Iloved Whoracle - Especially Jotun and the Hive.
After that, Probably Clayman - AWESOME album and Jester Race.
But I'd say Whoracle's my favorite album. Don't like their newer releases much.... Not as Epic.

they're awesome, i have reroute to remain and soundtrack to your escape and they're both pretty good.
my favorites are:
Reroute To Remain
Touch Of Red
Drifter
Egonomic
Like You Better Dead
They're one of my favorite metal bands. I like all their material, though my favorite era is Colony/Clayman. My favorite songs are Trigger and The Jester Race.
I'd really like to see them live.

I haven't heard to much of In Flames, maybe ten songs or so, but each of those songs I really enjoyed.
I am not the biggest fan of screaming/deep vocals, but I really enjoy everything by In Flames that I have heard. I just need to buy a cd or two of theirs to see if I will enjoy everything or not.
The only actual 'death metal' band I listen to. Or they used to be death metal. The old stuff is incredible though...favorite songs...Moonshield, Jester's Dance, Artifacts of the Black Rain, Colony, Embody the Invisible, Only for the Weak, Clayman...and then they just went to crap.

I've realized that there is no bad In Flames music at all. Those who may think the new stuff sucks have to high a standard for In Flames. Those who love the new stuff and have only heard the new stuff will realize how great a band In Flames truly is once they hear their older stuff.
In Flames entire catalog > anybody else's entire catalog.

No. The insane lead guitars and sweet tones on Jester Race and up to Colony/Clayman are miles above the horrible production, crappy tones, uninspired repetetive one-note riffs, half-assed growls and iffy lyrics on RTR and STYE. There IS some good stuff on those two albums but they hardly even sound like they're by the same band that created "Dialogue With the Stars" and "Artifacts of the Black Rain."
In Flames entire catalog > anybody else's entire catalog.

I like them quite some because they were the first "metal" band I actually liked.
*crowd saying "awwwww"*
Anyhow, I think I have all their albums in my comp, except the last two, which a friend didn't exactly like so he didn't burn them to a CD and gave them to me. :-/
My favouritest songs, in no particular order:
Lord Hypnos
Swim
Jester's Race
Sattelites and... uh... that thing, I forgot. :(
Wayfayrer
Acoustic medley
Pallar Anders Visa
I think there are more, but those are the ones I can think of right now. :-/

I saw them at ozzfest, it was almost all new stuff, and they did it poorly, not a good show. Their old stuff however is ace.
I like all of In Flames' albums. They have a good variety to suit different moods. I think their best work really is TJR through Clayman, but R2R and moreso STYE are great albums in a different right, and Come Clarity has some brilliant songs on there.
I like the keyboard use in the later albums, and some of Anders' melodies are very gripping. The guitar work is often sub-par, but it's still good music.

Damn... does Anders still over do the clean vocals? and the keyboards?
I'm listening to CC now. I really liked the title track's acoustic intro and even the lame electric guitar parts aren't so bad (at least the production sounds better than STYE) but the stupid clean-but-still-vaguely-growly vocals are still there and it's irritating the hell out of me. Anders actually does some good clean singing once in a while (Metaphor), why won't he use that plus his all-out growl instead of this half-assed inbetween thing? Argh!
Oh well. So far this album is a hell of a lot better than RR and STYE. Not old IF, but better.
Oh and BTW, I only like In Flames from Jester Race on. The stuff before that is not to my liking--too much death metal and not enough melodic.
Damn... does Anders still over do the clean vocals? and the keyboards?
You'll have to decide for yourself if it's over-done (I don't necessarily think so--then again, I like STYE), but to me it's in the vein of the newer In Flames sound.
Oh and BTW, I only like In Flames from Jester Race on. The stuff before that is not to my liking--too much death metal and not enough melodic.
I know...Pre-Jester Race In Flames is horrid and unlistenable in my opinion. But TJR is an amazing album, the title track probably being my favorite IF song. But Colony is probably their best album for me.

I'm listening now, this is an improvment, but Anders isn't doing what he could be doing... that awesome scream he had going on Colony... damn.. like Jude said, hes doing that kinda growl kinda not scream and its not that great... I like the instruments more though, the guitar on the title track was pretty nice.
Vocals remind me of nu-metal... :upset:
On that song, I agree the vocals are kind of Nu-Metal-ly. But overall, I like the album. It's got some damn great songs. The title track is one of the better In Flames I've heard. Versus Terminus, Dead End, Reflect the Storm. It's still a good album. I don't know if I like it better than STYE though.

I'm going to listen to those tracks you recommend now... I was on number 2 (after listening to a select few others as well) and was getting a bit bored.. But I'm trying.
Track 2 is not so good in my opinion. The album remains consistent with bad/good parts throughout, so you'll have to fight through the pain to get to the good stuff. :p

Okay, so for those of you who have heard it:
Does the new album seem to go back to a style similar to Clayman? From what I've read above, it seems like Come Clarity follows a similar formula to RTR and STYE. I was eally hoping that they would get back to using harmonized guitar sounds and maybe Whoracle-Colony era vocals. Does the new disc seem to do what Anders talked about in his interviews?
Darkness

Anders sounds like Jonathan Davis in many parts, which I can't stand (no offense to Korn fans). Some songs are good, but others are really whiny, annoying tracks that make me wonder what the hell they were thinking.

11-22-2005, 06:31 PM
so those of you who already have it...
I think it's not too bad, to be honest. I mean, there are some...I don't know, nu-metallish moments, for lack of a better word, but overall it's pretty decent. The guitar work is more complex than Soundtrack or Reroute I reckon, and I like that.
Is it just me, or does "Scream" and "Versus Terminus" almost sound like Linkin Park songs? Although I actually like Versus Terminus.
I think the vocals are better than Reroute and Soundtrack, but that's just me I guess.
Shadows
11-22-2005, 06:33 PM
My opinion is as follows:
RTR > CC > STYE
RTR was very experimental and interesting. STYE took thos elements and simplified all of them until it was almost nu metallish. CC seems somewhere in between.

I looove In Flames, favorite songs include Embody the Invisible, The New World, Trigger, Man Made God, Superhero of the Computer Rage, The Jester Race, Clayman....ahh too many to mention.
I'm glad they don't necessarily use the same sound techniques as they used to. How boring it would be if they continued to release Whoracle, The Jester Race, and Colony over and over again. Granted, Colony is my favorite IF album, but I also enjoy the new stuff, just on a different level. I don't overanalyze the music...it sounds good to me, whether it's Nu Metal or not. Some of the guitar riffs are pretty lousy, though. The one-note jerky rhythmic riffs with blast beats sections get old after a while, but they level it out with some great sounding melodies. Other than that, I can put Come Clarity on and listen through it with enjoyment, so that's all I need.
I still really like Soundtrack to Your Escape, though. For me, it goes Colony > STYE > The Jester Race = Clayman > Whoracle > Come Clarity > R2R

To much death and not enough melodic?
Funny, there isn't much death metal in those albums any way, every thing is extremely melodic and quite laid back compared to death metal.
Lunar Strain/Subterranean, The Jester Race and Whoracle are my favorites from In Flames for overall quality of the album. And December Flower has an incredible solo, which is one of their best songs imo.
And Come Clarity is better then STYE, that is for sure. I like how they put more leads into the songs on CC, adds a nice touch.

Well, apparently In Flames are no longer heavy metal? I always thought they band had promise but could never really call them a favourite because they straddle the line between dissonance and melody too much for my liking. The melodic scales they play just clash with the screaming the guy did to my ears. If I want br00tal death metal I'll listen to Nile. Bands like Opeth blended the cleans with heaviness infinitely better and hence... no In Flames albums for me, other than a few isolated songs (Metaphor, Jester Script Transfigured, December Flower are amongst my preferred songs of theirs).

In Flames is still Metal, anybody who says otherwise is extremely dense.
My favorites would probably be Subterranean and Come Clarity... Whoracle and Colony are close, but I dunno, Subterranean has the uber-melodic riffing, and then Come Clarity has a nice balance of old and new style stuff... some of the solos are just amazing.
BTW: Anders Fridén's clean singing is much better on the new album, but his clean singing was at it's peak on Skydancer by Dark Tranquillity.
Black Ash Inheritance is one of hell of a release as well. I love Goilaths Disarm Their Davids, Gyroscope and Acoustic Medley. The live version of Behind Space is god awful, though, in my opinion.

I normally just list BAI with Jester Race, since I got them together at Border's... but yeah, all of those songs pwn.
The live version of Behind Space isn't that bad IMO.
Kage: I'm not saying they should release the same sounding album over and over, even if it's a good one, but they could have kept the good characteristics of TJR and explored different styles...just as Opeth may explore different musical territory but they keep the basic elements of what make them Opeth: Heavy/acoustic long songs, insane heavy complex riffing, beautiful classical parts, etc. etc. The thing with the new IF stuff is that the things that made them good before are lacking.
And you like STYE more than Jester Race and Clayman?
Funny, there isn't much death metal in those albums any way, every thing is extremely melodic and quite laid back compared to death metal. Keep in mind that the only things I like that even resemble death metal are In Flames, Opeth, and, recently, Eternal Tears of Sorrow. The old IF is just too death metally for me. Also it just seems kind of all over the place...and their brilliant riff and melody writing as evidenced on TJR is rarely evident in the old stuff.
Lunar Strain/Subterranean, The Jester Race and Whoracle are my favorites from In Flames for overall quality of the album. And December Flower has an incredible solo, which is one of their best songs imo.
I really hate most of December Flower, but that solo is one of the best I've heard in any genre. I always put that song on, forward to the solo, and listen to just the solo over and over and over.
TJR has some great growling, but yeah, I'd say the Colony/Clayman growls are the best. I just wonder what the hell happened to him after they recorded Clayman :upset:
i am the robots
11-22-2005, 10:22 PM
Well from Colony forward his voice has been steadily become higher pitched... his screaming has improved dramatically, though I really miss the growl.
I normally just list BAI with Jester Race, since I got them together at Border's... but yeah, all of those songs pwn.
I, too, consider those two to be together, but every once in a while when I'm listening to BAI, I have to step back and say, "damn, this release can hold its own."

Right, but, honestly, I think Opeth are miles ahead of In Flames in terms of songwriting talent. I mean, Opeth can keep their roots and keep consistent the elements that make them Opeth, while still branching out and exploring new ground. I don't know if In Flames could do that, honestly. I think if they kept doing those things, it'd just become rehashing. Not all bands are as talented as Opeth, Porcupine Tree, etc., so they have to find new ways of doing things to keep from repeating themselves.
I think Jester Race has some pretty mediocre songs, and same with Clayman. On Colony and STYE, I like every song. Some of the songs off of TJR are downright amazing, and it contains my favorite IF song ever, but I still like Colony and STYE with more consistency. =\

I think most IF albums tend to kind of go downhill in the second half. Jester Race doesn't, though, whereas Colony is mediocre after Pallar Anders Visa, Clayman is mediocre after track 7, etc. Jester Race stays strong with TJR, December Flower and Wayfaerer.
Edit: Let's talk about lyrics. Specifically let us analyze the lyrics of TJR. Specifically December Flower. What the hell is this song (and the rest of the album) supposed to be about?

On Come Clarity there is really no parts that keep me hooked, it seems like they threw out all the good elements of the new stuff and tried to bring good elements of the old stuff.
The album seems unfocused and kinda thrown together, gonna have to wait a couple years and hope they get back on track with the next one.

I am bumping this thread in hopes of it becoming the "official" IF thread and thus eliminating the multiple IF threads that are being made recently.
On a side note, has anyone heard anything by Eternal Tears of Sorrow? I got one of their albums off one of the R&M mailing lists and I like it. It reminds me a bit of In Flames, but with more 'melodic' and less 'death metal.' I quite like the songs 'Nightwind's Lullaby' and 'Blood of Faith Stains my Hands'.

Anyone else disappointed by the choice of bands In Flames is bringing on tour with them next year. Trivium is a great choice but Devil Driver and Zao? There are countless other bands that would be a better addition than those to bands.Theyve toured with some great bands on their previous American tours like Killswitch Engage, As I Lay dying, Soilwork, Chimaira, and Unearth.
I HAVE BUMPED THIS THREAD FOR THE PURPOSE OF BECOMING THE ONLY IN FLAMES THREAD IN THE FORUM. IN RECENT DAYS THERE HAVE BEEN FAR TOO MANY IF THREADS WHICH ARE TOTALLY UN-NEEDED. PLEASE RESTRICT DISCUSSION OF IF TO THIS THREAD AND NOT ANY OF THE NEW ONES, AND FURTHERMORE, DO NOT MAKE ANY NEW THREADS ABOUT THEM.

I whore all their albums and releases, because they are ALL of high musical quality.
I whore all their albums and releases, because they are ALL of high musical quality.
I would argue that RTR and STYE are of far lesser musical quality than Jester Race, Colony, and Clayman (I haven't heard Whoracle yet...anyone want to hook me up?)
The guitar parts alone are symbolic of how those albums went downhill. The new guitar parts are rather uncreative and samey. Compare the best guitar playing on RTR and STYE with the solo on December Flower, or the leads on Artifacts of the Black Rain or Embody the Invisible.
Not to mention the songwriting declined, and the use of one-note chugging riff breakdown type things went way out of control, not that those things were ever good to begin with.
CC is growing on me a lot though. At first a lot of what I didn't like of it was the same kind of stuff that I didn't like about some of the older songs, too.

Using the december flower solo as an example isn't too good considering it was written and played by someone not in the band (it is an amazing solo though)
Listening to Come Clarity right now, the intro to dead end (the song I've gotten to so far.. hehe) is everything I love about In Flames.. But then the female vocals kick in.. And the singing, and the riff underneath it is really meh.. and it just feel way too nu-metally.. .. . But it's definately a big leap forward for the band imo..
Edit:
oh shi, the title track is amazing!.. Both the singing and the riffs!

Im on the last song of Come Clarity, this album is DEFINITELY a step up for In Flames and like many others have stated, they have redeemed themselves in my eyes. Definitely a buy-worthy cd when it comes out, although the first half of the disc isnt as good as the second, but its still all good material.
I also noticed this is one of the few times that a band has actually done what they said they would do in an album (unlike Opeth, but lets not go there). Whether you like it or dont, you cant deny that In Flames has indeed mixed some of their older style with the new and it worked out great in my opinion.

BTW: Anders Fridén's clean singing is much better on the new album, but his clean singing was at it's peak on Skydancer by Dark Tranquillity.
Ah, but that was Mikael Stanne doing the cleans on that album! He was originally a guitar player and the backup and clean vocalist in the band, until he took over lead vocals. You can hear some of his growls on that album too, they're pretty easy to distinguish from Anders'.

Ahh, I stand corrected. I knew Mikael did some of the guitarwork, but I didn't know about the vocals, except on Shadow Duet.
Is it so hard to just have one IF thread on the first page? Why doesn't everyone take this discussion over to Ramsey's thread...or vice versa...PLEASE.
So i've just heard Come Clarity for the second time and well In Flames has made quite a nice turn-around with their newest release, It really seems like In Flames reverted to a lot of the old style riffing and melodies, a la Clayman and there isnt as much of his Reroute-ish singing and more screaming which is always a good thing....does anyone know who is the female singer in the song "Dead End"?

Gyroscope is an awesome song from Whoracle. Also, the title track is really cool and unusual.
Anyone else going to see In Flames on their upcoming tour? I'm buying tickets now for their Houston show on February 7th. Can't wait. They're playing at amazing venue, too. Should be an excellent show, aside from the fact that I hate the opening acts (Trivium, Devildriver, Zao). =\ In Flames'll be worth it.

If you're not really into heavy stuff, go with either reroute to remain or clayman.

Where are all the Whoracle fans?

If you thought Elvenking was folky you should check out Korpiklaani. Jay's doing a write-up on them later. They're like 80% folk, 20% metal.
Anyways, In Flames are great. I love Whoracle and Clayman.

I think we should decide on a name aswell. Like um.......can't think of right now but i'm sure other people can!
I just got Clayman through the post and I'm waiting on The Jester Race.
3 hours to In Flames + Sepultura. :smoke:

^Was it good? Set lists for both bands?
That was Awesome...
Fukk knows the setlists, I could name a few songs but not whole set. Both bands were amazing.
It was actually 3 bands, uhm, some French one, can't remember the name. They were okay.
The Sepultura drums are even better live. It wasnt Igor because he's not doing the tour it was some other guy, but he was more than capable. He wore a kilt and near then end stood up on his stool and lifted it up...=/ lol.
In Flames were excellent. They played 30 seconds of "Vacuum" before having to stop because someone got injured. Then moved onto the next song. I'm not gonna post a setlist, but if you really wanna know some songs I'll try and remember. Gigs are always a blur to me afterwards.
Got myself a nice Sepultura T-shirt and In Flames longsleeve. :smoke:

I saw Anders in HMV in Birmingham yesterday, a few hours before their gig, just walking around browsing DVD's, was very unexpected indeed. Shook his hand, said hello, then his phone rang, and he had to go.

I haven't seen a thread on In Flames, so if there is, then just close this.
So, I just recently got into In Flames and picked up their new CD Come Clarity. Great CD IMO.
