No. But if you put Official in the title, or if it breaks the rules then you have to ask for Mod approval. But I think Mods can edit the title to take out the official and the thread can stay open

Im listening to sunburn right now. Awsome band when you are in the mood for them. Although bellamy's voice gets anoying if you listen to them too much. Looiking forward to their new album..

bellamy has an amazing voice...his is probablly the only fasetto type that actually stays fasetto during a live concert...saw them at Michigan State in April and it was amazing...saw the Volta in May in Detroit and they were good but Cedric's voice was very mixed...probablly because the volta is such a high energy show...but still was dissapointed with that

Absolution is my favourite 2000's album.
Absolution is the only album i have by them, but it's great. for me, the stand-out track has to be "Hysteria", what with the awesome bass riff intro (which i've never bothered even trying to learn), and the awesome guitar riffs and vocals. out of interest, is Bellamy's voice as good live as in the studio?

Of course i love bellamys vocals, but i also like the bassist very much.

My favorite band.
I really like their subject matter as well as their melodies and talent. They have one about the dying thoughts of an Atheist that I found particularly moving.
Their Absolution CD was very good, though Hysteria did get monotonous after a while.

The Hysteria riff is pissy, really. Get the tab, it's a good party trick/showoff riff. And yes, Matt sings as well live as he does in the studio.

Anyways, I like Muse. I have Origin of Symmetry, Absolution and Showbiz. It's hard to pick a favourite- I usually have to be in the right mood to listen to them anyway. I'm not a fan of their really slow tracks (like Sing for Absolution) and sometimes the vocals can be a bit whiny, but apart from that, I love 'em. Would love to see them live sometime too.

Anyway... Let me give my 2c once and for all concerning Matt's voice. It is whiny but if you listen to the lyrical style it fits. His lyrics are often slightly demented; very possessive when it comes to chicks; vengeful; opressed; and a million other things which, combined, is only supported by his vocal style. And you cannot beat that man's falsetto. Micro Cuts... *shivers*

Chris Wolstenholme is the reason I started playing bass, I heard "New Born" before I knew music, and I was like "whats that instrument doing that thing!"
(Come on, not everyone was born knowing what a bass guitar is!)
Then I had to buy a bass, learn the song, get the album to learn it properly, get a distortion pedal to make it sound decent...
Its got to the point three years on where I play the intro to Hysteria with my bass behind my head.Crowd pleaser I can tell ya.
I love Bellamy's vocals, he's got a huge range, and while I don't enjoy them so much I do like the slower songs aswell.
Doms drumming is brilliant aswell, the man can do what needs to be done to make the song groove everytime I reckon.
Easily one of my favourite bands.

Chris is amazing in B&H with the bass tapping, it's incredible. Also Time Is Running Out, Plugin Baby and Hysteria have that great bass effect he's using.I think it's called a Big Daddy pedal or something like that.I read somewhere you can emulate the sound with the wah pedal in treble.

Clarification: the bass effect on TIRO is actually the bass signal split through three amps - one clean, one (his Fender Bassman 150) pushed to the point of overdrive, and one with a post-production bass synth effect on it. No synth pedal can track that fast. Anyway, the Plug In Baby effect is something else; maybe EHX BassBalls. Idk.
If you like Muse but have not heard the B-sides, check out The Groove. Google it, there's a Russian site offering all their B-sides for free download.

It took me ages to figure out what he was doing in Butterflys and Hurricanes. I saw him doing it live and was immediately like "I MUST DO THAT!"
Most of his distortion tones I can sort of emulate but not copy by playing with my distortion and bass settings. The pedal is a Big Muff, and I heard he has two of them. I love that guy's sound. Wah pedal doesnt do distortion tones, but it does sort of work for Plug In Baby. I think he uses an octaver aswell on that, he plays it up the neck but the pitch is wrong when I play it like that.
Hehe my singing teacher wants me to take in a track to learn next week, think I might go with New Born. Great song.
What are peoples favourite songs and why?
Showbiz would be mine, it's really dynamic and fantastically catchy and groovy.

Mine is probably Futurism, with the whole Franz Ferdinand intro. Or, idk, Sunburn, those are really interesting chords. It's amazing how Matt uses the borrowed Venetian influence from Chopin to ninja a jazz sound out of his music. I looove.

No, their albums are changing. Don't be one of those elitist hXc posers who think they're cool because "I liked the band before they sold out."

As far as my voice is concerned, voice training before age 18 is superficial; your voice isn't fully developed by then so you can do serious damage. And as for music theory - well, I try, but my school music teacher is t3h gh3y.

2 Absolution (A large step down from Origins Of Symmetry) ***/****
Absolution is more progressive than Origin of Symmetry, Origin is a more agressive and forward album. I didn't like how they had some fillers on Absolution, but you can't deny the great songs on there. Apocalypse Please is a amazing opener, and i couldn't find better way to close the album than Ruled By Secrecy.

Muse has finally updated their official site with news on the album.
'A Crying Shame' will NOT be the first single! Anyways, it transcribes as follows:
"We are now currently mixing the new album and hopefully should be finished over the next few weeks. We'll announce the release and touring plans soon. About the album, some new songs deal with awol soldiers, Zeta Reticulans, the sound of Joe Meek's tape machine being thrown down the stairs, the private thoughts of General Zhu Chenghu, feeling strangely comfortable collecting fire wood whilst wielding an axe and of course, how to store Pasta for 12 years using nitrogen flushing. We have also obtained a Buchla. Our very own Marvin sat in the corner depressed too complex to be fun and too unreliable to be a friend. It may have been close to getting blood from a stone but in the end we did get some earnest synth dreams out of him. The 6/8 cycling monster has turned out truly gargantuan, it will have to end the album (a few beserkers may recognize the chordal structure from piano doodlings on previous tours). Also, a sinister presence at the center of our Galaxy has inspired what could be described as a surprisingly casual manage-a-trois involving Prince, R2-D2 and the Queen when she was hot. Oh, by the way "Crying Shame" isn't going to be the first single! So that's it for now, see you all soon we hope".
Take care, Muse

Great band.
Matt Bellamy is on par with Jeff Buckley for one of the best live voices, IMO.
Matt Bellamy is amazing live...amazing singer and stage presence...Muse put on a highly entertaining show. His voice sounds exactly the same...if not better than it does in the studio with all the extra guitar solos and singing bits he does.

I really enjoy this band. I bought one of their cd's about a month ago and it just amazed me. This typically isn't my style of music, but it's great to hear, all the songs off the album were great to listen to. Each so different than the last, which makes it easier to listen to over and over.
I need to buy more of this bands cd's since I have only one, I just hope they are as good as the one I have.

It's a DVD of their performance at Glasotnbury 2004 without the tracks Citizen Erased and Stockholm Syndrome.
There are 6 bonus tracks, 2 from Wembley, 2 from the USA and 2 from the Earls Court shows.
Worth the money though, great DVD.
Also, Apocalypse Please is a brilliant song, it's so dark and haunting, the best off Absolution for me.

Yea they're a great band alright, but I have to say Bellamy isn't the absolute genius that everyone says he is.
Don't get me wrong i think he comes up with a lot of really good music and he's a fantastic singer, but a lot of his stuff is ripped off from Rachmaninov (not the vodka!). You know that Russian composer dude from about 1900. All that piano stuff that you hear in "Apocalypse please" or in the interlude in "butterflies and hurricanes" is very very similar to Rachmaninov's music.
I hate it when people go off on a rant about how much of a genius this guy is, the only reason people don't realise what he's doing is coz the music is about 100 years old
mutant!
03-08-2006, 06:47 AM
^ But it's not Rachmaninov. It's his own work. No-one has yet been able to integrate such obviously neo-classical work into a non-metal context with this kind of success before Muse. Sides, Sergei isn't his only Romantic-era influence. Tell me you can't hear the Chopin in Blackout's chords or the Bach in In Your World and I'll tell you you're deaf. Just because it's similar to Rachmaninov doesn't mean it's a ripoff. Hypnotize's intro sounds similar to Street Spirit but that doesn't say System is ripping off Radiohead. Just a thought.
squierdude
03-08-2006, 06:57 AM
^ Fair enough. I take your point. I guess I was wrong in saying he's ripping off Rachmaninov. I stand corrected.
It's just that I san see a lot of kids just listening with sheer ignorant glee thinking that this guy is the first person to come up with htis kind of music, coz in all fairness now, we're not exactly over-exposed to Rachmaninov's or Mozarts's or Bach's music in this day and age of VH2 and Scuzz and MTV2 etc.
I take your point though, I was wrong in saying what i was saying. Their music isn't a complete ripoff by any means.

If it's reasonably priced, I'd definitely go and see them. Particularly as you'll get to hear lots of new material which would make most Muse fans very jealous. :( As for Bellamy being a musical genius, that's a word that gets incredibly overused, given its connotations. I'd be hard pushed to say that there are more than 10 20th century popular musicians that can be put into that category, and even then that may well be overstating the case. He's a very skilled keyboardist though, particularly given the context in which he plays...for someone who is self-taught in particular he's a remarkable talent.
Muse is a great band and I will see them for sure. The good thing is that they will be playing on a festival. Not only do I get to see Muse, I also get to see Tool, Opeth, Green Carnation, Depeche Mode and many others (for a reasonably price ;))

Definitely - songs like Hyper Music aside (which has a distinctly Morello-tinged intro riff), Matt is a fan of random guitar-related noises. :p
@Med57: He's self-taught?! I find that very hard to believe. In fact I would tell you to your face that you're making it up. No way could anyone develop such a skilled touch on a piano, not to mention gain such a thorough understanding of harmony, teaching themselves.
Anyway, I think he's a musical genius but he has certainly not shown this in any of his existing compositions - merely hinted at it. I expect something big from him in 10 years' time.

 Those few acts alone make up a great set of acts at a festival. I want to get to Reading this year, which should have a very good lineup if the top few acts are anything to go buy...
Last year, Porcupine Tree stood in for The Mars Volta (who cancelled in the last minute) and held one of the best concerts I've been to. :) Very few attended the concert (apperently Snoop Dogg's concert was cooler) wich made it really "intimate" and special. I hope this year's festival holds some of the same pleasant surprises :)

On what does "H8" mean:
"Using a microcomputer (Hitachi H8 / 3048F) which can
be built into the industrialmachines, you can learn and understand the inputs /outputs of the microcomputer as a basis of robot control and conduct theexperiments by C-language for steppingmotor control, servomotor control (PWM control) and serial communication. H8 model, a 16-bit microcomputer consists of 32-bit registers, has a flash ROM of 128KB, a RAM of 4KB (SRAM) with external extension of 128KB and 78 I/O terminals with the built-in A/D and D/Aconverters. H8 is a microcomputer usually built into a TV, VTR, mobile-phone and car navigator. Since it has ample I/O terminals, H8 microcomputer is also used as a brain of a small robot."

Recent Interview with Chris of Muse from rockmag magazine...
Silent since their last interview in May 2005, the English Muse worked hard and are finishing the after Absolution, which could land near the 27th of May. From the mixing studio, Chris Wolstenholme speaks the first to give us a first taste of their 4th album.
RM : How long have you been in studio ?
CW : We entered in August in the Miraval Studio, in southern France, after a break to rest after the Tour. We had several songs we wanted to work with while writing other ones. We lived in the studio provided with a wonderful site. During a big month, we essentially rehearsed while recording from time to time, when ideas were getting concreted. In fact, the biggest part of this recording took place in New York until Christmas. It was greatly concentrated on the album, in the hotel to think about new ideas or in the studio to work with them. We hardly disconnected from the album. After the Christmas rest, we went to London to mix and we are still there doing it. If it goes on, we shall have spent almost as much time mixing as recording !!
RM : you take your time, we can see…
CW : Yes, we decided to do so for this album. We wanted to take our time to put down our ideas, try things and be sure until the end we could get a pleasant result, without hurrying. Showbiz and Origin of Symetry had been recorded rapidly and since Absolution, we prefer to have a cooler pace. We already have 20 finished songs, but nothing is definite. We are going to mix them before choosing what will appear or won’t appear in the album.
RM : you work with Rich Costley, who produced your last album.
CW : yes, we keep it because he really did a good job for Absolution. We had many producers until now, working on two following albums with the same one is a little bit different. Rich’s main quality is a very good technician doubled with a real musician. As a matter of fact, he gets involved more in what we are creating, and his advices about arrangements, as melodies, are constructive. He perfectly understands music which is not the same situation about other producers.
RM : Did you give a title to the album ? Rumours on Internet talked about Equilibrium…
CW : We don’t want to think about it now. We shall see later about it, about the presentation, the single, the clip and such things. First of all, we must decide a definitive tracklisting, et then finish the mixing. In fact, we are not sure at all about the album date release !
RM : What were you listening to while you were in studio ?
CW : To be frank, we were exclusively concentrated about our own music. When we listened to stuff, it was rather music from the 50’s and 60’s, in the style of Joe Meek’s produces (the first English independent producer, he particularly founded the Tornados, the band where Matt’s father, Georges played). Kill Bill’s music also marked us as well as Nancy Sinatra’s influences on one or two songs of the album.
RM : During the treasure hunt you organized during this even Tour, you showed that you love codes, anagrams, enigmas and hidden secrets. Will there be those kinds of things in the album or in the presentation ?
CW : This treasure hunt was a big frenzy, a game. It was great to see so many people were taking part into it. Will we do it in the album ? Probably no. But we never know, it could be funny after all.
RM : The last communication noticed in your site from the 23rd of February nevertheless gives a feeling of secret where we hardly understand what is written… Since last week, many fans in forum try to decipher.
CW (while laughing) : Seriously ? No, there is no message at all. Defining an album, above all in which we have been drowned into it since months, this is not so simple. So, we decided to put anything in the message, private jokes as well as completely invented things, we don’t even know what we meant while writing them !
RM : Did you try new stuffs during those sessions ?
CW : We put trumpet in two songs… and we also used much Buchla synthesizers (created in 1963, the Buchla was the first one especially done for a musician, without the help of a professional electronics engineer).
RM : How would you define the new album ?
CW : It is once more difficult to answer, all the more than we don’t know which songs will be in it. We can’t say it is a rock album, nor a piano album… What is sure, it is less oriented in classics than Absolution and it is mainly more positive. Anyway, it ought to be difficult to do a more negative one than Absolution ! (laughs).
RM : when do you intend to set off on Tour ?
CW : As soon as the album release. During the last Tour, we have much stayed in USA. We haven’t participated in gigs in Europe for a long time, and we miss them a lot. This summer, if everything is alright, we shall play in several festivals.
RM : Before we leave, do you have something to tell to our RockMag readers ?
CW : Yes, We long to meet you all on the road !

From MTV.com
Muse Hope Fans Aren't Too Shocked By 'Genre-Morphing' New LP
Many bands will tell you that, long before they head into the studio to start recording a new album, they'll test the waters a bit. Maybe they'll experiment with exotic instrumentation, tinker with different musical styles and challenge the overall direction of the sound they've already established - ideally without alienating their fanbase.
Over the years, Muse fans have come to expect the band to push the proverbial envelope. And the thunderous British rock trio have abided, consistently expanding their sonic reach and releasing LPs that pull from diverse influences including Radiohead, Black Sabbath and Queen.
But even Muse's most adventurous fans might be surprised by the group's forthcoming LP, which was recorded in New York last October with Rich Costey (Franz Ferdinand, Cave In).
"The diversity of the album and some of the directions we've discovered and gone for might shock [our fans] in some way," drummer Dominic Howard explained. "Hopefully, it will be a nice shock — ultimately all of them sound like Muse. We reached a point where we were looking at all these songs and how different they sounded, and we were wondering how this was ever going to sound like a band, like one album. But somehow it really does."
Muse — who are currently mixing the yet-untitled follow-up to 2003's Absolution — spent a number of months writing "in this old chateau that's hours away from civilization" in the south of France, Howard said. The band brought 16 tracks to New York, and the dramatic change of scenery helped shape the end product — which will probably feature 11 cuts when it hits stores in July.
"When we moved into this crazy, claustrophobic, fast-paced way of living, we absorbed some of that energy and that affected the recording," Howard said of the move to New York. "If we had stayed in the south of France, we would have taken five years to finish the record. [There,] we spent a lot of time just discovering what we were going to do, sitting around and chatting about where we wanted to take the band and which direction certain songs should follow."
The material, Howard said, is a "very drastic" mix of musical styles: Some tracks border on "mellow jazz," while others are at the opposite end of the spectrum, sounding like "Prince-influenced, groove-based rock weirdness." The work of influential Italian film composer Ennio Morricone ("The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," "The Untouchables") inspired the space-prog tune "The Knights of Cydonia." And on "Take a Bow," which calls on world leaders to take responsibility for their actions, Muse move through three musical stages: starting off as a classical piece before moving into a techno mid-section and an "apocalyptic rock" ending.
Howard said the band is currently putting the finishing touches on the disc and deliberating which song to release as the first single. Muse will debut some of the new material this summer during a number of European festival appearances, and the group plans to tour the U.S. this fall.

Prince of Darkness
03-31-2006, 04:36 PM
1. Take A Bow – synth intro, then techno/heavy
2. Starlight – potential single; straightforward song; “women are nice”
Supermassive Black Hole – Prince-y vocals, Millionaire-influenced, funk/disco
A Soldier’s Poem – mellow/jazzy, epic/heavy Abso-era leftover that's been stripped down, layers of vocals, sounds “big”,
Invincible – “builder”, optimistic
City of Delusion – folksy, eastern, mixed by Italian genius, has strings
10. [untitled] - orchestral
11. [Bandit Song] – Tex-mex, ends with riffs/backing vocals
That's from that Muse Message board place.
Cool?

ALBUM HAS BEEN LEAKED!
Yep - it's finally happened! I'm sure you've all heard the latest interview with Muse with Toazted. The album IS out there.
As with Coldplay (X&Y), Muse have released promotional copies of their album under a pseudonym (i.e. if you search for Muse you wont be in luck!). The leaked copy containts 14 songs (as with Absolution) but this is obviously subject to change.
Obviously, for legal reasons, we can't tell you the pseudonym Muse chose for their promo, but we CAN tell you that it exists on several torrent websites.

Truth. It's amazing how generic-sounding a fuzz pedal can make your tone. People go oooonnnn and oooonnnn about Jimi H's tone but if you have a Fuzz Face, you can get 99% of his sound with almost any guitar/amp combination.
Anyway, tr00 Wolstenholme tone is only achievable with a line splitter running a fuzz into one amp and a synth into another. And a clean into a third. \m/

from http://invictus.softmeg.com/ MUSE - Rock For Clever People
The world according to Matt Bellamy
My parents split up when i was 13:
The thing that shocked me the most about it was that I didnt feel anything. I couldn't feel gutted. I tried, but I couldn't. I found it a little disturbing about myself. Maybe playing music was my way of dealing with it.
Am I a millionnaire?
No, not quite. But thats what people often think. Most of the money we make we save to pay for more touring. And the website which costs us a ****ing fortune every month. Plus we've got a London office, with a couple of people working for us. Thats where our money goes.
Muse is my legacy:
Being an atheist means you have to realise that when you die, that really is it. You've got to make the most of what youve got here and spread as much influence as you can. I believe that you only live through the influence that you spread, whether that means having a kid or making music.
I've had problems with stalkers:
I had to change my mobile number and e-mail address because I was getting serious amounts of stuff, people writing to me saying they were going to kill themselves if I didnt **** them. I cant think of anything more unattractive than wanting to have sex with you because of who you are onstage.
I dont touch cocaine or heroin:
Ive seen what those drugs do to people. I moved in with a drug dealer when I was 18. Our flat looked like a scene from Trainspotting, white powders and mirrors and tin foil everywhere. The effect those days had on me is that I dont do those kinds of drugs.
Theres whole sections of my life that I cant remember:
Everything that was my life until I was about 20 is gone. Ive forgotten who I was before then. So Im trying to have things im going to remember in my life other than touring and making albums.
The point of taking magic mushrooms is to dig into your subconcious:
To experience something thats not always on offer. Im not afraid of seeing something horrible. Its a way of connecting with yourself in a way that you cant normally do.
Im always disappointed with English rock music:
Im still looking for something new, something really special from this country. At the moment im kinda lost in the world of mp3s, downloading all sorts of ****. I wonder if bands will even bother releasing albums in 10 years time.
People either love or hate muse:
I guess it just means we're different. Offending people is better than no reaction at all. I do think we exercise musical freedom more than any other band at the moment. Theres a lack of shame in what we do which is probably what offends people.
Reywas

I'm watching the video to "Spiders" now, by Lovedrug. I don't quite see the simularities between them and Muse at all. Lovedrug sound like fairly generic pop-rock, Muse are way out of their league.
