickly.
The thing is, range isn't the only thing to judge a singer by. Listen to Nightfall, A Past and Future Secret, Mirror Mirror, Into the Storm, Battlefield, and Time Stands Still (at The Iron Hill) to see that not only does Hansi have an impressive range, but also a lot of raw power and versatility. He has a very emotionally faceted voice that can cover a wide range of moods and feelings.

This poll is quite the hard one to choose from
Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian) - I chose him because he has a truly amazing and unique voice. When I first heard Blind Guardian I was blown away by pretty much everything by them, need it be instruments or vocals, it was all amazing.
Chris Cornell- I am a pretty big Soundgarden fan, I love pretty much everything by them and Chris is also another amazing vocalist. I just don't think he can match with Hansi on this one. Great unique voice though.
James LaBrie- Another band, that is slowly making their way up to be one of my favorites is Dream Theater. Their sound alone is just amazing, with the side project of Liquid Tension Experiment but vocalists here. I don't know whether to say the good or the bad. This is probably by far the most insane weird vocalist I have heard. He give Dream Theater an either happy or extrememly depressed feel, but he can change his voice quite a bit. My favorite way that he sings is on Octavarium pretty much during the last remaining minutes "Trapped inside this Octarvarium" line just sent chills down my spine.
Anyway, yeah, my vote-Hansi

You know people vote based on preference, not their perception of who is most technically skilled. Unfortunately, that might undermine the POINT of the poll, but it is inevitable. If you want a poll that accurate represents skill, you'd need a panel of qualified judges.
Like I said, I think Brandon's a perfectly solid if unspectacular singer. He holds the notes fine and his voice is fairly strong and deep, something I listen for in an appealing male singer. Labrie annoys the piss out of me, even though he ****s on several other vocalists in this poll. Blind Guardian, funny enough, is the only band I've never heard anything off of in this poll.

If you can only think of one song to vote for someone, especially an Audioslave song, then you're retarded. Chris Cornell has dozens of songs with mindblowing vocals, and that's just with Soundgarden.

Bon was with AC/DC who pretty much were all about sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll.

no, cornell sings for audioslave, but i cant think of a single song that he mumbles on.
and if you only know him from audioslave, you definitely need to look into his soundgarden and temple of the dog work.
