Mapex M Birch: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=perc/search/detail/base_pid/449140/

Sonor 3003: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=perc/search/detail/base_pid/449668/

The Mapex M Birch is $170 more, comes with an extra 10"x9" tom, but the Sonor is cheaper and is maple. What do you guys think of these drumsets?

Mapex M Birch is sexy

Are you sure the 3003 is maple? I thought that all-maple shells in the force range started with the 3005 - I'm pretty certain the 3003 is a laminate of maple and basswood. The Sonor catalogue I have at home doesn't say how much of each wood is used though; it could be 6plys of basswood, and just 1 of maple for all they say!

I will check later when I get home :thumb:

I own a Mapex Pro-M kit, so I may be biased towards Mapex....

Yeah, actually in the description, it does say basswood with maple. At that price, I bet it's mostly basswood being used. I love the finishes on the Mapex M Birch, but I can't decide which I like the most. Which one would you guys pick, here's all the colors... http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=perc/product/images/page=1/base_pid=449140 .

I like purple too. Or sparkly white, or good old black. The browser doesn't work for me so I can't see the choices...

Try copying and pasting it, that might work.

I'm still at work - just about to leave for home. I'll have a look in the catalogue when I get back. Yes, I have the Mapex one too.....I'm a sad collector of catalogues and stuff!

Right, I've got my brochure out, and for me it's a close one between Transparent Black, and Transparent Purple.

My Pro-M is T. Black, and it's the sex!

There is no Transparent Black in the Mapex M Birch as far as I can see.

Yes there is mate - I've got the 2005 catalogue in front of me as I type this. The only thing I can think is that it's not available in the US or something

I have an M Birch in Transparent Sapphire and it is absolutely amazing. I love it. I just bought the Joey Jordison sig snare drum too so I think my kit is complete for awhile. But anyway the M Birch is great. Ive never tried the Sonor so I may be a little biased.

sp1406, anyway you can get a picture up of your set? I would love to see that finish, since that's probably my favorite. Thanks.

Do you want a birch kit or a maple?

The Leper Messiah

I'm basically decided at this point that I am getting the Mapex M Birch, I just need to decide what finish I want. I like a few alot.

I'd say get the "Transparent Emerald" for the kit :thumb: I love the way the green looks on that finish  I think you can get "Transparent Cherry" on the M Birch kits too, and...that's right, you guessed it...

That Mapex is such a sexy kit. mmm. I would go with either the Trans. Cherry or the Honey Amber.

This is one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make. Haha... I have a few weeks to decide so it's all good, more pictures please! Thanks.

Also, I have seen the least pictures of the Emerald Green finish. If anyone has some good pictures of this finish, would be awesome.

Go to mapex.com and they'll have a finish viewer where you can see the finishes. Although it's not the real thing, it'll help to give you a better idea of what they look like :thumb:

I can post a pic of my Pro-M in Transparent Black later if you'd like (and if no-one else does in the meantime)
The outer ply of the M-Birch is also maple so it'd look the same

That would be cool man, but sadly the Mapex M Birch doesn't come in Transparent Black. I would still like to see a picture of your set though.

To Lepermessiah - I can't understand why you say it's not available in T. Black - it's in my brochure!

Anyhow, here's a close up pic (my digi camera is quite old, so forgive the quality)

Go with the M Birch in Amber. You wont be disappointed. Nevermind the tom angles.
